Abstract
A security panel 12 is pivotally mounted adjacent to an aperture closure member, such as a door 10, and releasably secured by a locking bar 16 to the door. When the door 10 is opened contact is made with the locking bar 16 and panel 12 so that further movement is prevented. Conversation or transaction may take place whilst physical protection is provided by the panel 12 and forced entry is deterred. Normal use of the door 10 is obtained by releasing the locking bar 16 and pivoting the panel 12 to a dormant position. Egress and access through the panel is achieved via the gate 20. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Security devices
This invention relates to security devices for structural apertures which are provided with closure members hinged at one side to the structure adjacent to an edge of an aperture.
Structural apertures as aforesaid are hereinafter referred to as "structural apertures of the kind described". A prime example of a structural aperture of this kind is a door aperture for a building; but a window aperture closed by a hinged window also comes within the category.
According to the present invention, a security device for structural apertures of the kind described comprises a security panel (as hereinafter defined); hinge means connecting the panel at one edge to the structure at a position adjacent to the side of the aperture opposite to the side adjacent to which the aperture closure member is hinged to the structure; and a stop arrangement which, when the panel is swung about its hinge axis to a certain position, limits angular displacement permitted of the closure member, about its hinge axis, from the aperture closed position to a position at which entry into the structure by way of aperture is barred, on the one hand, by the presence of the closure member and, on the other, by the presence of the panel.
The expression "security panel" hereinbefore employed embraces any essentially two dimensional form of substantial area having itself an opening, whether or not provided with a closure member, through which it is possible for a person within the structure to view a visitor before his admission into the structure. A frame containing a grille, of, for example, wrought-iron, may be a security panel within the definition. Or the panel may be a full door but with an aperture let in at around face height; the small aperture may be provided with a slidable or a hinged closure member.
There may, for the purpose of permitting objects to be passed between a visitor and an occupant of the structure, be a space between the panel and the floor or ground.
The stop arrangement may comprise: abutment means outstanding from the security panel, the disposition of the said abutment means being such that, with the security panel swung to the said certain position when the closure member is opened, contact between the edge of the closure member, opposite to the closure member hinge axis, and the abutment means prevents further opening of the closure means; and means serving to prevent movement of the security panel away from the said certain position.
The means preventing movement of the security panel as aforesaid may comprise a stay arrangement connected to the security panel. The stay arrangement may comprise one or more stays pivotally connected to the panel and to the structure, or to the panel and to the structural aperture closure member. The stay arrangement might, however, comprise a releasible detent arrangement secured to the floor or ground and operative to engage the panel when swung at the said certain position. Yet again the stay arrangement may comprise a vertical double bolt attached to the panel and displaceable to enter into fixed receptacles one in the floor and the other in an overhead member.The security panel may embody a lockable door through which, with the panel engaged with the closure member, entry to or exit from the structure may be made without the necessity for disabling the security arrangement i.e. swinging the panel away from engagement with the closure member.
Three embodiments in accordance with the invention are hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows pictorially and in plan a first arrangement of a closure member, a door, and a security panel;
Figure 2 is a plan view depicting the arrangement of Fig. 1 but with the panel swung to and secured in a door engaging position;
Figure 3 shows the same arrangement but with the door engaged with the panel;
Figure 4 illustrates in plan a second variant embodying the invention; and
Figures 5 to 8 depict in plan a third, and preferred, arrangement for the security device and its operation.
The drawings are largely self-explanatory.
In the arrangement of Figs. 1 to 3 the security panel 1 2 has abutment members 1 7 and a stay arrangement comprising one or more rigid bars 1 6 connected at one end to the panel and at the other to the wall. With the bar or bars 1 6 so secured the panel is at a certain angular displacement such that when the door 10 is opened, engagement of the edge of the door with the abutments 1 7 prevents further opening of the door. Accordingly entry into the room is barred by the door and panel as shown in Fig. 3. Visitors may nevertheless be seen and identified through one or more openings 1 5 in the panel.The upper opening 1 5 may contain a grille, the lower may be used to pass objects between the visitors and an occupant of the room.
In Fig. 4 the stay arrangement is shown to comprise a releasible vertical bolt the ends of the displaceable bolt members of which, when extended, enter female parts in the floor and in a canopy 1 8 over the door. A second releasible stay extends obliquely between the panel and the wall.
In Figs. 5 to 8 abutments on the door 10 are dispensed with and the stay or stays 1 6 releasibly pivotally connected to the door 10 and secured to the panel. The stay or stays define the operative position for the panel 1 2 and serve as stop means serving to arrest and to limit opening of the door.
The panel in Figs 5 to 8 has a frame in which is a hinged door 20. The door 20 has an opening or openings for the identification of visitors; as before each such opening may be closed by a grille. Alternatively, the whole door may be of, for example, open-work wrought-iron construction.
Claims (5)
1. A security panel comprising a panel as defined fixed adjacent to an aperture so as to be free to pivot, a means of limiting movement of the panel thus restraining the aperture closure member when in contact with the panel, a facility for releasably securing the panel in position and provision for the transference of items through the panel.
2. A security panel as claimed in Claim 1 wherein provision is made within the panel for a hinged and lockable gate for access and egress independently from the protected closure member.
3. A security panel as claimed in Claims 1 and 2 wherein the provision for the transference of items through the panel is a grillage, mesh or lockable hinged cover.
4. A security panel as claimed in any preceeding Claim wherein the panel is secured by a folding, locking bar permanently attached to both the panel and the aperture closure member or adjacent surface.
5. A security panel substantially as described herein with reference to Figs. 1 to 8 of the accompanying drawings.
