Abstract
A temporary barrier for bridging the gap between two opposed surfaces, for example, in securing a broken window or doorway against unauthorised entry, including a rigid planar frame having legs extending from one end and jacks extending from the other, the jacks having ratchets and the legs having cam means which, when rotated hold the barrier firmly between the surfaces. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Temporary barriers
This invention relates to temporary barriers.
PRIOR ART
If the doorways or windows of a building become damaged there is frequently the need to provide a temporary barrier across the doorway or window as protection against unauthorised entry, damage, vandalism and weather protection. It is frequently the present practise to board such openings. Under certain conditions it is desirable to provide temporary glazing for these openings and there has previously been no ready way of fitting such glazing on a temporary basis.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is the main object of this invention to provide a temporary barrier for windows, doors and the like of buildings which may be rapidly positioned and which may not be removed from position by unauthorised persons.
STATEMENTS OF INVENTION
According to the present invention there is provided a temporary barrier for bridging the gap between two opposed surfaces, comprising a rigid planar frame having two jacks extending in one direction from and within the plane of the frame and two legs extending in the opposite direction from and within the plane of the frame, the jacks each having ratchet means pivoted on the frame to retain the jacks in an extended condition and, when tripped, enable the jacks to be retracted, the legs each having cam means mounted on the frame so that, when the cam means are rotated, the legs are extended to hold the barrier firmly between the surfaces.
The frame may have two channel section members each of which receives a jack at one end and a leg at the other.
The cam means is each turned by a manual device engaging with parts of the cam means which is normally inaccessible.
Each leg may be spring urged towards its associated cam means.

SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION
Referring first to the embodiment of Figs.
to 4 a temporary barrier in the form of a door 1 extends between two surfaces 2 and 3 which may be any opening in a building or other structure. The temporary barrier comprises a frame 4 which preferably is of channel and angle section of metal or any other convenient material, for example plastics or glass reinforced plastics or timber and in this particular embodiment is provided with two channel section members 5 and 6 each of which has projecting in one direction from one end thereof jacks 7 and in the opposite direction from the other end thereof legs 8.
The jacks 7 may include a ridged or screwthreaded part and an end pad 9 which may have a rubber or plastics surface. Each jack is held in position by a ratchet 10 pivoted on the frame at 11.
Each leg 8 is connected to a baseplate 12 which may be faced with rubber or plastics or separate baseplates may be used for the two legs. Each leg 8 includes a bearing plate 13 urged by a spring 14 towards the surface of a cam 15 rotated by means of a suitable tool engaging a spindle 16 having flats. Any other convenient form of rotating the cam 15 may be provided.
The frame 4 is provided with a door panel 17 hinged to the frame at 18 and secured by locks turned through keyholes 19.
In order to position the temporary barrier illustrated in Fig. 1 to 4 between the two surfaces 2 and 3 the barrier is roughly positioned and then the two jacks 7 are extended until the pads 9 contact the surface 2. In this position the faceplate 12 will contact the surface 3 but the barrier will not be fixed firmly in position. During extension of the jacks 7 the ratchets 10 will trip and will prevent retraction of the jacks 7. In order firmly to fix the barrier in position a tool rotates the cams 15 which forces the legs 8 outwardly. Closure and locking of the door panel 17 will prevent unauthorised access to the spindles 16 for releasing the pressure on the legs 8.
A further embodiment of a temporary barrier in accordance with the invention is illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8. In this embodiment, instead of the barrier being in the form of a doorway it is in the form of a mesh screen having a metal mesh 20 in-filling a frame 4.
In this particular embodiment the frame 4 is larger in dimensions than the window opening it is intended to cover and therefore the jacks 7 and end pads 9 are located behind but yet in the general plane of the framework as illustrated in Fig. 6. The ratchets 10 engage the jacks 7 as in the previous embodiment.
Legs 8 are also provided as in the previous embodiment with cams 15 engaging bearing plates 13 urged against the cam surfaces by spring 14. An adjusting spindle 16 is provided in this embodiment with keyways instead of flats so that a suitable tool may be used to rotate the cams 15. The barrier is positioned in a similar manner to that described in relation to the previous embodiment.
The temporary barriers of the invention may be finished by being plated or painted and the sizes of the barriers may be desired to suit the particular applications.
Claims (5)
1. A temporary barrier for bridging the gap between two opposed surfaces, comprising a rigid planar frame having two jacks extending in one direction from and within the plane of the frame and two legs extending in the opposite direction from and within the plane of the frame, the jacks each having ratchet means pivoted on the frame to retain the jacks in an extended condition and, when tripped, enable the jacks to be retracted, the legs each having cam means mounted on the frame so that, when the cam means are rotated, the legs are extended to hold the barrier firmly between the surfaces.
2. A temporary barrier as claimed in Claim 1, in which the frame has two channel section members each of which receives a jack at one end and a leg at the other.
3. A temporary barrier as claimed in either
Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which each of the cam means is turned by a manual device engaging with a part of each cam means not normally accessible.
4. A temporary barrier as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which each leg is spring urged towards its associates cam means.
5. A temporary barrier for bridging the gap between two opposed surfaces substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
