Abstract

A package comprises a compact disc record (2) enclosed in a container made from a single sheet of card comprising a square base (1) having sides substantially equal to the disc diameter, flaps (3) folded over to substantially cover the record, a transverse flap (6) folded down over the flaps (3) and a closure flap (11) folded up for a tab (13) to pass beneath an area of flap (6) lying between edge (10) and slot (9) and then through slot (9). When open the card presents on both faces ample area for printed matter. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Compact disc record package This invention relates to compact disc record packages, that is to say packages wherein a compact disc record is protected and secured in a container.
So called "compact disc records" are digitally recorded records generally less than five inches in diameter and used for sound reproduction. However, such records could also be used for very short video programmes.
The packaging of compact disc records presents a problem in that a simple envelope matching the diameter of the disc provides much too little space for receiving the printed matter (e.g. programme notes, historical information, pictures, advertisements and so forth) usually to be found on packages for normal twelve inch records, which may provide less playing time than a compact record.
One object of the present invention is, therefore, to provide a compact disc record package comprising a container that presents sufficient space for displaying adequate printed matter pertaining to the disc record.
According to the invention, a compact disc record package comprises a compact disc record as hereinbefore defined and a container made from a single sheet of card folded over the disc and interlocked to provide a neatly fitting and secure container for the disc, the card comprising a square base having a side substantially equal to the diameter of the disc, flaps on opposite sides of the base and folded over the disc and substantially covering the disc, a transverse fLap and closure flap respectively on upper and lower edges of the base and folded over the side flaps with the closure flap extending over the transverse flap, the closure flap at its edge remote from said lower edge being formed with a tab passing beneath a portion of the transverse flap and said base.
It will be appreciated that the container requires no adhesive to ensure that the disc is securely in position. It has been found that this form of container has highly significant advantages in relation to compact disc records.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, a compact disc record package will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a plan of a compact disc record placed on a sheet of card shaped to be folded over the record and interlocked to provide a neatly fitting and secure container for the record.
The shaped card comprises a square base 1 having a side substantially equal in length to the diameter of a compact disc record 2 placed thereon.
The base 1 has lateral flaps 3 that are to be folded along fold lines 4 to lie against the exposed face of the disc record 2 with their edges 5 almost in contact with one another.
Extending upwards from the base 1 is a transverse flap 6 having a central rectangular recess 7.
The flap 6 is joined to the base 1 along fold lines 8 with an intervening central slot 9 slightly shorter than the transverse edge 10 of the recess 7.
After the lateral flaps 3 have been folded inwards, the transverse flap 6 is folded down over them and a closure flap 11 is folded up along a fold line 11, 12 at the lower edge of the base 1. At the edge of the closure flap 11 remote from the fold line 12 there is a central tab 13 located between shoulder edges 14 which, when the closure flap 11 has been folded upwards are substantially in alignment with the transverse edge 10 of the recess 7.
As the closure flap 11 is being folded upwards as aforesaid, the tab 13 is passed beneath the area of the transverse flap 6 that lies between the transverse edge 10 and slot 9 and then through the slot 9 so as to project above the closed package. The tab, therefore, locks the package in the closed condition and may be used to identify the package in a storing or filing system. It may also be finished with an aperture 15 enabling, for example, the package to be hung on a peg. In order to give the tab greater strength it may be extended by a mirror image of itself to be folded back and retained like tha tab 15 between the transverse flap 6 and side flaps 3.
As will be clear from the drawing the container, when opened, presents on both faces a very substantial area, compared with the area of the disc record, to receive adequate printed matter relating to the record.
1. A compact disc record package comprising a compact disc record as hereinbefore defined and a container made from a single sheet of card folded over the disc and interlocked to provide a neatly fitting and secure container for the disc, the card comprising a square base having a side substantially equal to the diameter of the disc, flaps on opposite sides of the base and folded over the disc and substantially covering the disc, a transverse flap and closure flap respectively on upper and lower edges of the base and folded over the side flaps with the closure flap extending over the transverse flap, the closure flap at its edge remote from said lower edge being formed with a tab passing beneath a portion of the transverse flap and through a slot in the fold line between said transverse flap and said base.
2. A compact disc record package according to claim 1, in which the transverse flap is formed with a recess in its edge remote from the fold line between said transverse flap and said base, said tab passing beneath the portion of said transverse flap between said last-mentioned fold line and said recess and the edges of said closure flap on opposite sides of the tab being substantially in alignment with the base of said recess.
3. A compact disc record package substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
4. A compact disc record package comprising a compact disc record as hereinbefore defined and a container made from a single sheet of card folded
