Description
SPECIFICATION
Construction of modular buildings
The present invention relates to the construction of modular buildings, which may have very different applications in all those places where it is important to have a complete construction assembled in a short period of time and in a form which can be dismantled and recovered, the invention being particularly advantageous in places where the workforce is limited or non-existant.
The above-mentioned advantages may be obtained for example in the construction of housing, schools, clinics or small emergency hospitals, offices, work sites, hostels, motels or bungalows, restaurants and collective kitchens, changing rooms for work sites or sports grounds, etc. The structures obtained can be modern and comfortable.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a modular building, constructed from at least one transpcrt container which is arranged such that it is supported and secured, by means used for securing the container during transport, on a plurality of beams which have been removed from the container and positioned in situ so as to constitute a support structure, which container has been provided with double walls, outer longitudinal portions of which have been withdrawn and arranged as a base flooring adjacent the base of the container, which forms a flooring proper, above the said support structure, whilst outer end walls, which during transport acted as covers, are articulated in a hinghed manner to the container and have been rotated in order to situate them such that they form front portions, which front is compelled by means of a number of wall panels which have been transported in the container, are connected to one another, are fixed at the bottom on the afore-mentioned flooring and at the top are retained by means of crossbar which is connected to the aforementioned articulated covers.
According tc another aspect of the invention there is provided a method of constructing a modular building, using at least one transport container, wherein the container is arranged such that it is supported and secured, by means previously used for securing the container during transport, on a plurality of beams which are removed from the container and are positioned in situ so as to constitute a support structure, which container is provided with double walls, the outer longitudinal portions of which are withdrawn and arranged as a base flooring adjacent the base of the container, which forms the flooring proper, above the said support structure whilst the outer end walls, which during transport acted as covers, are articulated in a hinged manner to the container and are rotated in order to situate them such that they form front portions, which front is completed by means of a number of wall panels which have been transported in the container, are connected to one another, are fixed at the bottom on the aforementioned flooring and at the top are retained by means of a crossbar which is connected to the afore-mentioned articulated covers.

Figure 1 8 is a longitudinal section view which illustrates schematically the superposition of two modules or building units; and
Figure 1 9 is a transverse section view which likewise shows the said superposition.
Referring to the drawings, in accordance with the invention at least cne standardized transport container is used, however, in the case which is illustrated as an example, two containers 1 (Figs. 13, 14 and 15) are disposed such that they are supported and fas tened by their conventional fastening means (twist lock) on a support structure formed by a number of beams 2 which intersect one another and are connected at their intersection zones at which the said beams rest on supports 3 in the ground or the earth 3a of the installation site where there is provided a recess 3b for the accommodation of the said support structure.
The containers 1 are provided with double walls, the external longitudinal portions 4 of which are withdrawn and arranged as a base flooring and rest on the afore-mentioned support structure between the two containers 1 (Fig. 13). The said walls are connected to one another by means of a tubular section 5 (Fig.
4) which is inserted between two adjacent edges of both contiguous walls and is supported on a number of L-shaped bearing sections 6 which are rigid with a tubular frame 7 of the said walls between which there is arranged above the tubular section 5, a part 8 which is connected to edge or border flooring 9 which is flush with the flooring 9' incorporated in the walls 4, which part 8 is secured to the section 5 by means of screws 10 which pass through the said part and through the section and carry nuts 11.The walls 4 are positioned with their ends adjacent at the base, provided with the flooring proper, of the containers 1, to which the said walls are secured, as can be seen in Figure 5, by means of a section 1 2 which has the shape of an inverted L and projects laterally from the frame 7 of each of the above-mentioned walls and bears on a step portion 1 3 which surrounds the container 1 at the bottom and on which step portion 1 3 there bears a part 14 which at one edge rests on the edge of the frame 7 and is connected at its upper face to the flooring 8" which is flush with the floor
ing 8' incorporated in the walls 4, which part
14 is secured on the step portion 1 3 with the
interposition of another part 1 5 and by means of screws 16.
The external end walls 1 7 of the containers
1 which, during transport, act as covers, are articulated in a hinged manner to the said containers and can be rotated in order to situate them such that they form front portions, as can be seen in Figure 14, which front is completed by a number of front wall
panels 1 8 (Figures 6 and 7) which are trans
ported in the container and are connected to
one another at their vertical edges, which
panels bear on an edge of the base flooring
by means of a flange 1 9 of the lower edge,
whilst they bear by means of a flange 20 of the upper edge against an upper crossbar 21
(Figure 8) which advantageously comprises a
plurality of sections which can be connected to one another, the flanges 1 9 and 20 com
prising holes for the positioning of elements
for fastening the front wall panels 1 8 to the flooring and the crossbar 21. The ends of this crossbar comprise two orthogonal extensions 22 which bear on the upper edge of the wallcovers 17, where they are secured by means of screws in order to fasten the said wallcovers. The front wall panels 1 8 have openings corresponding to doors and windows.
The assembly comprises a plurality of panels 23 which are transported in the containers 1 and are connected to one another so as to form the partitions 24 of the rooms of the building, which panels are inserted by pressing at their lower edge together with two plates 25 which are fixed at the two opposite faces of the said panels 23 in corresponding
U-shaped sections 26 provided in the walls 4 forming the base flooring, the afore-mentioned panels 23 comprising plates 27 which form the base parts of the rooms and bear on the flooring, as can be seen in Figure 9. There is included in the building the furniture for the rooms which can be transported in the containers 1 and is illustrated, for example, in
Figure 14.
The upright feet 28 of the corners of the containers 1 constitute the pillars of the buildings, whose structure is formed by the containers themselves on which there bear the carriers 29 which support the beams 30 for supporting the complete roofing 31 which is transported with the said carriers in the containers, which roofing carriers are connected on the containers by means of pairs of lugs 32 (Figures 11 and 1 2) which form a forked part in the lower edge of the carriers 29 and have apertures for accommodating a bolt 33 for articulation with a further lug 34 which is interposed between the lugs 32 and is rigid with the conventional elements 35 provided in the upper part of the containers for fastening in the corners thereof.
As Figure 14 shows, one of the containers carries the bathroom and the kitchen of the building with all the furniture and services which have been produced in their entirety in the workshop and installed on the site of use, this being possible by coupling the connections to the external water and electricity supply networks.
In accordance with the improvements, a
number of building units may be juxtaposed and superposed, as described, in order to
broaden the building horizontally and form
different storeys. In the case of building units
being superposed, each level has a second support structure which is generally desig
nated 36 in Figure 1 7 and which, similarly to the substructure of the base, comprises a
number of beams 2', similar to the beams 2, which likewise intersect one another, are con
nected, and may also be transported in a container, which second support structure is anchored by means of conventional elements for securing the containers in their corners at the upper part thereof. There bear on the said
second support structure the containers and the horizontal flooring walls, as well as the remaining components necessary for forming the corresponding storeys. A wide variety of combinations is possible with the improvements depending on the particular requirements, given that the buildings may be suitably extended in the horizontal direction simply by positioning building units next to one another and it possible to construct storeys by superposing units. If it is desired to construct a relatively small building by means of one single container, instead of with two as has been illustrated and described, the longitudinal outer walls which are withdrawn are arranged adjacent both sides of the container, at the sides thereof, i.e. with the container arranged centrally with respect to the rooms which extend from the said sides, above the said walls which form the base flooring.
Owing to the improvements to which the present invention relates, the buildings can be assembled extremely rapidly in a few hours and they can likewise be dismantled in a very short amount of time, unlike conventional prefabricated buildings.
Moreover, it should be noted that the improvements allow for great variations in shape, size and materials of the components used, as well as in the production details of the system used, provided that the variations involved do not alter the essence of the invention.
