Abstract

A container of moulded plastics material comprises a box portion 2 with an opening at one end and a pair of lid members 3,4 integrally formed with the box portion 2 and each integrally pivotable relative to the box portion 2 between a position in which the opening is accessible and a position in which the opening is closed, said lid members 3,4 being provided with means 5-7 for securing them together in a closed state. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A container This invention relates to a container, e.g. for cigarettes, cigars or cigarillos.
According to the present invention there is provided a container of plastics material, in the form of a box portion with an opening at one end and a pair of lid members integrally formed with the box portion and each integrally pivotable relative to the box portion between a position in which the opening is accessible and a position in which the opening is closed, said lid members being provided with means for securing them together in a closed state.
Any suitable thermoplastic plastics material may be employed, although the plastics material should be one capable of forming an integral hinge along a line of reduced thickness in the material. Such materials include polyalkylenes and polyvinyl chloride. The material is preferably polyethylene or polypropylene.
The invention also includes a method of forming a container of the type defined hereinbefore by moulding in a single operation, the said lid members being moulded, together with their integral hinges, generally simultaneously with the moulding of the box portion. Preferably the container is injection moulded. Preferably the lid members are so formed that they are biased into an open state, thus permitting one handed opening of the container if a suitable engaging means is provided.
Referring to the drawings, an embodiment of the containerofthe present invention will now be described, by way of example only, In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container according to the present invention in a closed state; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the container of Figure 1 in an open state.
A container 1 of injection-moulded semi-resilient plastics material comprises a box portion 2 open at one end and a pair of lid members 3, 4. Each lid member 3,4 is integrally formed with said box portion 2 adjacent said one end and is provided with an integral hinge 5 at its connection with the box portion 2. The container is so moulded that the lid members 3,4 are biased into an open state by the resiliency of the plastics material from which they are formed, i.e. approximately into the position shown in Figure 2.
A clip member 5 is provided on the member 3 for engagement with a corresponding recess 6 provided in lid member 4 whereby the lid members 3,4 can be secured together in a closed state. A stud 7 is provided disengaging the clip 5 from the recess 6 to open the container 1. By virtue of the bias applied to the lid members the container can be opened with one hand.
An optical wall 8 surrounding said open end of the box portion 2 may be provided to retain the contents, e.g. cigarillos in position and to prevent them from being trapped between edges of the lid members as they are closed. An optional longitudinal extending division 9 may be provided within the box portion 2, to separate the contents and to give reinforcement to the container.

2. A container according to claim 1, composed of a polyalkylene or polyvinylchloride material.
3. A container according to claim 2, composed of polypropylene or polyethylene.
4. A container according to any preceding claim, wherein the engaging means comprises a clip on one lid member and a recess for the clip on the other lid member.
5. A container, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
6. A container as claimed in any preceding claim, adapted to contain cigarettes, cigars or cigarillos.
7. A method of producing a container as claimed in claim 1,which comprises integrally forming said lid members and said box portion in a single moulding operation.
8. A method according to claim 7 wherein injection moulding is performed.
9. A method according to claim 8, wherein the container is formed from a polyalkylene or polyvinyl chloride material.
10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the container is formed from polyethylene or polypropylene.
11. The features herein before described, or their equivalents, in any novel selection.

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. SPECIFICATION A container This invention relates to a container, e.g. for cigarettes, cigars or cigarillos. According to the present invention there is provided a container of plastics material, in the form of a box portion with an opening at one end and a pair of lid members integrally formed with the box portion and each integrally pivotable relative to the box portion between a position in which the opening is accessible and a position in which the opening is closed, said lid members being provided with means for securing them together in a closed state. Any suitable thermoplastic plastics material may be employed, although the plastics material should be one capable of forming an integral hinge along a line of reduced thickness in the material. Such materials include polyalkylenes and polyvinyl chloride. The material is preferably polyethylene or polypropylene. The invention also includes a method of forming a container of the type defined hereinbefore by moulding in a single operation, the said lid members being moulded, together with their integral hinges, generally simultaneously with the moulding of the box portion. Preferably the container is injection moulded. Preferably the lid members are so formed that they are biased into an open state, thus permitting one handed opening of the container if a suitable engaging means is provided. Referring to the drawings, an embodiment of the containerofthe present invention will now be described, by way of example only, In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container according to the present invention in a closed state; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the container of Figure 1 in an open state. A container 1 of injection-moulded semi-resilient plastics material comprises a box portion 2 open at one end and a pair of lid members 3, 4. Each lid member 3,4 is integrally formed with said box portion 2 adjacent said one end and is provided with an integral hinge 5 at its connection with the box portion 2. The container is so moulded that the lid members 3,4 are biased into an open state by the resiliency of the plastics material from which they are formed, i.e. approximately into the position shown in Figure 2. A clip member 5 is provided on the member 3 for engagement with a corresponding recess 6 provided in lid member 4 whereby the lid members 3,4 can be secured together in a closed state. A stud 7 is provided disengaging the clip 5 from the recess 6 to open the container 1. By virtue of the bias applied to the lid members the container can be opened with one hand. An optical wall 8 surrounding said open end of the box portion 2 may be provided to retain the contents, e.g. cigarillos in position and to prevent them from being trapped between edges of the lid members as they are closed. An optional longitudinal extending division 9 may be provided within the box portion 2, to separate the contents and to give reinforcement to the container. CLAIMS
1. A container of plastics material, in the form of a box portion with an opening at one end and a pair of lid members integrally formed with the box portion and each integrally pivotable relative to the box portion between a position in which the opening is accessible and a position in which the opening is closed, said lid members being provided with means for securing them together in a closed state.
2. A container according to claim 1, composed of a polyalkylene or polyvinylchloride material.
3. A container according to claim 2, composed of polypropylene or polyethylene.
4. A container according to any preceding claim, wherein the engaging means comprises a clip on one lid member and a recess for the clip on the other lid member.
5. A container, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
6. A container as claimed in any preceding claim, adapted to contain cigarettes, cigars or cigarillos.
7. A method of producing a container as claimed in claim 1,which comprises integrally forming said lid members and said box portion in a single moulding operation.
8. A method according to claim 7 wherein injection moulding is performed.
9. A method according to claim 8, wherein the container is formed from a polyalkylene or polyvinyl chloride material.
10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the container is formed from polyethylene or polypropylene.
