Abstract

The article of furniture is in two parts: (a) rectangular work top (22) with a pair of legs (24) fixed at one edge, and (b) a storage unit (10) having a top surface (12) usable as a worktop, and drawers (14). In operative position the worktop (22) is supported, et its edge opposite to the legs, upon one edge of the storage unit, and held in position by cooperating pegs (30) in holes in the surface (12) of the storage unit; it can then be used as a desk. For storage the worktop unit is lifted and fits over the storage unit with the legs close thereto, thus occupying minimal space. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Furniture assembly providing a worktop This invention relates to an article of furniture which provides a table or desk including storage space and a worktop.
It is an object of the invention to provide a convenient collapsible worktable with storage space, which is especially useful in the home where space is restricted.
According to the invention we provide an assembly of (a) a rectangularworktop having a pair of legs fixed perpendiculartothetop at one pair of adjacent corners, and (b) a storage unit having aworktopofa height similarto that ofthe worktop (a) and of a size to allowtheworktop (a) to be stored on the unit (b) with the legs close to the sides ofthe unit, the combination being constructed so that in operative position the worktop (a) is supported at one end by its legs and at the other end by one edge ofthe unit (b) and means are provided for detachably securing the combination in that position.
The invention will befurtherdescribed by reference to the embodimentshown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:- Fig. is a three-quarter perspective view of the assembly in working position; Fig. is a front perspective view ofthe assembly in storage position; and Fig. 3 isfragmentaryviewofthetop of the storage unit alone.
The storage unit 10 has a rectangular top surface 12 which is suitable for use as a worktop, and three storage drawers 14, and is mounted on four casters 16. Inthetop left-hand edge ofthe surface 12 are two holes 18, seen in Fig. 3, where the other part of the assembly has been removed. Apart from these holes, this storage unit is of conventional structure.
The worktop unit 20 has a rectangularworktop 22 of a size slightly larger in direction "A" than the width "B" ofthe surface 12, and at one end a pair of legs 24 braced together neartheir base by a tie 26 and attheir top each is braced by a member 28. A pair of pegs 30 are provided on the underside ofthe other end ofthe top 20 to fit into the holes 18 in the top 12, to hold the assembly in operative position as shown in Fig. 1. In use it can serve as a desk or other working surface.
When stored, as shown in Fig. 2, the worktop unit 20 fits over the storage unit 20 with the two legs closely on each sidethereof, so that the combination can be stored in a minimum of space.
The storage unit could have any other desired arrangement of drawers, or could have shelves in place of drawers. Any other convenient means of attachment could be used in place of the pegs 30 and holes 18 so long as this means serves to securely hold the two units together bythe weight of the top 22 whilst allowing rapid detachmentwhen desired by simply lifting the top 22.An additional leg or legs might be provided under the top 22, for greater stability, provided that these also fit closely around the storage unitwhen the assembly is stored.
1. An assembly of (a) a rectangularworktop having a pair of legs fixed perpendicularto the top at one pair of adjacent corners, and (b) a storage unit having a worktop of a heightsimilarto that of the worktop (a) and of a size to allowtheworktop (a) to be stored on the unit (b) with the legs close to the sides of the unit, the combination being constructed so that in operative position theworktop (a) is supported at one end by its legs and at the other end by one edge ofthe unit (b) and means are providedfor detachably securing the combination in that position.
2. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the means for securing the combination in operative position comprises corresponding holes and projecting portions on the edge of the top ofthe storage unit and the edge ofthe underside ofthe worktop unit.
3. An assembly of a worktop and storage unit, substantially as hereinbefore described with refer ence to the accompanying drawing.
