Abstract

In a drain inlet fitting 2 having a counterweighted valve flap 6 to prevent emission of odours, the fitting 2 is detachably supported, as by screw threads or resilient means, in a sleeve 8 fixed in the drain pipe, and has a sloping wall 3 which overlies the valve pivot 4 and provides a recess accommodating the valve counterweight 7. The inlet grating 1 is dished and has apertures shaped to promote swirl. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Automatic sewer valve The present invention relates to an improved automatic sewer valve installed at the mouth of the drainage route emptying into a sewer.
Normally the valve is closed to prevent the unpleasant odour from entering the house through the drainage route, and it automatically opens when the accumulation of waste water rises up to a predetermined valve to discharge the latter into the sewer.
Yet known means of this kind can be typically exemplified by the UK Patent No.
314,569 and UK Patent No. 317,829. In the former, a flap closing the opening lower end is pivoted on a pivot axis running along a cord of the valve seat and divided by the axis into two parts whereof one part is much heavier than the other, thereby allowing a normally closing of the valve by gravitation, and opening only when the accumulation on its upstream reaches a predetermined weight. However, closing the opening with the whole flap, its pivot joint is directly exposed to the drainwash, and therefore suffers severe corrosion which considerably shortens its life. In the latter's case, only a major part of, but not the whole flap is used to close the opening, and the pivot joint is shielded behind the opening by a half-dome structure, which defines an internal space to receive the heavier second part of the flap in its opening position. This does remedy the drawback of the former, but it is not altogether satisfactory. The half-dome structure in the pipeline is hostile to a smooth flow from the viewpoint of fluid dynamics, and soild fouls tend to accumulate. Also, its relatively bulky, awkward structure occupies more space.
Accordingly, it is the chief object of this invention to provide an improved sewer valve, where the aforesaid disadvantages of the prior arts are satisfactorily obviated or mitigated.
According to a feature of this invention there is provided a slope dipping from the upper edge of the valve seat proximally to the lower edge of the valve seat and its lower margin defines one side of the opening of the lower end thereof. The pivot pin lies behind the shield formed by the slope and extends substantially parallel to the lower edge thereof. The space behind the slope allows the entry of the heavier half of the flip in its opening state. The resulting structure is compact and favorable for a smooth draining.
According to another feature of this invention, its seat can comprise an inner seat which comprises the aforesaid structure and which is detachable for cleaning purpose, and an outer seat which is permanently fixed in the pipeline.
Numerous other features and advantages of this invention would become apparent when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which by way of example Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a valve, Figure 2 is a sectional view of the valve.
With reference to Fig. 1, this invention comprises slotted plate (1), slope seat (2) (or inner seat), hinge joint (4), pivot pin (4), valve flap (5), and balance body (7) etc., wherein slotted plate (1) is snugly fitted into the brim of seat (2), while balance body (7) is fixed onto flap (6), which is in turn, pivotally secured in position by passing pin (4) through hinge joint (4) and the hinge joints (66) provided on flap (6). As shown in Fig. 2, the weight of balance body forces flap (6) to stay at its closing position. Slotted plate (1) slightly bulges downwardly, and is provided with a plurality of slots which are vortically arranged to facilitate the discharge through these slots.
In this embodiment, each slot (11) has one side (1 1 a) of which the curvature is larger than the other (11 b), and the height of the former is lower than the other, thereby causing a clockwise whirlpool to accelerate the removal of water. Slope (3) defines a space for receiving the weighted side (i.e. the side provided with balance body (7)) of valve flap (6) in its opening position. Normally valve flap (6) remains sealingly closed against the lower edge of seat (2). When the accumulation of flap (6) is such that it produces a total torque enough to overcome that of balance body (7), the flap opens to discharge the accumulation, which is mainly waste water, probably with tiny solid waste capable of passing through the slots (11).Having thus evacuated all or most of the accumulation, the flap gravitationally resumes its closing position and seals the opening of seat (2) again.
Inner seat (2) can be threadedly or resiliently fitted in the outer seat (8) which is permanently fixed in the pipe line, in a sealing yet detachable manner, so that it can be dismounted for cleaning purpose. Preferably, the inner seat can be formed by hard yet slightly resilient plastic material to ensure a better sealing.
This invention presents several advantages over existing means for similar purpose. Structurally simple, its manufacture and assemblage is fairly easy, and therefore largely reducing the cost of production. The hinge joint is not in direct contact with the accumulated water, thus prolonging its duration of life.
With the vortically arranged slots and the slope, the accumulated waste water and its solid content can more rapidly be removed.
The cleverly designed compact structure is space saving, and considerably facilitates the work of piping.
