Description
SPECIFICATION
Appetite suppressant
This invention relates to appetite suppressants and in particular, but not exclusively, to compositions for use in assisting dieting.
There is a considerable market in what are known as dietades and principally these fall into two classes. The first consist of quite ordinary foods made up in low calorie unis and sold at ridiculous prices whilst the second comprise drugs which are designed to suppress the appetite. A number of the drugs do successfully affect the taker's appetite, but they have all tended to have unpleasant side effects and many are suspected of being carcinogenic. Further, there is a large number of people nowadays who do not wish to use man-made drugs.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an appetite suppressant composition made from natural ingredients and easily prepared.
From one aspect, the invention consists in an appetite suppressant composition including by weight between 20% and 65% dried Dill leaf and 20% to 65% Dill seed. The composition may further include Fennel seed, which may constitute between 20% and 30% by weight and in a preferred embodiment. The composition also includes Caraway seed, for example, between 10% and 20% by weight.
From another aspect the invention consists in an appetite suppressant comprises by weight: 24% to 30% dried Dill leaf 24% to 30% Dill seed 24% to 30% Fennel seed 10% to 18% Caraway seed.
In any of the above cases, at least one of the ingredients may be at least partly replaced by dried Centaury.
Before the composition is taken, it is necessary for oils within the seeds to emulsify the
Dill leaf, and this can only occur if the outer shell of the seed is cracked or penetrated in some way in order to release these oils.
Conveniently, the composition is prepared as an infusion, for example, by pouring boiling water on the composition and leaving it to stand for at least 20 minutes. The boiling water will crack the seed open. Preferably, about 200 mls of water is added to each 2.5 grams of the composition.
The infusion may be prepared just before the composition is to be taken by the user or it may be prepared in a concentrated form and diluted to acceptable proportions. In addition, the invention could be freeze dried or otherwise preserved.
It has long been known that the Dill leaf had some effect on the performance of the human stomach, in particular that it produced flatulence if taken in any significant quantities.
Surprisingly, it has been found that if the Dill leaf is prepared as an infusion with an appropriate quantity of Dill seed or a mixture of Dill,
Fennel or Caraway seed, then the undesirable effects of the Dill leaf are overcome and, as a result, it can be consumed in much greater concentrations. Quite unexpectedly, these greater concentrations of Dill leaf infusion causes a feeling of repleteness in the taker so that the desire for food is considerably reduced.
Thus, by taking the composition set out above, either as an infusion, or in any other form in which the oils from the seeds have emulsified the released chemicals from the
Dill, before each mealtime, the user can reduce their desire for food and hence their calorific intake.
The dose can be varied in accordance with individual tastes and reactions, but generally, one cup of the infusion will suffice.
From a further aspect an appetite suppressant composition including by weight between 20% to 65% dried Dill leaf and 20% to 30% of Dill seed.
The composition may comprise by weight:
Dill Weed 44%
Dill Seed 22%
Fennel Seed 22%
Caraway Seed 12%
