Abstract

A map structure comprises a road or route map or sea chart, provided on a flexible and water-resistant sheet of material such as a rubberised or water-proof nylon fabric, the map being printed, or otherwise applied, onto the fabric which is, or is thereafter rendered, water-resistant. The sheet may alternatively be a woven cotton fabric which is rendered showerproof after printing or may be of silk or polyester fibres.

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of maps This invention relates to improvements in or relating to the manufacturing of maps, and, in particular, to an improved map structure and method of making the same.
Conventionally, maps, in particular road or route maps or sea charts, are printed on paper, sometimes linen-backed, and are folded for easy handling.
However, the paper on which the map is printed is liable to tear or crack along the folds making parts of the map illegible. Such maps are also difficult to handle in the open (especially in high winds and similar conditions) and can be unmanageable when required quickly, for example during night rally driving etc. The known maps are also adversely affected by environmental conditions, such as rain or sea spray, for example.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a map which overcomes or at least mitigates the disadvantage mentioned above.
Accordingly, in one aspect thereof, the present invention provides a map structure in which a road or route map or sea chart is provided on a flexible and water-resistant sheet of material.
The term "water-resistant" as used herein is to be understood to include both shower- or water-proof sheets of material, such as the rubberised or "shower-proofed" fabric used for very lightweight mackintoshs.
Suitably, the sheet of material on which the map is provided in a map structure embodying the invention is a fabric which is preferably a woven fabric.
The fabric may be made from any suitable natural or synthetic fibres or mixture of such fibres and examples of suitable materials are cotton, silk, polyester, nylon or polycotton.
The fabric may be rendered water-resistant by any suitable process, such as by a rubberising or otherwise shower-proofing the fabric before and/or after it is printed with the desired road or route map.
In another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of making a map structure, comprising printing, or otherwise applying, a road or route map or sea chart on a flexible sheet of material which is, or is thereafter rendered, water-resistant.
In orderthatthe invention may be readily understood, embodiments of map structures and methods according to the invention will now be described, by way of example.
In one map structure embodying the invention, a route or road map or sea chart for use by tourists, motorists, walkers, sailors orthe like is printed on one surface of a flexible sheet of water-resistant plastics material. The material is a very fine, lightweight, rubberised, water- or shower-proof woven nylon fabric having the said one surface prepared to receive print which is applied to the surface of the sheet by any suitable printing process. If necessary, the one surface of a the fabric may be treated after printing to restore its water-resistant property.
Another map structure embodying the invention is formed by printing a road or route map on one surface of a fine woven cotton fabric, such as lawn, which is not initially water-resistant but which is rendered shower-proof by appropriate treatment after the printing step.
Such map structures do not, unlike conventional maps, need to be folded for convenient use but may be simply spread out on the lap of the user.
Moreover, the map structures embodying the invention will not crack or tear easily during use or when folded up or rolled up for storage.
The map, which is durable and impervious to the weather and environmental conditions (for example, rain snow or sea spray), may also be used as a protective and water-proof cover, or may be spread over the ground to be sat on or to be lain on, for example when inspecting the underneath of a vehicle.
1. A map structure in which a road or route map or sea chart is provided on a flexible and waterresistant sheet of material.
2. A map structure according to Claim 1, in which the sheet of material on which the map is provided is a fabric.
3. A map structure according to Claim 2, in which the sheet of material is a woven fabric.
4. A map structure according to claim 2 or 3, in which the fabric is made from natural fibres, such as cotton or silk.
5. A map structure according to claim 2 or 3, in which the fabric is made from synthetic fibres, such as polyester or nylon.
6. A map structure according to claim 2 or 3, in which the fabric is made of a mixture of natural and synthetic fibres.
7. A method of making a map structure, comprising printing, or otherwise applying, a road or route map or sea chart on a flexible sheet of material which is, or is thereafter rendered, water-resistant.
8. A road or route map or sea chart structure substantially as hereinbefore described.
9. A method of making a road or route map structure substantially as hereinbefore described.
10. Any novel feature or combination of features described herein.
