Abstract

A pipe with valves at each end is connected between two combustion cylinders to relieve compression between them when only a small proportion of the engine's maximum power is needed for external work. The valves can be operated by the accelerator. When the valves are closed, the engine functions normally.

Description

SPECIFICATION Combustion cylinder decompressor This invention shuts off fuel and releases compression from one or more pairs of cylinders in an engine using a pipe between each two cylinders, such that while one is on its compression stroke, the other is on its induction stroke. This saves energy lost in compressing air, and neutralises fuel induction from carburettor. The pipe is nearly the same diameter as a spark plug so that it may fit easily into a cylinder head beside plug and valves. Within each end of the pipe is a valve similar to, but much smaller than, the ordinary valves. They are operated by cam lobes which are controlled by cables or otherwise. An auxiliary throttle can be placed in the air inlet for each cylinder to ensure that no gas enters. When reduced engine effort will suffice, pipe valves are opened and auxiliary throttles are closed. For fuel injection the supply is interrupted by pipes returning fuel to pump reservoir, or separate pumps are used for each set of cylinders. This device could be used with existing 'part load cut out' systems and also controlled manually or by accelerator position. It is particularly suitable for diesel engines because of work done against high compression.
1. A combustion cylinder decompressor for use in an internal combustion engine, consisting of an opening into the combustion cylinder head to relieve compression.
2. A combustion cylinder decompressor as claimed, with a valve of the same type as inlet and exhaust valves but small enough to fit into the aforesaid opening and preferably fitting flush with the chamber head when the valve is closed, or positioned elsewhere if necessary.
3. A combustion cylinder decompressor as claimed, in which the valves are operated by cam lobes which are controlled manually or by other automatic fuel reduction systems.
4. A combustion cylinder decompressor as claimed, in which the openings from the cylinders are connected in pairs by a closed pipe such that while one cylinder is on its compression stroke, the other is on its induction stroke, so that when the decompressor valves are open, fuel induction from a carburettor will be neutralised.
