Abstract

An agricultural machine intended for use in distributing forage or other material is of the kind which is traversed over the ground on which the material is to be distributed and comprises a container for the material, means for discharging the material from the container, means adjacent to the material discharging means for breaking up the material which is to be distributed and a conveyor for urging the material in the container towards said means for breaking up the material. In accordance with the present invention the material discharging means in the above described machine comprises an endless belt having an upper run (12), there being also provided brushes (14 & 15) which are secured in position adjacent to the lateral edges of said upper run (12) of the belt. The lower edge of each brush (14 & 15) is arranged to engage or lie closely adjacent to the upper surface of said upper run (12) of the belt in order to prevent material from falling off the edges of the belt. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Agricultural machine for distributing forage or other material This invention relates to an agricultural machine for distributing forage or other material, the machine being of the kind which is intended to be traversed over the ground on which the material is to be distributed and which comprises a container for said material, means for discharging the material from the container, means adjacent to said material discharging means for breaking up the material which is to be distributed, and conveyor means for urging the material in the container towards said means for breaking up the material.
The aforesaid means for discharging the material commonly comprises an endless belt conveyor which extends in a direction transverse to the intended direction of travel of the machine over the ground, said belt being provided along its surface with projecting lugs which engage the broken up material falling on the belt so as to move such material towards an exit opening and fling it in a sideways direction from the machine.
Furthermore, in order to prevent the material from falling off the edges of the upper run of the belt and thereafter building up on the driving or idler rollers of the belt or on the underside of the belt, it is known to use fixed strips of rubber or the like which overlap said belt edges in order to assist in retaining the material on the belt. Such strips are not however entirely satisfactory in use and accordingly it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved machine in which there are more effective means for preventing the broken up material from straying off the transverse discharge belt.
In accordance with the invention there is provided an agricultural machine for distributing forage or other material of the kind specified wherein said material discharging means comprises a transverse conveyor having an endless belt and wherein there is provided a pair of brush-like sealing elements which extend across the container so as to be respectively disposed adjacent to the edges of the upper run of said endless belt, the lower edge of each of said brush-like sealing elements being free and being arranged so that it engages or lies very closely adjacent to the upper surface of said upper run of the belt so as to be adapted in use to prevent material on the belt from straying sideways off the edges thereof.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the rear end of one example of an agricultural machine constructed in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to the drawing the partial sectional view shown therein is intended to illustrate part of an agricultural machine which can be used to distribute forage or other material, the machine being arranged so that in use it will be traversed over the ground on which said material is to be distributed by means of a tractor which is also conveniently used to provide the power for driving the various parts of the machine as will be hereinafter described.
The machine is provided with a generally box like container (not shown) into which the forage or other material to be distributed will be loaded and within said container there is mounted a pair of drum-like rotatable beaters which are each driven so as to rotate about a horizontal axis, said beaters extending from side to side of the container towards the rearward end thereof and being arranged one above the other, the lower of such beaters being indicated in the drawing by reference numeral 10. Each beater is conveniently provided around its periphery with a plurality of outwardly extending lugs or strips 11 which, as the associated beater rotates, engages the material to be distributed so as to break it up into pieces of a desired size. The floor of said container is provided with a conveyor 1 a which may be in the form, as shown, of an endless belt conveyor or alternatively it can be in the form of a chain and slat conveyor. In either case said conveyor extends in a direction generally parallel wkhte the intended direction of traverse of the machine over the ground and the direction of travel of said conveyor is such that it urges material within the conveyor towards the aforesaid beaters which then break up the material moved towards them.
The machine also incorporates means for discharging the material broken up by said beaters and as shown in the drawing said discharging means incorporates a further conveyor which also comprises an endless belt conveyor of which the upper run 12 only is seen in the drawing. This discharge conveyor extends in a direction transverse to the direction of traverse of the machine over the ground and the endless belt is provided at spaced intervals along its length with a plurality of projecting lugs 13 which in use will engage material falling onto the belt. Thus the arrangement is such that the longitudinal conveyor 1 a will move material which is to be distributed towards the beater drums which rotate at relatively high speed to break up such material and deliver it into the upper run 1 2 of said transverse or discharge conveyor which then accelerates the material and flings it in a generally sideways direction through an exit opening in the container.
There is also provided, in accordance with the invention, a pair of brush-like elements which are indicated in the drawing by reference numerals 14 and 1 5 and which are conveniently secured to the side plates of the container so that they each extend across the width of the container.
Furthermore said brush-like elements 1 4 and 1 5 are located as shown respectively adajcent to the edges of the upper run 12 of the discharge conveyor, the lower edge of each brush-like element being free and being arranged to engage or lie very closely adjacent to the upper surface of said belt 12. The upper edge of each brush-like element 14 or 15 (which of course comprises a plurality of bristles or the like) is secured in a holder 1 6 or 17 which are mounted respectively on the rear wall of the container 18 and an angle strip 19 so that each element 14 and 1 5 is generally inclined to the vertical in the direction in which it extends upwardly and outwardly from said upper run 12 of the discharge conveyor.
The aforesaid brush-like elements 14 and 1 5 will in use form effective seals along the edges of the discharge conveyor and will prevent material from straying off said edges of the belt and thus prevent the material from building up on the driving or idler rollers which support the belt or on the underside of the belt itself. In addition said brush-like elements 14 and 1 5 will allow in use for relatively poor tracking of the discharge conveyor and will generally have a longer life than is the case with the hitherto used strips of rubber or like material.

Claims (3)
