Abstract
Corresponding profiled surfaces 3 and 5 of a sectional piece 2 of a first material and a block 4 of a second material are glued together to form a composite block from which segmental slices 6 are cut. The two materials are preferably of different colours. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Method of producing compound tiles having a desired visible pattern therein
The present invention relates to tiles which can be used to provide a covering for various types of surfaces, such as floors, counter, etc.
Tiles which can be attached (e.g. by gluing with resins or other similar materials) to surfaces so asto provide a desired covering thereon are well known.
The use of stone-like materials such as travertine to form these tiles is also well known.
New markets for such tiles have recently opened up in the Orient; however, duetothe particular architectural forms characterised ofthe Oriental cultures, thetilesmust be rich in ornamental details and include inlays. Up to now, such tiles have not been mass produced, but have been instead individually produced by a very expert group of artisans. Obviously, the tiles will be of a very high quality, and costly.
It is an object ofthe invention to mitigate these disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of producing compound tiles having a visible pattern therein, said method comprising the steps of cutting a sectional piece from a first block of material; providing a profile in the surface of said sectional piece offirst material; providing a second block of material which displays a surface profile which corresponds with said profile in the surface of said sectional piece; positioning said sectional piece near said second block of material such thatthe profiles thereon are separated by a space; filling said space with an adhesive so as to permanently connect said sectional piece of first material with said second block of material and thus provide a composite block, and cutting segmental slices from said composite blockso asto produce said compound tiles, each segmental slice including a portion derived from said sectional piece, a portion derived from said second blockof material and the portionwith the solidified glue which connects the material portions together, the profiles therein associated with the material portions providing the desired visible pattern in each composite tile.
Thus using the invention it is possible to provide compound tiles which can be used as floor coverings and counter coverings, as well as coverings for tables, lamps and ornamental objects, by mass production and at a iow cost, these compound tiles displaying a desired visible pattern therein and being formable from avarietyofstone-like materials such as travertine and marble.
The compound tiles are made from two different materials (different in terms of color or other characteristics) which are sized and shaped as desired and connected together by an adhesive material, the profile edges ofthe two connected materials providing the desired visible pattern.
A method embodying the present invention is hereinafter described, byway of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a first block of material from which a sectional piece has been removed in accordance with one step of the present invention:
Fig. 2 shows, on a somewhat enlarged scale, a perspective view of the sectional piece which has been removed from the first block of material shown in Fig.
1;
Fig. 3 shows, on a scale similarto that used in Fig. 1, a perspective view of the sectional piece shown in Fig.
2 after having been sculptured in accordance with the present invention, togetherwith a second block of material which has been sculptured in accordance with the present invention to mate with the sculptured portion of the sectional piece so as ultimatelyto forme composite block; and
Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of a segmental slice of the composite blockformed in accordance with the present invention, the segmental slice providing a composite tile which can be used as a covering element.
A block which is operated on in accordance with an initial step of the present invention is shown by numeral 1 in Fig. 1. This block, which has a predetermined size and shape (in Fig. 1 it has a generally box-like shape), is composed of a stone-like material, for example, travertine. Of coursethe block 1 could have some other desired shape and be composed of other stone-like materials such as marble, and it can have any of a number of desired physical characteristics such as color.
According to the present invention, a sectional piece 2 is removed from the block, e.g., by making two cuts therein with a diamond disc on a bridge cutter. Such a sectional piece 2 is indicated in phantom in Fig. 1 and is shown in full in Fig. 2. This sectional piece 2, which also has a generally box-like configuration, is seen to have two adjacent sides 2a and 2b. A number of diamond grinders, e.g. seven, are then used to provide a profile or pattern 3 on the sectional piece 2 (see Fig. 3), these diamond grinders being positioned to operate on the sides 2b and 2c of the sectional piece 2 at predetermined locations and at predetermined angles.
At this time, or at some earlier time, a second block of material 4 is sculptured bythe use of diamond grinders so asto present a profileS thereon, the profile 5 constituting a mating surface forthe profile 3 on the sectional piece 2. The second block of material 4 is preferably composed of a stone-like substance which is differentfrom that in the first block of material 1, either in composition, color and/or other desired characteristics.
Next, the sculptured sectional piece 2 is positioned quite near the sculptured second block of material 4, i.e., such that the profile 3 on the section piece 2 is spaced about3 centimetres from the profile 5 on the second block 4, and an adhesive or glue is then caused to fill the space between the two elements so asto permanently connect them together. Such a glue can consist of a transparent liquid resin which is dripped or poured into the space, and afterfilling the space, the
resin is allowed to solidify. The resulting composite
block is then cleaned in orderto remove any excess solidified glue protruding from any of its surfaces, and a diamond disc on a bridge cutter is then used to curt a number of segmental slices 6from the composite block (see Figure 4). Each segmental slice 6 will include a portion derived from the sectional piece 2, a portion derived from the second block of material 4, and the portion with the solidified glue which permanently connects these material portions together.
After teach segmental slice 6 is treated so as to provide a shiny and uniform surface, the resultant segmental slice is ready for use as a composite tile, the profiles 3 and 5 providing a desired visible pattern therein.
ltcan be readily appreciatedthatthe present invention makes possible the production of compo sitetiles of varying shapes and sizes, and composite tiles which can be easily and economicallyformed from a number of different materials.
