Abstract

In a procedure for assuring the identification of samples when transferring samples into a sample support (1) of an analysis apparatus, a sample container is insertable into the sample support at one desired location only. The computer of the analysis apparatus has stored the address of each sample in its memory and moves the sample support (1) to make the appropriate location accessible through the aperture (4) in cover 6. When this takes place in the order in which the samples were presented, all confusion of samples will be avoided. The sample locations (2) may be in a series of nested rings, when the cover (6) has only one aperture for each ring. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Procedure for assuring the identification of samples and a sample register for its application The present invention concerns a procedure for assuring the identification of samples when samples aretransferred into a sample registerfora measuring process in an apparatus performing analysis.
A general principle when samples are analyzed is thatthe samples to by analyzed in succession are placed in a sample cup holder or equivalent sample disk, where the cups can be disposed in any position.
This isaccomplished manually, and the handling of samplesrnquirnsgrnat precision and systematicwork from the person making the analysis, forthe sample cup not to be placed in a wrong position on the sample disk.
The risk of confusion increases with the number of samples and wFth the operator's lack of training.
The object ofthe present invention is to eliminate the risk of laboratory samples being mixed when they are processed in a laboratory analyzer.
In order to achieve the effect mentioned, the procedure ofthe invention is mainly characterized in that the desired sample register location and an aperture in the coverofthesample register are placed in alignment, whereafter the sample container is inserted in the sample registerthrough this aperture.
An advantageous embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the correct aperture in the cover where one sample at a time can be placed is indicated byte aid of a lamp.
An advantageous embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the computer ofthe apparatus carrying out the analysis points out, if necessary, the locations of the samples to be presented in desired order, by moving the sample register underthe cover to the desired location, for instance by the aid of an electromotor, and retains in its memory the address of the location of each presented sample subsequent to the presentation andthe placing ofthe sample container.
The apparatus implementing the procedure ofthe invention, comprising a sample register in which the sample register sites are located at predetermined locationsand in which the sample containers to be examined are placed, is characterised in that overthe sample registerthere is a cover provided with apertures so positioned that only one aperture at a time allows a sample containerto be inserted in the sample register.
An advantageous embodiment of the invention is furthermore characterized in that the sample register sites are located on nested, concentric circles and that the cover overthe sample register has only one aperture for each sample register circle.
The invention is described in the following bythe aid of an example, reference being made to the drawings attached, wherein :- fig. 1 presents the sample register in oblique top view, and Fig. 2 presents the sample registerin elevational viewand sectioned.
In the sample register 1 are placed the sample containers 5 in such mannerthat the computer of the apparatus controls the sample register 1 and the lamps 3 on its cover, so that only one sample container 5 ata time is insertable in the sample register 1 through an aperture in the cover. The sample contain- er5 is provided with a collar and it goes through the aperture 4 in the cover 6 but remains suspended from its collar in the sample register. The address of any given sample container 5 in the sample register 1 is kept in the memory ofthecomputer, and the computer directs the desired cup position, that is the sample register position 2, into alignment with the aperture in the cover so that the sample container can be placed in the sample register. In this manner, the sample register can be loaded full of patient sample cups in locations determined by the computer individually, without any sample being wrongly placed; the sample identification will be preserved with certainty.
It is obvious to a person skilled in the artthatthe invention is not exclusively confined to the example present in theforegoing and that it may instead be used within the scope ofthe claims to be presented below in any handling of sets of sample containers where the preservation of identification is uncertain otherwise, yet of paramount importance. For instance, the sample register must not necessarily be diskshaped with the sample registers located on nested rings; in contrast, the sample registers may be located for instance in straight rows. Equally, the apparatus can be so constructed that the sample register does not move but the cover with its apertures is movable.
