Abstract

The butt is an assembly consisting of a pistol grip and a butt, the front end of the butt fitting releasably into the rear end of the pistol grip. These together form a unit intended to replace a conventional rigid stock. With the butt removed the weapon can be used more conveniently in confined spaces and when it becomes necessary to fire aimed shots at longer range the butt can be quickly fitted, enabling the weapon to be fired from the shoulder, with the butt in either a normal (Fig. 5, not shown) or inverted (Fig. 4, not shown) position, to suit the kind of shooting and the preference of the shooter.

Description

SPECIFICATION Quick release, two position, removable butt for firearms This device is intended to provide a simple means whereby a firearm may be fitted with an easily removable butt or shoulder stock. A convenient means of achieving this end would be to replace a normal full length shoulder stock with a pistol grip and to fit to the pistol grip the removable butt here described. Combined pistol grip/butt assemblies for firearms are generally constructed either in one rigid piece or made to hinge, so that when released, the butt can fold forward along the side or top of the weapon.
The essentials of the quick release mechanism lie in the spring mounted studs or buttons which are situated inside the butt's tubular end. These protrude through the sides of the front end of the butt to engage in appropriate holes in the wall of the socket into which the end of the butt is placed, thus locking the butt or stock to the back of the weapon. These locking studs can be quickly released by placing forefinger and thumb in recesses at the outer end of the holes which receive the studs, depressing the studs against their spring so that they clear the holes in the receiving socket and permit the butt to slide free.
Since the studs and their locating holes are symetrically placed, the butt may be fitted in either of two positions -- in the "normal" position or rotated through 1800, in the "inverted" position.
To permit a firearm fitted with a shoulder stock to be used in confined spaces, probably at short range, it will be found to be advantageous to remove the butt and to replace it with a pistol grip - effectively shortening the weapon by 200 mm to 300 mm. If it however becomes necessary to fire aimed shots over greater distances then a butt or stock becomes desirable, enabling the weapon to be fired from the shoulder. A folding butt serves in this situation but has the disadvantage of representing unnecessary weight when not required and also makes the weapon unnecessarily bulky.Having no hinge and lock mechanism, the simple quick release removable butt described here represents a minimum of extra weight when in use, with the possibility of its being quickly assembled in either the "normal" or "inverted" position to suit the kind of shooting and the preference of the shooter. When it is removed, quickly and easily because of the spring button mechanism, it leaves the shortened weapon completely unencumbered.
1. A quick release, two position, removable butt for firearms comprising a pistol grip, into a socket in the back of which a removable butt is fitted.
This assembly replaces a rigid stock.
2. A quick release, two position, removable butt for firearms as claimed in claim 1 wherein the removable butt is provided with features intended to lock the butt into the stocket in the rear of the pistol grip.
3. A quick release, two position, removable butt for firearms as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein finger recesses in the outside of the pistol grip permit the user to disconnect the locking mechanism, permitting the removable butt to be removed.
