Abstract

The controller comprises an adjustable stop 2 and actuating cylinder 5, arranged to disengage from the power regulator (1) when switch 13 is closed to allow compressed air to be supplied via servo valve 10 to piston 7, switch 13 operates in dependence on at least one predetermined gearbox speed stage. On opening switch 13 the compressed air is vented and stop is engaged with the regulator (1) to reduce the range of regulation. Should power supply fail, or regulator fail to vent when switch 13 opens, warning means (16, 17) is operative since relay 14 closes switch 15. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A controller for limiting the speed of an internal combustion engine of á motor vehicle The invention relates to a controller for limiting the speed of an internal combustion engine of motor vehicle comprising a stop which reduces the range of movement of a power output regulator and which can be actuated by a reguating force, said stop being movable by an operating force into a position for reducing the range of movement of the power output regulator by the spring force of a compression spring of an adjusting device in the event of the failure of the operating force.
German Offenlegungsschrift 28 1 9 627 has disclosed a regulator for limiting the speed or for controlling the volume or flow to the fuel injection pump of a diesel engine in which a stop, which reduces the pivoting range of a regulator lever, for example when a specific gear stage is engaged, can be moved by an electromagnet. In the event of the current conduction to the electromagnet being inadvertently interrupted, the stop in this regulator cannot be adjusted or moved into the position for reducing the pivotal range of the regulator lever even when the specific gear stage is engaged.
The object of the invention is to provide a controller for limiting the speed of an internal combustion engine in which the exceeding of a specific speed is reliably prevented when a predetermined gear stage is engaged.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a controller for limiting the speed of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, comprising a stop which reduces the range of movement of a power output regulator and which can be actuated by a regulating force, said stop being movable by an operating force into a position for reducing the range of movement of the power output regulator by the spring force of a compression spring of an adjusting device in the event of the failure of the operating force, wherein the development movement of the stop is dependent on at least one predetermined gear stage, the operating force is compressed air and the adjusting device comprises a cylinder in which is guided a piston which, on one side, is supplied with compressed air through feed lines and, on the other side, is subjected to the spring force of the compression spring, and an electromagnetically operated servo valve having an air bleed and a return spring is arranged in the feed lines, the compressed air supply to the adjusting device being controllable by the said servo valve, the servo valve being rendered currentless by an electric switch which is opened upon the engagement of the or each predetermined gear stage and venting the adjusting device.
According to one aspect of the invention, an electromagnetic relay and relay contact are provided, the relay being deprived of current and the relay contact closed, when the electric switch is open, the relay cooperating with a warning device.
In a further aspect of this invention the adjusting device cooperates with a regulating stop by means of which the travel of the stop cooperating with the piston of the adjusting device is limited, by the force of the compression spring, to an immediate speed position when the regulating device is vented, this position being determined by the regulating stop. Preferably the regulating stop is adjustable and is arranged on the power output regulator. According to another aspect of the invention, the warning device may be associated with an electrical switch which is operated, against the compression spring, by the stop when an intermediate speed setting is exceeded.
In a controller constructed in accordance with the invention, for limiting the speed of an internal combustion engine, the speed is limited by virtue of adjustment of the stop caused by spring force even in the event of failure of the regulating or operating force, which in this case is compressed air. Moreover, with this controller it is to be considered a particular advantage that the stop is brought into the intermediate speed limiting position even in the event of the current supply to the servo valve being inadvertently interrupted.
An intermediate speed position of the stop, which can be adapted for individual gearbox designs, can be selected by the regulating stop. Moreover, movement of the power output regulator beyond the intermediate speed position, for example as a result of the excess spring force of the compression spring of the adjusting device, is immediately indicated by the warning device when the servo valve is currentless.
The drawing shows, in diagrammatic form, an embodiment of the invention, in a position in which the servo valve and the relay are currentless.
A power output regulator, which is designated by reference numeral 1 and which can be actuated at random, and a stop 2 are nonrotatably connected to one another and arranged so as to be capable of pivoting about an axis 3. When in the position 1 a and 2a shown in solid lines, the stop 2 and power output regulator 1 are in the selected intermediate speed position of the internal combustion engine. The full-load position of the internal combustion engine is represented by the position 2b shown in broken lines, of the stop 2 and by the position 1 b, also shown in broken lines, of the power output regulator 1, the idle or no-load position of the internal combustion engine being indicated by the position 2c, shown in dot-dash lines, of the stop 2 and by the position 1 c, shown in dotdash lines, of the power output regulator 1.
The position of the power output regulator 1 relative to the stop 2 can be influenced by an adjustable regulating stop 4 which is formed by a set screw or regulating screw arranged on the power output regulator 1. The stop 2 cooperates with an adjusting device 5 comprising a cylinder 6 in which is guided a piston 7 which, on one side, is supplied with compressed air through feed lines 8, 8a and, on the other side, is subjected to the spring force of a compression spring 9. An electromagnetically operated 3/2-way servo valve 10 having an air bleed 11 and a return spring 1 2 is arranged in the feed lines 8, 8a, the compressed air supply to the adjusting device 5 being controllable by the servo valve. An electric switch which can be operated depending on a predetermined gear stage being selected is designated by reference numeral 13, a relay by reference numeral 14, a relay contact which cooperates with the relay 14 by reference numeral 15, a warning device, which is formed for example by a warning light, by reference numeral 1 6 and a further electric switch by reference numeral 1 7.
When the internal combustion engine is running with engaged gear stages at which the upper permitted or limiting speed of the vehicle cannot be exceeded, the switch 1 3 is closed and the 3/2-way servo valve 10 and the relay 14 are energized so that the relay contact 1 5 is opened and the adjusting device 5 is supplied with compressed air through the feed lines 8a and 8. In this case the piston 7 is displaced to the left, relative to the position shown in the drawing, to such an extent that the power output regulator 1 and the stop 2 can be pivoted into the full-load positions 1 b and 2b, respectively. Then the switch 1 7 can be closed without the warning device 16 being actuated.Upon the engagement of a gear stage in which the upper permitted or limiting speed of the vehicle could be exceeded, the switch 1 3 is opened and the 3/2way servo valve 10 and the relay 14 are rendered currentless so that the relay contact 1 5 and the 3/2-way servo valve 10 occupy the position shown in the drawing. Air is vented from the adjusting device 5 through the feed line 8 and the air bleed 11. The piston 7 is displaced by the spring force of the compression spring 9 into the position shown, and the stop 2 and thus the power output regulator 1 cannot be pivoted in the full-load direction beyond the intermediate speed positions 2a and 1 a, respectively. In the event of excess spring force being applied by the compression spring 9 or, for example, in the event of a defect in the adjusting device 5, the switch 1 7 is closed by the stop 2 and the warning device is switched on.
When using the controller according to the invention in vehicles having a gearbox design in which the upper limiting speed can be exceeded in several gear stages, each of these gear stages is to be associated with an electric switch corresponding to the switch 1 3.
