Abstract

213,590. Bechhotd, H., Gutlohn, L., and Karplus, H. March 29, 1923, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Emulsions; making.-Substances are emulsified' by dissolving them, together with an aliphatic or sulphonated aliphatic acid of high molecular weight, such as oelic acid, stearic acid, or sulphonated ricinoleic acid, in an auxiliary solvent, for example tetrahydronaphthalene, liquid paraffin, or oil of turpentine, and mixing the solution with a solution of an alkali or alkaline salt in proportion less than that equivalent to the acid. Examples of alkalis and alkaline salts are caustic alkalis, alkali carbonates, ammonia and alkali borates. In examples paraffin wax and oleic acid are dissolved in paraffin oil and mixed with soda-lye; thymol and naphthalene are emulsified by solution together with oleic acid in turpentine oil and admixture with soda-lye; and paraffin wax with sodium oleate and oleic acid ia dissolved in paraffin oil and mixed with water. The emulsions thus produced may be mixed with water and may be used for impregnating wood, fibres, fabrics, paper &c. The emulsions are stable against electrolytes and chlorates may therefore be added to increase the inflammabilay of the material impregnated.
