Description
SPECIFICATION
Cover trim
This invention relates to an elongate cover trim for location along an edge or perimeter of an asphalt or other roof covering of a kind incorporating waterproof membrane such as a felt.
All conventionai aluminium, G.R.P. or P.V.C.
trims for roof coverings incorporating a felt are generally T-shaped, with the main rib of the Tshaped trim inserted horizontally between the felt and its supporting deck, and with the transverse element of the T-shaped trim being provided with inwardly extending ribs, one to engage over the felt, and one to abut the adjacent surface of the supporting deck. However, at each joint between felt and deck that such trims cover, there is a substantial amount of differential expansion and contraction movement, and invariably the trim eventually tears the felt or penetrates the asphalt, and a substantial amount of maintenance is necessary to renew felts/asphalt/trims due to the cracks resulting from differential movement damage.
According to the present invention, there is provided a cover trim for use in covering a joint between an edge or perimeter of a waterproof membrane and a roof edge fillet or other upward projection formed to prevent water flow from the roof edge, the trim comprising a plurality of lower elements or cleats, secured in short discontinuous lengths, by fixings over a generally horizontal surface of a waterproof roofing membrane formed over a roof edge fillet, or other upward projection formed to prevent water flow from the roof edge, and at least one upper element, which is an elongate extrusion secured to the lower elements by a snap-fit tongue and groove arrangement, and which is so profiled that the upper element(s), either alone or in conjunction with an adjacent, contiguous upper element, completely covers the lower element(s), and the fixings and prevents water penetration through such fixings.
Thus, by employing a two-part cover trim in accordance with the invention, the upper element is totally independent of the waterproof membrane e.g. the felt and is free to expand or contract differentially, without damaging the felt and/or any asphalt. Each lower element in fact constitutes a jointing and support clip for the lengths of upper elements, with one lower element located at every joint between adjacent ends of adjacent upper element lengths, and with three lower elements for example supporting an upper element of 3 metre length.
Preferably, each lower element is generally "L"shaped comprising a foot member and an upright member and is inverted when secured to the roof edge fillet. It is also preferred for the upright member of the lower element to be provided with at least one (but preferably two) inwardly directed spacer rib, to space that upright member from the outer face of the roof edge fillet. Preferred materials for the lower elements are semi-hard rubber or synthetic plastics. The fixings preferably take thg form of nails or screws, and for this purpose each lower element is conveniently provided with a plurality (e.g. two) of longitudinally spaced apart apertures.
With regard to the second element, this is also generally "U"-shaped comprising a base member and an upright member and is inverted when secured to the lower elements. It is preferably provided with a projection, either inwardly or outwardly facing, to prevent rainwater flowing or dripping to the face of the wall of the building involved, at the lower edge of the vertical face below the roof edge fillet. It is also designed to provide a suitable aesthetic appearance to the building elevation. A number of different designs of upper element may be used, all of which can be secured to a standard lower element by a common snap-fit tongue and groove arrangement. For instance, the second element may be provided with a U-shaped, inwardly turned, terminal edge on its upright member adapted to embrace the terminal edge of the upright member of the first element, while it is also preferred to provide on its base member an integral, angled flange carrying an inwardly directed spacer rib adapted to engage the felt. The second element may be self-coloured or receive a colour finish by means of anodising or factory paint finish. Preferred materials for the upper elements are aluminium, polyvinyl chloride, hard rubber or glass-reinforced polyester. In detail, each second element may be extruded in black, grey or white P.V.C. with a serrated front face of it upright member.
Normally the roof edge fillet is eievated with respect to the remainder of the roof, but in order to make the cover trim, and in particular the second element thereof adaptable for use with parapet walls etc., the angled flange may be provided with a pair of longitudinally extending ribs, whereby a portion of the angled flange may be snapped off, at the ribs.
The invention will now be described, in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a sectional view through an edge of a roof provided with a covered trim in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the first element or cleat of the covered trim of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the second element of the covered trim of Figure 1.
In the drawings, a roof 1 of a building is provided with a roof covering comprising a waterproof membrane in the form of a felt 2 and chippings 3, the perimeter of the roof being defined by an elevated roof edge fillet 4, from which depends a facia board 5. A first edge portion 6 of the felt 2 passes up an inclined inner face 7 of the fillet 4, while a second edge portion 8 seats on a generally horizontal upper face 9 of the fillet 4, stopping short of an outer face 10 of the fillet 4.
The roof 1 is provided with a cover trim comprising a plurality of lower elements or cleats 11 in combination with upper elements 12.
Each lower element 11 is generally of "L"section, comprising a foot member 1 3 and an upright member 14, and is secured in an inverted manner by fixings such as screws 1 5 passing through holes 1 6 in the foot member 13 and into the fillet 4, so that the felt portion 9 is trapped between the foot member 13 and the upper face 9 of the fillet 4. The upright member 14 is provided with 2 ribs 1 7, spaced apart from one another and inwardly projecting, so as to be capable of spacing the lower element 11 with respect to the fillet 4.
The foot member 13 is provided with a pair of outwardly directed, closely spaced ribs 18, together defining a generally dove shaped channel
19 which constitutes one half of an elongate, snap-fit, tongue and groove arrangement.
Each upper element 12 is generally "U"shaped, so as to be capable of shrouding lower elements 11, and comprises a foot portion 20 and an upright portion 21, with the foot portion 20, remote from the upright portion 21 provided with a flange 22 inclined at the same angle as the face 7 of the fillet 4. The foot portion 20 is provided with an inwardly directed, elongate rib 23 forming the other half of the snap-fit, tongue and grooved arrangement, by being receivable in the channel 19, so that the upper element 12 may be secured to lower elements 11 and hence secured to the building. The upright member 21 of each upper element 12 is provided with a "U"-shaped, inwardly turned, terminal edge 24, adapted to embrace terminal edge 25 of the upright component of the cleat. The incline flange 22 is provided with an inwardly directed spacer rib 26 adapted to engage the portion 6 of the felt.
The lower elements 11 are produced in short lengths, as indicated in Figure 2, while the second elements are produced in relatively long lengths e.g. 3 metre, as indicated in Figure 3. In use lower elements 11 are attached to the fillet 4 at locations where it is required either to provide joints between adjacent ends of adjacent upper elements, or where it is required to support upper elements.
