Description
SPECIFICATION
Frame construction and installation
This invention relates to door or window frames and in particular to metal frames for doors or windows.
Conventionally door or window frames are constructed of wood, although metal frames have been known for many years. However, for various reasons, such as cost and availability of wellseasoned timber, for appearance or durability, resistance to shrinkage or warping, metal frames are sometimes preferred.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a door or window frame of simple but effective and inexpensive construction which is easily installed.
The invention provides a frame for a door or window, said frame comprising a plurality of members disposed in relative juxtaposition to define an opening for a door or window, each member comprising an elongate first channel having a base wall and opposed side walls, said base wall having a step therein extending lengthwise of said member to provide in use a rebate against which a door or window may abut.
Preferably said first channel is open outwardly of said opening and said side walls may be substantially parallel with each other.
Each side wall may be lipped and the lips of said opposed side walls may extend towards each other and at least a part thereof may extend substantially parallel with at least a part of said base wall. Said substantially parallel parts of said lips and said base wall may extend substantially perpendicular to said opposed side walls.
Each lip may have a step therein extending lengthwise of said member adjacent the free edge of said lip, whereby the steps of the lips of the opposed side members together provide a second channel formation to receive a wall structure.
At least one of said frame members may have one or a plurality of hinges secured thereto and at least one of said frame members may have an aperture therein to receive a bolt catch or lock.
Said frame members may be secured to each other at mutual abutment locations, and may be welded to each other at such locations.
Said frame may also include means for securing said members to a wall structure, said securing means comprising an anchor lug adapted to be received in said first channel. The anchor lug may be of channel-shaped cross section of length substantially equal to the width of said first channel and of width less than said length. Preferably the width of said anchor lug is less than the distance between the free edges of said lips of a frame member. The anchor lug may comprise a base and two opposed side walls, each side wall having adjacent each end of said anchor lug a recess adapted to receive a lip of a frame member.
The invention will now be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:~
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a door frame,
Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of alternative embodiments of frame member,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an anchor lug, and
Figs. 5.1 to 5.4 show the steps of installing the anchor lug of Fig. 4 in a frame member of Fig. 2.
Referring now to Fig. 1 there is shown a door frame 10 comprising a head frame member 11 and jamb frame members 12 disposed in relative juxtaposition to define an opening 13 for a door (not shown). The frame members 11, 12 are secured to each other at their mutual abutment locations 14 as by welding, each member being of rolled section and of for example 1.6mm thick mild steel.
Each member 11, 12 is of channel shaped cross-section, the channel 1 5 opening away from the door opening 13 and the base wall 16 of each channel has a step 17 therein to provide a rebate to which the door can abut in use.
One of the jamb frame members 12 has secured thereto, for example by means of rivets, screws or welding, hinges 18 and/or 19 as required, by means of which the door may be hung. The opposed jamb 12 has an aperture 20 therein at which a catch plate or a lock may be secured, the former to receive a bolt or lock catch as desired.
Two embodiments of frame member 11, 12 are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In the Fig. 2 embodiment the member 11, 12 is of channelshaped cross-section having a base wall 16 and two substantially parallely disposed opposed side walls 21, the base wall 16 being stepped at 17 as referred to above. Each sidewall 21 has a lip 22 and each lip 22 has a step 23 therein extending
longitudinally of the member 11, 12. The steps 23 and opposed free edges 24 of the lips 22
provide a second channel-shaped formation as
indicated by the dashed line in Fig. 2 for receiving
a wall structure (not shown).
The embodiment of Fig. 3 is similar to that of
Fig. 2 and corresponding parts are numbered in like manner. However, in the Fig. 3 embodiment the base wall 16 has two steps 17 therein.
Typical dimensions of the Fig. 2 embodiment are, width of section 100mm, maximum depth of section 50mm, width and depth of second channel 70 and 8mm respectively, width of sidewall 35mm, height of step 15mum.
Corresponding typical dimensions of the Fig. 3 embodiment are 140mm, 60mm, 1 1 Omm, 8mm, 40mm and 20mm respectively. The cross-section of the Fig. 3 embodiment is seen as being appropriate for the larger frame member, whereby the two steps 1 7 provide increased rigidity for a larger section and also enable a door to be hung on either side of a door frame 10 as desired. The sidewalls 21 give rigidity to the frame member 11, 12 and also serve as the reveals of the door frame 10, giving a pleasing appearance to the frame.
Referring now to Fig. 4, there is shown an anchor lug 26 by means of which a frame
member 11, 12 may be conveniently secured to a
wall structure. The anchor lug 26 is of channel
shaped cross-section and is of a length
substantially equal to the internal width of the
channel 1 5 of the frame member 11, 12, with
which it is to be used. The sidewalls 27 of anchor
lug 26 do not extend the full length of the anchor
lug 26, the base wall 28 of the anchor lug 26
being rounded at each end where it protrudes
beyond the side walls 27.Adjacent each end of
each sidewall 27 is a recess 29, 30 to receive a
lip 22, 23, 24 of a frame member 11, 12. The
width of the anchor lug 26 is less than the
distance between the opposed free edges 24 of the frame member 11, 12 with which it is to be
used.
The anchor lug 26 is installed in a frame
member 11, 12 as shown in Fig. 5. The anchor
lug 26 is placed in channel 15 with its base wall
28 towards the base wall 16 of member 11, 12 and with the lengthwise axis of the anchor lug at
an acute angle of the lengthwise axis of the
member 11, 12 as in Fig. 5.1.The anchor lug 26
is then rotated so that the steps 23 and free
edges 24 of the member 11, 12 are received in
recesses 29 as in Fig. 5.2. Further rotation of anchor lug 26 as in Fig. 5.3 enables the free edges 24 to engage in recesses 30 until the longitudinal axis of anchor lug 26 is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the frame member 11, 12 as in Fig. 5.4. The anchor lug 26 may be readily released and moved longitudinally of the member 11, 12 to any desired location and then resecured.
The frame member 11, 12 may be secured to a wall structure by means of a plurality of such anchor lugs 26 disposed in spaced relationship along the length of the frame member. Such anchor lugs may be secured to the wall structure by means of screws or, in the case of a wall structure comprising a metal frame structure, by welding, riveting or the like.
In this way installation of a door frame 10 in a
building may be performed quickly and simply, thereby incurring the minimum costs in
manpower and materials.
