Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for tilting and locking the driver's cab of lorries and like vehicles The invention relates to an apparatus for tilting and locking the driver's cab of lorries and like vehicles.
Such an apparatus is known from (DE-PS 22 24 383) and has proved successful. A detent means is actuated to unlock the mechanical locking device by exerting a pressure on the piston of the hydraulic cylinder. Thus accidental damage to the vehicle cab will not occur if unlocking is accidentally omitted before actuating the tilting cylinder.
The pump is generally accessible from the outside of the motor vehicle and can be actuated mechanically which is highly undesirable. In consequence, the hydraulic cylinder can be unlocked and the driver's cab tilted so-that the engine and all units are freely accessible and can be stolen. On the other hand, it is inappropriate to mount the pump under the tilting driver's cab because extra hydraulic lines have to be laid to the pump and from there to the hydraulic cylinder, in any case by a round-about route.
The inventions seeks to develop an apparatus for tilting and locking the driver's cab of lorries and like vehicles, without alteration of the mounting site of the pump, such that the driver's cab cannot be tilted without authority.
According to the invention, there is provided an apparatus for tilting and locking the driver's cab of lorries and like vehicles, comprising a tilting cylinder for tilting the cab and hydraulically actuated locking means for locking the cab against movement wherein a short circuit valve, having its operating control located in the cab, is provided between the feed and return lines of the hydraulic equipment.
Preferably the hydraulic tilting cylinder is driven by a pump via a distributing slide valve, and a feed line together with at least one non-return valve which can be unlocked hydraulically, the locking means comprises a hydraulic cylinder which is acted upon by the pressure oil to release the lock and by a closing spring to engage the lock, the piston of the hydraulic cylinder moving the locking member of the locking means, and the hydraulic cylinder and the piston locking means comprising a distributing slide valve with two control apertures situated one behind the other, one of which is connected to the feed line through a nonreturn valve and the other is connected directly to the feed line, the latter control aperture only being freed when the locking means is released.
Preferably the operating control is a manual lever. This arrangement ensures that there can be no pressure increase in the operating lines.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example with reference to the drawing, the single figure of which shows one embodiment of the invention.
The hydraulic tilting cylinder 1 comprises a double action piston 2, the piston rod 3 of which is articulated, via an eye 4, on a tiltable driver's cab (not shown). The tilting cylinder 1 itself is mounted at its other end for pivoting on the vehicle. The cylinder chamber 5 situated at one side of the piston 2 is connected, via a feed line 6, a load-holding valve 7, a shut-off valve 8 and a distributing slide valve 9, to a pump 1 which is provided with a pressure valve 10 and which can draw an hydraulic fluid, such as oil or the like, out of a tank 12. In addition, a pressure-limiting valve 13 is associated with the pump 11. The other cylinder chamber 14 of the hydraulic cylinder 1 is in communication, via a line 15, with a distributing slide valve 9, and when this is in an appropriate position, oil can be conveyed via the line 1 5 into the tank 12.The line 1 5 is in communication with the load-holding valve 7 in such a matter that, when a pressure is present in the line 15, this load-holding valve 7 is unlocked, and it opens so that the hydraulic fluid can flow back out of the cylinder chamber 5, via the feed line 6 and the valve 7, as well as the distributing slide valve 9, into the tank 12.
The end of the hydraulic cylinder 1 remote from the driver's cab or the piston rod 3 comprises an axial bore 1 6 and provided on the side of the piston 2 remote from the piston rod 3 is a cylindrical pin 1 8 which can be inserted in the bore 16, and, during the insertion, controls the mechanical unlocking of a non-return valve 1 7 blocking the return of the oil from the cylinder compartment 5. If, during the lowering of the driver's cab, the pin 1 8 penetrates into the axial bore 16, then it comes into contact with a powertransmitting member 19, and displaces this as a result of which the non-return valve 1 7 is unlocked. The oil to be displaced in the cylinder compartment 5 passes via part of the feed line 6, a line 20, the non-return valve 1 7 and the distributing slide valve 9 into the tank 1 2.
If the driver's cab is to be tilted, then the distributing slide valve 9 is displaced out of its position illustrated towards the left so that, after actuation of the pump 1 for example by means of a hand lever, the pressure valve 10 opens and oil enters the cylinder compartment 5 of the tilting cylinder 1 via a line 6. The oil displaced from the interior chamber 14 as a result, enters the line 1 5 via a throttle 21 and then flows to the tank 12. As a result of the arrangement of the throttle 21, the speed of the piston 2 is influenced when it has tilted the driver's cab beyond the dead centre position and the driver's cab then tries to move the piston 2 in the direction of the arrow 35 on its own accord. If the driver's cab is to be swung back out of its tilted position or an intermediate position, then the distributing slide valve 9 should be moved back into the position illustrated and the pump 11 actuated again. The hydraulic fluid under pressure then enters the chamber 14 via the line 1 5 and tries to move the piston 2 downwards. So long as pressure is present in the line 15, the loadholding valve 7 is open and the hydraulic fluid present in the cylinder compartment 5 can therefore by conveyed back to the tank 1 2 via this valve 7 and the distributing slide valve 9. If the pumping operation is interrupted, then the loadholding valve 7 closes and the driver's cab remains securely in the corresponding position.
Shortly before the driver's cab has assumed a position corresponding to the travelling position, the pin 1 8 of the piston 2 displaces the member 1 9 so that the non-return valve 1 7 is opened and remains open so long as the piston 2 is in the position corresponding to the travelling position of the driver's cab. It should also be mentioned that a throttle 22 is provided between the shut-off valve 8 and the distributing slide valve 9. This diaphragm 22 influences the speed during the lowering movement of the piston 2.
An hydraulic cylinder 23 is inserted in the feed line 6, which leads from the cylinder chamber 5 to the distributing slide valve 9. In the cylinder 23, an arresting means 24 for a mechanical locking device 25 is guided for limited displacement. In the embodiment illustrated, this arresting means 24 is subject to the action of a spring 26. The arresting means may, however, also be influenced hydraulically. The movement of the arresting means 24 in the direction of action of the spring 26 is limited by a stroke limiting means, here a sleeve 27. If only the spring 26 acts on the arresting means 24, then this engages the abutment 28 of the mechanical locking device.
The inner chamber 29 of the hydraulic cylinder 23 is in direct communication with the distributing slide valve 9 through the feed line 6. In addition, however, this inner chamber 29 is also in communication with the feed line 6, leading to the tilting cylinder 1, through the control port 30' or 32', namely in the first instance through a first line 30 in which there is a non-return valve 31 and through an adjacent, second line 32 which, when only the spring 26 is acting on the arresting means 24, if closed by this.
If the distributing slide valve 9 is displaced towards the left in the direction of the arrow 33, and if the pump 11 is actuated, then the hydraulic fluid delivered by the pump 11 displaces the arresting means 24 counter to the direction of the arrow 33 and hence counter to the action of the spring 26 because the hydraulic fluid cannot flow into the feed line 6 through the line 30 because of the arrangement of the non-return valve 31 in the line 30. If the arresting means 24 frees the line 32, then the hydraulic fluid is supplied to the cylinder chamber 5 of the tilting cylinder 1, after which the driver's cab, not illustrated, can be pivoted in the tilting sense.
Further, there is arranged between the supply line 6 and the return line 1 5 a short circuit valve indicated generally by reference 50 and shown in the safety or open position. This valve 50 is operable by a manual lever 51 to its two locked positions. Advantageously, at least the lever 51 is within the cab. In the safety position shown, the cab cannot be tilted, because the short circuit valve 50 ensures that a pressure build up in the cylinder space 29 of the hydraulic cylinder 23 since oil from the pump 11 passes directly back via return line 15 to the tank 12.
