Description

SPECIFICATION Display box apparatus This invention is concerned with apparatus in the form of a display box adapted to receive goods and display the goods when a connected lid is in an open condition.
According to the present invention there is provided a box apparatus comprising an openable container part connected at a base location thereof with a hinged lid having side walls to be closable over and around the container part, the hinged lid being formed with a hinged part which is also connected directly with an upper location on the container part whereby to present a panel extending across the interior of the lid when the latter is in an open condition.
Preferably the hinged part extends between the container part and the interior of the lid, at an upper edge location on the latter remote from the container part.
Preferably also the hinged part comprises a member having at least two sections defined by fold lines parallel to said upper edge, whereby to enable the first and second sections to be movable from a first position when the lid is closed, wherein the first and second sections are in the same plane alongside the inner face of the top of the lid, and a second position when the lid is open, wherein the first section lies alongside the inner face of the respective side wall of the lid and the second section extends substantially between a lower edge of the lid and the container part.
Alternatively, the hinged part comprises a planar member extending between the container part and the interior of the lid, at an upper edge location on the latter remote from the container part.
The upper face of the container part may be so formed as to enable viewing therethrough of the contents of the container part.
The present invention also provides a material blank comprising a plurality of integral sections defined by parallel fold lines whereby certain of the sections are foldable into a container part with means being provided for closing of the ends of the container part, others of the sections being foldable into a lid having side walls to be closable over and around the container part, and further of the sections being foldable to form a panel which, in the erected condition of a box formed by the container part and the lid, extends across the interior of the lid.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a blank according to one embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is one end view of a box erected from the blank of Fig. 1 and in a closed condition; Figure 3 is another end view of the box erected from :he blank of Fig. 1 and in an open condition; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the box erected from the blank of Fig. 1 and in an open condition; and Figure 5 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of a box of the invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, a cardboard blank 10 comprises a plurality of integrally formed sections defined by parallel fold lines. A first section 1 2, of rectangular configuration, has on one edge an integral section 14 formed on its ends with locking tabs 16. The section 14 on the edge thereof remote from the section 1 2 is formed with an integral locking flap 1 8. On the edge opposite the section 14, the section 1 2 is integrally connected with a section 20, which also has end locking flaps 22. The section 1 2 has an integral closure flap 26 on each end, having a slit 26a.The sections 14 and 20 are of considerably less width than the section 1 2 as well as a section 24 which is of the same configuration as the section 1 2 and is integrally formed with the section 20 on the edge thereof remote from the section 1 2. The section 24 has cuts in each end defining tabs 24a.
When this part of the blank is folded about parallel fold lines 28, 30, 32 and 34, the flap 1 8 is turned and glued whereby to form a container or box 36 (Fig. 4), the open ends of which can be closed by folding of the flaps 16, 22 and 26 in a conventional manner, the tabs 24a engaging in the slits 26a.
The section 24 has a further section 38 integrally formed on its free edge and defined by a fold line 40. The section 38 is then integrally connected through a fold line 42 with a section 44 which is of substantially the same configuration as the sections 1 2 and 24. The section 44 is integrally formed on its free side edge with a wall flap 46 defined by a fold line 48, and on each of its ends a wall flap 50. When this part of the blank is folded about the fold lines 42 and 48 the wall flaps 46 and 50 are inwardly folded to form a double-walled lid 52 (Fig. 4) which is closable over and around the box 36.
Integrally connected on the outer side of the wall flap 46 is a further section 54 defined by a fold line 56 and the section 54 connects integrally with a section 58 about a parallel fold line 60. On the free side edge of the section 48 is formed a locking tab 62.
When the blank is folded to form the box 36 and the lid 52, a panel 64 (Fig. 3) is formed by the sections 54 and 58 and extends from the interior of the lid 52 at the upper edge location towards the box 36. On the fold line 30 of the blank a slit 66 is formed to receive the locking tab 62 whereby the panel 64 is effectively hinged on the box 36.
In the open condition of the lid 52 as seen in Fig. 3, the section 54 lies alongside the respective double wall of the lid 52 formed by the flap 46 and the section 58 extends at substantially right angles to the section 54 so as to extend between the lower edge of the lid 52 and the upper edge of the box 36. This presents an area in which additional display information can be provided. The section 12 of the blank 10 which forms the upper face of the box 36 is provided with a window or cutout 68 covered in a transparent material so that the goods to be displayed can be inserted, for example on a moulded display tray, into the box 36 and be viewed through the window 68 when the lid 52 is open.
When the lid 52 is closed over the box 36, the sections 54 and 58 move relative to one another about the fold line 60 until they are in the same plane lying alongside the inner face of the top of the lid 52 with the latter in its closed condition. It will be appreciated that the combined length of the sections 54 and 58 in the direction normal to the fold lines is substantially equal to the corresponding internal dimension of the lid 52.
There is therefore provided a box and lid with an additional display panel formed from a single piece of material and wherein the display information is printed or otherwise provided on one side only of the material.
From every angle, whether the box is open or closed, the printed area of the material is all that is visible except for the very minimum of unprinted area visible through the window.
The display box can therefore be produced simply and inexpensively and also the location of the goods within the box part itself aids security, in that it becomes extremely difficult for an unauthorised person to remove the goods without disturbing the whole box. With the types of apparatus presently available a lid with a display panel has to be secured to such as a moulded tray and there is often little to prevent the goods being removed directly from the tray. Also such an apparatus is rather more difficult and expensive to produce.
In a modification, the fold line 60 may be omitted and the display panel formed of a planar member. In this embodiment when the lid is erected, the double wall formed by the wall flap 46 is secured by gluing such that the display panel always extends between the interior of the lid at the upper edge location and the box 36 whereby to present an angled display panel when the lid 52 is open. In a modification of this embodiment, the display panel may have two intermediate fold lines to present a somewhat arcuate display panel when the lid is open, extending between the interior at the upper edge location and the box 36.
In a further embodiment as shown in Fig.
5, a display box is formed from two cardboard blanks. The first blank substantially corresponds to that part of the first embodiment which forms the container so as to form a container 70 but is not integrally connected with a part for forming the lid, i.e. the sections 38 and 44 of the first embodiment. The first blank in this embodiment is formed with cuts on such fold lines as to define, at corresponding locations on each of the lower edges of the container 70, a slit 72. A lid 74 is formed from the second blank and has, relative to the corresponding part of the blank of Fig. 1, an additional integrally formed section 76 having a locking tab 78 on each edge thereof. To connect the container 70 and the lid 74 together, the section 76 is located through the respective end of the container 70 to lie along the inner face of the base of the latter with the locking tabs 78 engaging in the slits 72. A panel 80 formed on the lid 74 as in the first embodiment is connected to the container 70 in the same manner as in the first embodiment.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the invention. For example, all hinges, locking flaps and slits could be modified from that shown. The box could be produced in various shapes and sizes with or without windows.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing Specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
