Abstract

A heating pad 1 for heating car seats has a resistance wire 2 connectable to a power source 3, 7 by way of a thermostat 5. Stepless temperature adjustment of the pad is achieved by providing separate heating means 8 for the thermostat. The heater 8 and the thermostat 5 are connected such that the thermostat controls the supply of current to said heater 8, and a rheostat 10, 11 adjusts the current through the heater 8 to vary the heat output of the pad heater 2. An LED 14 indicates when the heater 2 is being energised. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for temperature adjustment of an electrical heating unit The present invention relates to apparatus for adjusting the temperature of an electrical heating unit.
The electrical heating unit may have a resistance wire from which heat is derived by supplying electrical power to the wire. Of course, other heat emitting elements through which an electric current flows may be provided. The heat-emitting element is generally connected in series with a thermostat which switches off when its ambient temperature has reached a predetermined temperature. The thermostat is switched on again at a lower predeter mined temperature.
Such an electrical heating unit has the disadvan tage that its temperature is not adjustable. Heating units of this type are often used for heating the seats of vehicles such as cars. In this case the heating unit may be in the form of a pad or it may be built into the seats, in which case units are generally built into both the seat and the backrest. When used in a seat, the element is generally a resistance wire arranged in loops and connected in series with the thermostat.
It is an object of the present invention to provide apparatus for regulating the temperature of an electrical heating unit.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus for stepless temperature adjustment of a heat-emitting electrical unit pro vided with one or more elements arranged to generate heat when a current flows therethrough, said element(s) being coupled to a thermostat and being arranged to be connected to a current source, wherein the thermostat is provided with a separate, steplessly adjustable heating means to which a steplessly controllable voltage is applied, and wherein the thermostat and the heating means are connected to each other such that the thermostat connects and disconnects the heating means.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided an electrical heating unit compris Thg one or more elements arranged to generate heat when a current flows therethrough, the element(s) being arranged to be connected to a current source, and apparatus for regulating the temperature of said heating unit, said apparatus comprising a thermo stat coupled to said element(s) and separate means for heating said thermostat, wherein said thermostat is arranged to control the heating means.
In an embodiment of the invention, the separate heating means for the thermostat comprises a resistance or other wire arranged to emit heat to the thermostat.
Preferably, the heating means for the thermostat is connected to a rheostat arranged to adjust the magnitude of the voltage applied to the heating means.
The heating means for the thermostat is preferably connected in parallel with the heat-emitting unit of the heating means.
An indicator is also connected to the heating means of the thermostat to indicate whether the thermostat is switched on or off.
An embodiment of the present invention will hereinafter be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the sole Figure shows a heating pad and the electrical circuit associated therewith.
The Figure shows a heating pad 1 which may be either loose or built in a seat. The heating pad 1 comprises an electrical resistance wire 2 designed to emit heat when a current is passed through it. One end of the resistance wire 2 is connected to the negative terminal 3 of a voltage source and the other end of the wire 2 is connected to one contact 4 of a thermostat 5. The other contact 6 of the thermostat 5 is connected to the positive terminal 7 of the voltage source. The thermostat 5 is designed to switch off at a certain predetermined temperature and to switch on at a second, lower temperature, which is also predetermined. For example, the switch off tempera- ture could be 37"C, and the switch on temperature 30"C. Afurther resistance wire 8 is connected to one contact 4 of the thermostat 5 and is arranged to heat the thermostat. This resistance wire 8 may, fZr example, be wound around the thermostat or it may be arranged in any other manner such that it emits heat to the thermostat. The other end of the further resistance wire 8 is connected to a connection point 9 which is in communication with a movable sliding contact 10 of a rheostat 11. The rheostat 11 is connected in series with a resistor 12 which is in turn connected to an earth connection 13. The connection point 9 is also connected to an indicator 14, for example, in the form of a light-emitting diode. The indicator 14 is also connected to an earth-connection 15.
The heating pad described above functions as follows: Assume, for example, that the thermostat switches off at 37"C and switches on at 30 C.
However, if the thermostat 5 has not been in operation it will start operating when the heating pad 1 is connected to the voltage source 3, 7 and the thermostat will be heated by the surroundings and by the heat generated by the current flowing through the thermostat. Heat is also supplied to the thermostat through the resistance wire 8 and the magnitude of this heat is dependent on the setting of the rheostat 10, 11. Furthermore, when the thermostat is switched on, current is also supplied to the lightemitting diode 14, indicating to the user of the heating pad that the thermostat is switched on. If high current is supplied to the resistance wire 8 the thermostat will reach the switch off temperature of 37"C very quickly. However, if the current is low, it will take longer to reach 37"C. When the predetermined temperature of 37"C is reached, the circuits for the resistance wire 2 and for the resistance wire 8 will be disconnected and the thermostat is only switched on again when it senses a temperature below 30"C. If the current through the resistance wire 8 is high, a low, substantially constant temperature will be obtained in the heating pad and if the currrent passing through the resistance wire is low, a temperature will be obtained on the heating pad which is higher than the temperature level prevailing at high current. Thus, by adjusting the rheostat 10, 11, between these two extreme values for the current passing through the resistance wire, the desired temperature between these two temperature values and the rheostat can be graduated with different temperatures.
The present invention thus enables a heating pad to be regulated to the desired constant temperature values by the simple expedient of providing a thermostat with a separate heating means in which the degree of heat can be regulated electrically in stepless manner.
