Abstract

There is disclosed a unit to be worn beneath a motorcycle helmet and which forms a passage for air from the wearer's nose and mouth to a position outside the helmet thus preventing condensation of breath on the visor of the helmet. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Accessory for motorcycle helmet This invention concerns an accessory for use with a motorcyclist's helmet of the kind (hereinafter termed 'of the kind referred to') incorporating a transparent visor arranged to cover the face when the helmet is in use.
A common problem with motorcyclist's helmets of the kind referred to is loss of visibility resulting from condensation of moisture from the wearer's exhaled breath on the inner surface of the visor.
A motorcyclist's helmet of the kind referred to is known which incorporates a sewn-in or otherwise secured flap intended to bridge the wearers nose and direct breath downwardly to the exterior of the helmet. Such special helmet is, of course, quite costly.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an inexpensive accessory for use with any chosen motorcyclist's helmet of the kind referred to and which prevents condensation of breath on the visor as aforesaid.
According to the present invention there is provided an accessory for use with a motorcyclist's helmet of the kind referred to comprising a unit adapted to be positioned, once the helmet is in place, to cover the nose and mouth of the wearer and form a substantially vertical passage for inhaled and exhaled air extending from the nose and mouth of the wearer to terminate at a position at or below the lower extremity of the helmet.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example only, a perspective view of one form of accessory embodying the invention.
Referring now to the drawing it will be seen that the accessory comprises a unit 10 moulded from a synthetic plastics material such as polypropylene for example. The material should have some degree of resilience but should also offer substantial resistance to deformation.
The unit 10 generally has the shape of a half cylindrical shell 11 closed at one end by a half dome 12 and is adapted to fit over the nose and mouth of a wearer with the half dome 1 2 fitted over the bridge of the nose to extend downwardly with the open lower end 13 somewhat below the level of the chin.
The unit is so positioned after the wearer has donned a motorcyclist's helmet of the kind referred and is held in place by the lower portion of the helmet which engages the half shell 11 above the open end 13 which is located below the lower extremity of the helmet.
The unit forms a passage for inhaled and exhaled air extending from the nose and mouth of the wearer extending to a position outside of the helmet thus preventing any condensation of breath on the inner surface of the visor of the helmet.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
Thus the face engaging rim of the unit may carry a bead of soft material such as of polyurethane foam for example to improve the seal between such rim and the face of the wearer and increase the comfort of wearing the unit.
When such bead is provided, the unit itself may be of rigid material.
1. An accessory for use with a motorcyclist's helmet of the kind referred to comprising a unit adapted to be positioned, once the helmet is in place, to cover the nose and mouth of the wearer and form a substantially vertical passage for inhaled and exhaled air extending from the nose and mouth of the wearer to terminate at a position at or below the lower extremity of the helmet.
2. An accessory according to claim 1 , wherein the unit has the general shape of a half cylindrical shell closed at one end by a half dome adapted to fit over the bridge of the nose.
3. An accessory according to either claim 1 or claim 2, formed from a resilient synthetic plastics material.
4. An accessory according to any preceding claim, having bead of soft material around its face engaging rim.
5. An accessory according to claim 4, wherein said bead is of polyurethane foam.
