Abstract
A wall or floor panel 10 is formed of a base board 11 having a number of discrete sides, and facia members 12 on one major face located within the confines of the base board area. Self aligning means are provided in the form of retractable dowel pins 16 extending laterally from some sides of the base board and correspondingly spaced recesses (17, Fig. 2) in the other sides of the base board. The facia members 12 may be tiles, or slices of brick or stone. Each pin 16 is located in a casing (20, Fig. 3) which is inserted into a prepared hole in the side of the panel base board. Each casing 20 has a longitudinal slot (22, Fig. 3) and each dowel pin 16 has an outstanding projection or stud 21 for location in the slot. A corresponding slot (23, Fig. 4) is provided in the major face of the base board 11 at a location between facia members 12 to allow movement of the dowel pin 16 longitudinally in the casing. A panel for use as a floor panel includes an underlay (15, Fig. 2) secured to the underside of the base board. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Wall or floor panels
This invention relates to wall or floor panels.
A difficulty experienced in laying tiles on a floor or wall is obtaining proper alignment. Further, floor tiles cannot readily be laid on a rough or uneven surface.
An object of this invention is to obviate or mitigate the aforesaid disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a wall or floor panel comprising a base board having a number of discrete sides and facia members on one major face located within the confines of the base board area, and self aligning means comprising retractable dowel pin members extending laterally from some sides of the base board and correspondingly spaced recesses in the other sides of the base board. The facia members may be tiles, or slices of brick or stone.
Preferably, each pin is located in a casing which is inserted into a prepared hole in the side of the panel base board.
Preferably also, each casing has a longitudinal slot, each dowel pin has an outstanding projection for location in the slot and a corresponding slot is provided in the major face of the base board at a location between facia members to allow movement of the dowel longitudinally in the casing.
Preferably, a panel for use as a floor panel includes an underlay secured to the other major face.

A panel 10 for decorating walls or floors comprises a base board 11 which is for example square and has facia members 12 such as tiles covering one major face, e.g. 5 rows each of 5 tiles, with a regular spacing 13 between the tiles for grouting.
The dimensions of the base board are slightly greater than the dimensions of the grouped tiles which are arranged within the confines of the base board to leave a marginal clearance along the sides of the base board equal to half the regular spacing between the tiles of the panel.
Thus, when two panels are positioned on the floor or wall their base boards abut and the space between the adjacent tiles of adjacent panels is the same as the regular spacing between the tiles of each panel.
The same effect is obtained by providing a clearance between the tiles and two adjacent edges of the base board equal to the regular spacing, while at the other two sides the tiles lie flush with the marginal edges.
For panels to be used as floor coverings, an underlay 15 is provided on the underside of the panel.
The panel has self-aligning means in the form of male and female parts; these comprise conical dowel pins 1 6 extending from two adjacent sides and complementary recesses 1 7 in the other two sides. The pins may be brass or other suitable material.
When two like panels abut, the pins 16, of one extend into the corresponding recesses 1 7 of the other and align the panels into correct relationship.
The dowel pins 1 6 are retractable so that panels can be more easily positioned, such as the panel 1 OA of Fig. 1 which will only locate properly when the dowel pins 1 6B of the panel are retracted.
Each dowel pin 1 6 is contained within a cylindrical casing 20 and has a stud 21 on its side to project into a longitudinal slot 22 in the casing.
Thus the dowel pin 1 6 can be moved longitudinally of the casing 20 so that its outer end, which is conical can project from the casing.
The sides of the wall/floor panel base board are drilled and the casing 20 secured e.g. resin bonded into each hole. A slot 23 is provided in the major face of the base board to give access to the stud 21. The slot 23 is conveniently between tiles so that when the panels 10 are in place on the floor or wall, the grouting between the tiles will conceal the slots.
The dowel pins 1 6 are normally kept retracted and openings taped so that the pins are not damaged in transit or storage. When the panels are being laid on a floor or mounted on a wall, the dowel pins are moved outwardly to engage in corresponding recesses in abutting panels. This can be done using a small screw driver or the like to extend between the tiles and into the slots to engage the stud and push it.
The slot 22 in the casing 20 may terminate at each end in a right angle 24, 25 so that when the stud 21 is at its outer or inner limit it can be rotated in to the angle to 'lock' it against longitudinal inward or outward movement.
The recesses 1 7 are preferably formed of conical casings resin-bonded into holes made in the panel. The recesses 1 7 are also normally taped to prevent entry of dirt or the like.
The retractable dowel pins allow two adjacent sides of a panel to abut two other panels at the same time, and when the dowel pins engage in the complementary recesses of the adjacent panels the assembly is properly aligned.
The wall panels can be thinner than the floor panels, both in the thickness of the facia member (tile) and that of the base board.
The base board edges are produced to a tolerance of 1/1000" so that they abut accurately.
The base board may be of moulded glass fibre reinforced plastics and the tiles may be resin bonded to it. The tiles may be positioned by hand or incorporated into the mould.
To compensate for differing expansion coefficients etc., the spaces between the facia members may be grouted before the panel is used or after it has been secured to the wall or floor.
In addition to 'standard' panels intended to cover most of the area, strip panels will be provided to fill in marginal borders. These strip panels may be 1/3, 1/2 and 3/4 wide relative to a standard panel.
The marginal clearance is advantageous where the facia members have a regular spacing between them. Thus, when the panels have been secured in position, the overall effect will be of regularly spaced tiles and the joints will not be noticed. Once the grouting has been applied between the joins it should be impossible to distinguish one panel from the others. The dowel pins and recesses provide accurate alignment and avoid the need to use shims during laying.
The panels are therefore particularly useful for covering uneven surfaces.
In my co-pending application No. 8222142 there is described a wall panel comprising a base panel member on one major face of which a frontage is formed by locating thereon within the confines of the panel, material simulating the expoded face of a wall, said base panel member having at least one pair of opposed complementary edges so that two like panels can be interconnected by engagement of said complementary edges.
A marginal clearance is provided along one of said complementary edges.
In the preferred embodiment of that application, the frontage simulating material is slices of brick and the complementary edges of the base panel are 'castillated' to correspond with the laterally staggered relationship of adjacent rows of bricks.
The bricks are spaced apart to a regular spacing and a marginal clearance is provided so that when two panels abut, the spacing between adjacent bricks of adjacent panels is the same regular spacing. In the preferred embodiment, the marginal clearance is provided at one edge 15, while at the other edge 14 the edge of the brick is substantially at the edge of the base panel.
Claims (5)
1. A wall or floor panel comprising a base board having a number of discrete sides and facia members on one major face located within the confines of the base board area, and self aligning means comprising retractable dowel pin members extending laterally from some sides of the base board and correspondingly spaced recesses in the other sides of the base board.
2. A panel as claimed in claim 1, in which each pin is located in a casing which is inserted into a prepared hole in the side of the panel base board.
3. A panel as claimed in claim 2, in which each casing has a longitudinal slot, each dowel pin has an outstanding projection for location in the slot and a corresponding slot is provided in the major face of the base board at a location between facia members to allow movement of the dowel longitudinally in the casing.
4. A panel as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, in which a panel for use as a floor panel includes an underlay secured to the other major face.
5. A wall or floor panel substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
