Abstract

A cover for a golf club head comprises a pouch formed from two correspondingly shaped, equally sized pieces of flexible material 3,4, secured together along the greater part of their perimeter 5 but with two side edges 6,7 at an angle to each other unsecured, fastening means being provided for releasably fastening the edge 7, the edge 6 being open to allow the golf club shaft to extend through it. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Covers for golf club heads This invention relates to covers for golf club heads.
It is known to provide protective covers for the striking heads of golf clubs, particularly for so called "irons" to prevent damage to or by the club head, for example by scratching. Covers are known comprising a bag or mitten having an opening at one end having an elasticated edge, or a draw cord; also known from British Patent Specification No. 1397252 is a cover for the striking head of an "iron" golf club comprising a pouch of flexible material such as plastics or leather into which the head of the "iron" can be inserted, having a flexible flap extending from one side of the pouch and capable of being folded back around the heel and shaft of the "iron" when the head of the "iron" is in the pouch and securing means, such as a press-stud, or a hooked pile fastener such as VELCRO (Trade Mark) for detachably attaching the free end of the flap to the opposite side of the pouch so that the flap is held around the heel of the "iron" when the cover is in use.
In order to achieve a saving of material, and to provide a cover which may be removed from a golf club head with the minimum of manipulation, the present invention provides a pouch formed from two equal sized pieces of correspondingly shaped flexible material, secured together along the greater part of the perimeteral length but leaving two side edges set at an angle to each other, unsecured, fastening means being provided for releasably fastening one of the said edges, the other side edge being at all times open to allow in use the shaft of a club to extend therethrough.
The fastening means is preferably a VELCRO (Trade Mark) type of pile fastener, but press studs for example may be used instead.
The flexible material may be leather or a synthetic plastics material for example simulating leather, and may be lined with textile fabric such as stocking fabric. The pieces may be secured by peripheral stitching.
As no tongue is provided, there is a saving of material as compared with the known club covers, and the provision of the fastening on an edge of the pouch enables the cover to be pulled from the club and opening in one movement, the club head causing opening of the fastening as the cover is pulled from the club.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:- Figure lisa view of the cover, with one edge folded back, and Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the cover on the head of a golf iron.
As illustrated, a cover 1 comprises two pieces of flexible material, 3 and 4, of complimentary shape superposed and secured together by stitching 5 around the greater part of their periphery, leaving two edges 6 and 7 unstitched. The edges 6,7 subtend a right angle to each other, and edge 7 is longer than edge 6. The edge 7 is closable by fastening means comprising complimentary hooked pile strips 8 and 9 one stitched onto the inner surface of each piece 3 and 4 along the respective edge 7. The edge 6 has no fasteners associated therewith, and remains open at all times. This allows the shaft 10 of a club 11,the striking head of which, 12, is enclosed in the cover, to be accommodated, as shown in Figure 2.
The cover may be removed by pulling at from the head, the heel of the club forming a wedge which forces the fastener open without need to manipulate the fastener.
Press stud fasteners may be used, although these may need to be manipulated open on occasions.
As there is no flap, material is saved as only the flexible material needed to form the pouch is required. The flexible material may be leather, or synthetic plastics material, e.g. simulating leather, and may be lined internally with stockinette or other knitted or woven textile material.
CLAIMS (Filed on 3.1.84) 1. A cover for a golf club head, comprising a pouch formed from two equal sized pieces of correspondingly shaped flexible material, secured together along the greater part of the perimeteral length but leaving two side edges set at an angle to each other unsecured, fastening means being provided for releasably fastening one of the said edges, the other side edge being at all times open to ailow in use the shaft of a club to extend therethrough.
2. A golf club head cover as claimed in claim 1, in which the two equal sized pieces are secured together by peripheral stitching.
3. A golf club head cover as claimed in either of the preceding claims, in which the unsecured side edges are essentially straight edges.
4. A golf club head cover as claimed in any of the preceding claims, in which the unsecured side edges subtend an angle of about 90 degrees.
5. A golf club head cover as claimed in any of the preceding claims, in which the releasably fastenable side edge is longer than the side edge which is open at all times.
6. A golf club head cover as claimed in any of the preceding claims, in which the releasably fastenable side edge is fastenable with press studs or with hooked pile material.
