Description

SPECIFICATION Espagnolette This invention relates to an espagnolette suitable for fastening a door. The invention has been developed primarily in relation to a sliding door, for example a patio door. It is an object of the invention to provide an improved espagnolette suitable for use with a door.
According to the invention, we provide an espagnolette for a door comprising an espagnolette bar adapted to be mounted at an edge of a door to move longitudinally thereof and to engage a frame of the door to lock the door, a catch member adapted to engage said frame to hold the door in a closed position, and a manually operable control member movable between a first position wherein said catch member is engagable with said frame, a second position wherein said espagnolette bar engages said frame, and a third position wherein said'espagnolette bar and catch member are released from said frame to permit the door to be opened.
There may be provided means operable to prevent movement of said espagnolette bar to engage the frame except when the door is in its closed position.
These and other features of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a partly exposed front elevation of part of a door and espagnolette; Figures 2 to 4 show the espagnolette of Fig. 1 in different conditions of operations.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1, there is shown part of the edge of a patio door, comprising a vertical member 1 to which is fixed a glass panel 2. The vertical member 1 is a hollow elongate member of rectangular cross section, and forms part of a rigid structure of the door, which is slidable in known manner.
Within the member 1 is accomodated an espagnolette having a case 8. The case supports a catch member 3 with a body 5 and a hooked end portion 6, pivotable about a pin 7 within the case 8 of the espagnolette. A spring 9 supported on a peg 10 within the case 8 biases the catch member 3 in the ciockwise direction, to the position illustrated.
The case 8 also supports, for vertical sliding movement within it, a drive plate 11 whose upper and lower ends are connected to two parts 1 2 of an espagnolette bar extending through the upright member 1. The other ends of the parts 1 2 of the espagnolette bar are provided with draw bolts or other formations which are engagable with the fixed frame of the door when the door is in the closed position, to hold the door closed in known manner.
A control member 1 3 is mounted within the case 8 for angular movement, and has a square aperture 1 4 for receiving a correspondingly shaped drive bar of a handle (not shown), to move the member 1 3. The member 1 3 has an arcuate portion at the ends of which are provided abutments 15, 1 6 engagable with an abutment 1 7 secured to the drive plate 11 to move the drive plate, and hence the espagnolette bar 1 2 vertically.
A bar 1 8 is mounted in the espagnolette case 8, and is urged by a spring 1 9 received within a sleeve 20 to protrude from the case as illustrated. A recess 21 is formed in the bar 18, and is arranged such that when the bar protrudes from the case as shown the drive plate 11 cannot move downwardly because a pin 22 thereon abuts the bar 1 8. However, when the bar 1 8 is retracted against the biasing of spring 19, pin 22 is aligned with and can enter the recess 21, permitting the drive plate 11 to be moved downwardly.
Drive plate 11 further is provided with a peg 26. A locking lever 23 is pivotally mounted in the case 8, and has a hooked end 24 which is engagable with the top surface 25 of peg 26 when the drive plate 11 is in its lowermost position. Locking lever 23 is movable by a key operated lock, not shown, fitted in association with the espagnolette.
Case 8 of the espagnolette is also provided with a member 30 which protrudes from the vertical member 1 of the door. The member 30 is rigidly fixed to the case 8, and is intended to engage in a recess in the fixed frame within which the door operates, to prevent break in by lifting the door when it is closed.
The operation of the espagnolette will now be described with reference to Figs. 2 to 4 of the drawings. It will be assumed, initially, that the door is brought from the open position to the closed position by sliding it from left to right with reference to the drawings, to approach a vertical member 32 of the fixed frame within which the door operates. As the door approaches the frame member 32, the hooked end 6 of catch member 5 abuts the frame member and is pivotally moved against its spring 9 so that it can enter an aperture in the frame member 32 and engage behind a keeper plate 31 defining such aperture. The catch member will then hold the door in the closed position. As this position is reached, bar 1 8 is retracted against the force of its spring 19, to bring recess 21 into alignment with pin 22 on the drive plate 11.This condition is shown in Fig. 2.
Referring now to Fig. 3 of the drawings, the handle of the espagnolette can now be operated to move member 1 3 in the clockwise sense with regard to the drawings. Abutment 1 5 on the arcuate portion of member 1 3 contacts abutment 1 7 on the drive plate 11, to move the drive plate, and hence the espagnolette bar 1 2 downwardly. The end 24 of locking lever 23 can engage the upper surface 25 of peg 26, positively to lock the drive plate and hence the espagnolette bar in such position. In this position, the formations such as draw bolts provided on the espagnolette bar will be engaged with the frame member 32 so that the door is locked in the closed position. The locking lever 23 may be, as illustrated, spring biased to its position shown in Fig. 3 in which it locks the drive plate, or may be required to be brought to such position by operation of its key operated lock.
If now it is desired to open the door, the key operated lock associated with locking lever 23 must be used to disengage the locking lever from the peg 26, as shown in Fig. 4. The handle can be operated to move the member 1 3 in the anticlockwise sense, so that abutment 1 6 thereon engages abutment 1 7 on the drive plate 11 to raise the drive plate and hence the espagnolette bar 1 2.
Simultaneously, abutment 1 5 on member 1 3 engages the catch member 5 pivotally to move the latter against its spring 9 and disengage it from the frame member 32. The door can now be opened.
After the door is opened, the member 1 3 returns, when the handle is released, to its position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The spring 9 associated with catch member 5 provides for such movement. The espagnolette then remains in the condition of Figs. 1 and 2, until next the door is closed.
