Abstract
In a bolt and lock mechanism a bolt comprising linked rails (3, 4) is moved from the inoperative position shown to its bolting position by a handle which rotates a cam (13) to turn gears (16, 40) meshed with the rail (4). Before this, a restrictor (37) on rail (4) inhibits the action of a dead lock mechanism by lying in the path of a tongue (38) on a lever (32) carrying the dead lock member (6). When the rails (3, 4) reach their bolting position, a key can move the lock member (6) to the locking position. Then the tongue (38) will be aligned with the restrictor (37) preventing unbolting of the rails until the dead lock mechanism is unlocked.
Description
COMBINED BOL AND LOCK MECHANISMS This invention relates to combined bolt and lock mechanisms for providing releasable securing means between doors and door frames, containers and closures therefor and so forth.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a mechanism wherein a bolt device and a dead lock interact in a particularly simple, smooth, and economically constructed way to provide added security.
According to the invention a bolt and lock mechanism comprises a reciprocable bolt member, a handle mounted on the mechanism for moving the bolt member to and fro between a bolting position and an inoperative location, a dead lock mechanism operable by a removable key to move a dead lock member between a locking position and an inoperative position, a restrictor mounted to move with the bolt member and an abutment element mounted to move with the dead lock member, the restrictor and abutment member being arranged for the restrictor to engage the abutment member and thereby inhibit movement of the dead lock member to the locking position when the bolt member is in its inoperative location and for the abutment member to engage the restrictor thereby holding the bolt member in its bolting position while the dead lock member is in its locking position and to free the restrictor to permit movement of the bolt member to its inoperative location only after the lock member has been withdrawn to its unlocking position.
The bolt member may be mounted for rectilinear movement along a path between its bolting position and its inoperative position and the dead lock member may be carried by a lever mounted for rectilinear movement along a path perpendicular to the path of the bolt member, the abutment member being a projection on the lever positioned laterally to engage the restrictor when the bolt member is in its inoperative location and to present at its end an abutment for the restrictor when the bolt member is in its bolting position and the dead lock member is in its locking position.
Very advantageously the bolt member may comprise two coaxial sliding rails connected by a linkage within a casing for the mechanism, the rails being mounted to project in opposite directions through the casing to cooperate with keeps outside the casing.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect one mechanism in accordance therewith will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figs. 1 and 2 are vertical sections on a bolt and lock mechanism, respectively taken on two parallel planes therethrough;
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing one end of the mechanism as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 but with a lock mechanism therein shown in a different operative condition; and
Fig. 4 is an end view of the mechanism of Figs. 1 to 3.
Referring to the drawings, the latch and lock mechanism comprises a casing 1 closed by a plate 2 for being secured, for example, to a door or door frame, sliding rails or bolts 3, 4 carrying cams (not shown) for engaging keeps on the opposite unit (i.e. door frame or door) in known manner, a latch member 5 and a dead lock member 6 also for engaging the opposite unit. The mechanism is arranged, as will be described in detail below, for the locking action of the dead lock to be inhibited until the sliding rails 3, 4 are in their bolting positions and for the unbolting of the sliding rails or bolts 3, 4 to be inhibited until the lock mechanism has been unlocked.
The rails or bolts 3, 4 are linked together by a linkage 3a so as to move together and they move upwards as viewed in Figs. 1 to 3, to their bolting positions. A steel spring 7 retains the rails in a vertical position while they slide on flat bearings 8, 9, 9a, 10. In this example the stroke of the rails 3, 4 is 16 mm.
To raise the rails 3, 4 to their bolting positions a handle 11 (Fig. 4) is turned upwards from the horizontal position. This handle is journalled about a horizontal axis in the casing 1 and is furnished with an 8 mm square spigot 12 fitting into a cam 13 formed with a projection 14 interposed between two compression springs 15 tending to maintain the cam in the central position shown.
Turning the handle upwards causes the cam 13 to turn two arcuate gears 16, 40 about fixed axes 16a, 41 for their teeth engaging a rack in the rail 4 to move the rails 3, 4 to their bolting positions. Movement of the handle 11 downwards causes the cam 31 to turn anti-clockwise (Fig.
1) to actuate the gears 16, 40 to move the rails 3, 4 downwards to the unlatching positions in which they are disconnected from the keeps. In either event, whether the rails have been moved up or down, release of the handle 11 enables the springs 15 to return the cam 13 to the central position of Fig. 1 to engage either a nose 16b on the gear 16 or a nose 40a on the gear 40 to hold the rails 3, 4 in the positions to which they have been set.
The latch member 5 is mounted to reciprocate in the
plate 2 and is carried by a stem 17 with a flange 18 at
its left-hand end. The latch member 5 is normally held
by a spring 19 in its outer latching position shown in
Figs. 1, 2, 4. However, when cam 13 is turned anti
clockwise to unbolt the rails 34, a lip 22 on the cam 13
acts on a lever 20 pivoted on the axis 41 and bearing on
the stem 17 to move the latch member 5 to the left
sufficiently long enough for the door to be opened.
Turning now to the lock mechanism, this comprises a
lever 23 guided for movement up and down by fixed pins 24, 25 in slots 26, 27 in the lever 23. The lever 23 can be moved upwards by a key actuated cam 28 as the cam 28 sweeps over an edge 29 of the lever 23, the movement being against the action of a return spring 30. The lever 23 has a U-shaped slot 31 for holding the dead lock member 6 either in its withdrawn unlocking position or in its projected locking position. The lock member 6 forms part of a lever 32 guided for movement to and horizontally between the flat bearings 9a and 10 with a horizontal slot 33 engaging the pin 25.
The cam 28 is actuated by a barrel lock (not shown)
actuated by a key (not shown) inserted through an
aperture 34 in the casing 1.
The lever 32 carries a pin 35 projecting into the
U-shaped slot 31. When the lock member 6 is withdrawn
the pin 35 lies in the left-hand limb of the U-shaped
slot 30 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To lock the dead lock
member the cam 28 is turned by the key to the position of
Fig. 3. In this movement the cam 28 sweeping over the
edge 29 lifts the lever 23 to move the said limb along
the pin 35 to bring the horizontal part of the U-shaped
slot into register with the pin 35, whereupon the cam 28
acting on edge 36 of the lever 32 moves the pin 35 to the
right hand limb of the U-shaped slot so that when the cam
28 moves beyond the lever 23 the spring 33 depresses the
lever 23 for the right hand limb of the U-shaped slot to
receive the pin 35. The dead lock member 6 is,
therefore, then locked in its projected locking position
(Fig. 3).
However, the aforesaid locking action of the dead
lock member 6 can only be effected if the rail 4 has
previously been lifted to its bolting position in the manner described above. Otherwise a restrictor 37 (Fig.
1) lies in the path of a tongue 38 on the dead lock lever
32 limiting the rightward movement of the dead lock lever
32 to a position in which the dead lock member 6 is ineffective. In the locking condition shown in Fig. 3, the tongue 38 lies beneath the restrictor 37 so as to prevent the rail 4 from returning to its unlatching position.
The key barrel is such that the key has to be turned through 3600 before it can be removed. To unlock the dead lock mechanism the key has to be inserted again and turned through 3600 in the opposite direction. In its movement from the position of Fig. 3 to that of Fig. 1 the cam 28 sweeps over the edge 29 of the lever 23 to lift the lever 23 to bring the horizontal part of the Ushaped slot 31 into register with the pin 35. In further movement of the cam 28 it engages an edge 39 of the lever 32 pulling the lever to its left-hand position of Fig. 2 and immediately thereupon release the lever 23 for the spring 30 to depress the lever 23 bringing the left hand limb of the U-shaped slot into locking engagement with the pin 35 thereby holding dead lock member in its retracted position.
Now that the dead lock has been returned to its unlocked condition, the dead lock tongue has been moved to one side of the restrictor 37 leaving the rail 4 free to descend in the unlatching process. The unlatching process is effected by turning the handle 11 down thereby turning the cam 13 in an anti-clockwise direction as seen in Fig. 1 to actuate the gears 16, 40 to move the rails 3, 4 downwards freeing their cams from the aforesaid keeps.
Claims (7)
1. A bolt and lock mechanism comprising a reciprocable bolt member, a handle mounted on the mechanism for moving the bolt member to and fro between a bolting position and an inoperative location, a dead lock mechanism operable by a removable key to move a dead lock member between a locking position and an inoperative position, a restrictor mounted to move with the bolt member and an abutment element mounted to move with the dead lock member, the restrictor and abutment member being arranged for the restrictor to engage the abutment member and thereby inhibit movement of the dead lock member to the locking position when the bolt member is in its inoperative location and for the abutment member to engage the restrictor thereby holding the bolt member in its bolting position while the dead lock member is in its locking position and to free the restrictor to permit movement of the bolt member to its inoperative location only after the lock member has been withdrawn to its unlocking position.
2. A mechanism according to Claim 1, in which the bolt member is mounted for rectilinear movement along a path between its bolting position and its inoperative position and in which the dead lock member is carried by a lever mounted for rectilinear movement along a path perpendicular to the path of the bolt member, the abutment member being a projection on the lever positioned laterally to engage the restrictor when the bolt member is in its inoperative location and to present at its end an abutment for the restrictor when the bolt member is in its bolting position and the dead lock member is in its locking position.
3. A mechanism according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the bolt member comprises two coaxial sliding rails connected by a linkage within a casing for the mechanism, the rails being mounted to project in opposite directions through the casing to cooperate with keeps outside the casing.
4. A mechanism according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising two gears mounted to rock respectively about spaced parallel axes and a cam mounted to rock between the gears on a third axis, the gears being meshed with the bolt member, the handle being fixed coaxially with the cam and the cam and gears being provided with engaging surfaces whereby when the handle is. turned in one direction the bolt member is moved from the inoperative location to the bolting position and when the handle is turned in the opposite direction the bolt member is returned to its inoeprative location.
5. A mechanism according to Claim 4, in which resilient means are provided for returning the cam and handle to a central position wherein the cam acts to retain the bolt member in the position on location to which it has been moved by turning the handle in one or other of the said directions from the central position.
6. A mechanism according to Claim 4 or Claim 5, provided also with a spring loaded latch member, and with a lever operable by the cam to withdraw the latch member against the action of the spring to an unlatching position when the cam is moved to withdraw the bolt from its bolting position.
7. A bolt and lock mechanism substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
