Abstract
A suction cleaner comprises a fan connected to a downstream dust- collecting bag by a passage 11, 12, which is partly lined with sound- absorbing material 10, and a device 8 which monitors the pressure in the passage, and hence the degree of filling of the bag, comprises a diaphragm 15 one side of which is connected to the passage through the material 10 by a path indicated by arrows. The passage may include filter fleece 25 to exclude dust from the diaphragm, which actuates an electric switch via lever 23. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to suction cleaners
This invention relates to a suction cleaner including a device for indicating the degree of filling of a filter bag of the cleaner.
A known type of such a suction cleaner also includes a suction fan and a sound absorber in an air passage downstream of the suction fan, the filter bag being intended to be located downstream of the sound absorber. The device for indicating the degree of filling of the filter bag consists of a pressure chamber having a diaphragm. In use, the pressure chamber receives suction pressure from the air flow between the suction fan and the filter bag and this acts on the diaphragm which mechanically switches an electric switch which gives an indication of the degree of filling of the filter bag. However, such devices are at present installed as separate pressure chambers, which are then connected by hoses or tubes to the regions to be supervised.
Since those hoses or tubes have a small crosssection, it is necessary, in spaces to which dust is admitted, for them to be covered with some sort of filter at the ends that are open to the dust passages, so that they are not clogged or blocked.
According to the present invention, there is provided a suction cleaner including a device for indicating the degree of filling of a filter bag of the cleaner, a suction fan, and a sound absorber in an air passage downstream of the suction fan, the filter bag being intended to be located downstream of the sound absorber; the sound absorber including a housing, part of which forms a pressure chamber of said device: and said chamber being closed on one side by a diaphragm and having an opening leading to an internal part of said sound absorber.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view, partly in section of part of a hand suction cleaner, and
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail of Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a motor head 1 of a hand suction cleaner, the motor head 1 consisting of a double-walled housing 2 and an electric motor 3 which is arranged in the housing 2 and which drives a suction fan. The motor head 1 is connected on the side 5 with nozzles or other devices (not shown) and, on the side 6, a connection to a dust filter bag (not shown) is formed. It will be seen that the dust filter bag is downstream of the suction fan.
Since it is usual with such models of suction cleaners for the dust filter bag to be merely enclosed by a basket made of fabric of a thin covering, all noises generated by the electric motor 3 and suction fan are directly transmitted and discharged through the filter bag.
Consequently a sound absorber 7 is interposed in the motor head 1 in order to keep the noise generation to a minimum. A device 8 for indicating the degree of filling of the filter bag is fitted into the suction cleaner, this device relying on excess pressure in the dust passages, i.e. it has to be situated so that the pressure reading has to take place on the way from the suction fan to the dust filter bag.
Since clogging problems exist with conventional reading or sensing lines and the sound absorber 7 is constructed as a so-called absorption sound damper, the present pressureindicating or sensing device 8 is arranged directly on a sound damper housing 9, absorption material 10 being used as a filter (see Figure 2).
As shown, an air passage 12 leads from the suction fan and is connected to a perforated tube 11, the absorption material 10 being arranged in the air path following the tube 11. In the viscinity of the connection point between the air passage 12 and the tube 1 the housing 9 has a pot-like depression 13 which forms a pressure chamber of the device 8. The chamber is closed on one side by a diaphragm 15, the diaphragm 15 being held by a holding ring 18, which engages with a hook 1 9 over a bead 20 on the outer wall of the depression 13 and is riveted at the upper end on a pin 21. A fixed plate 22 is carried centrally by the diaphragm 15, which plates 22, with upward deflection of the membrane 1 5, is able through a lever 23 to actuate, for example, an electric switch (not shown).
The pressure chamber has an opening 16 provided in its base, this opening leading to an internal part of the sound absorber 7 by means of an intermediate space 17. If required, a filter fleece 25 can be arranged adjacent the opening 16 in the intermediate space 17.
It will be seen that the pressure chamber is located away from the main stream of the air flow but is in communication with the air pressure in the passage leading from the suction fan without requiring the provision of tubing or the like. The arrows in Figure 2 indicate how the pressure is simply transmitted to the inside of the pressure chamber.
