Endless band conveyers, articles carried by.-Apparatus for drying coated plates comprises a chamber with conveyer chains adapted to move rearwardly and forwardly within the chamber and having holders for supporting the plates during their conveyance in opposite directions through the chamber, means for feeding the plates edgewise into engagement with the holders and means for transferring the plates from the rearwardly to the forwardly moving conveyers so that only a single side of each plate contacts with its holder. The plates are fed consecutively into the drying-chamber by conveyers 18<a>, 19<a>, Figs. 2 and 3, and delivered above the front end of the conveyer chains A so that their upper edges contact with the holders 15 which are pivotally connected to the axles of the chain links in the manner described in Specification 203,616, [Class 24, Chains &c.]. In order to increase the space between the holders at the entrance to the drier, the conveyer chains are passed over sharp bends formed by small rollers mounted upon a shaft 17. After a sheet has been fed into the dried, the next holder 15 is raised automatically into a rearwardly inclined position between guards 65 supported in loops suspended from the roof of the drier by means of arms 26 secured to the shaft 17 which is oscillated by a rod 28 connected to a cam 29 secured upon a rotary shaft 30; the arms are provided with spring-pressed latches 27, Figs. 15 and 16, which engage with the backs of the holders. The lower edges of the sheets slide upon fixed guide rods 33 until the sheets rest upon the conveyer chains. The sheets are conveyed to the rear of the drier and are transferred to the lower conveyer chains B, Fig. 5, by chains 42 arranged on opposite sides of the holders. The transfer chains are supported by sprockets carried upon extensions 41, 41a on arms 39, pivoted upon a shaft 39<a>, and are guided in an arcuate path by rods 40. The arms can be adjusted to or from the conveyer chains A by links 71, 72 mounted upon a manually-actuated shaft 70. The sheets slide upon the transfer chains until they rest upon the conveyer chains B which support the holders in a forwardly inclined position so that the uncoated surfaces of the sheets remain in contact with the same sides of the holders. On reaching the front of the drier, the sheets pass on to inclined belts 46 which retard the movement of the lower edges of the sheets, and when the holders are raised so as to engage with spring-pressed latches 62, allow the sheets to fall on to the discharge conveyers 60 with their coated surfaces uppermost. The holders are raised as they reach the front of the drier by arms 47, which are oscillated by rods 49 connected to cams 50 mounted upon the shaft 30, and have spring-pressed latches 48, Fig. 10, to engage behind the holders. The drier is heated by gas burners 54, and a continuous circulation of air is maintained from the front to the rear of the drier by deflectors 78 arranged at the front of the drier between the upper conveyer chains. Warm air is supplied through pipes arranged at the front of the drier.
