Abstract

A vibration damper or combination shock absorber spring unit comprising an outer carrier tube and at least one securing part or holder which grasps only partially around the carrier tube arranged fixedly on the carrier tube by a welded connection. The welded connection comprises at least one weld seam (4, 5, 6) extending over the entire circumference of the carrier tube (1). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vibration damper or combination shock absorber spring unit for motor vehicles The invention relates to a vibration damper or a combination shock absorber spring unit for motor vehicles having an external carrier tube, where securing parts or holders are fixedly arranged on the carrier tube and the securing is effected by a welded connection, while the securing parts or holders grasp only partially around the carrier tube.
Such securing parts or holders which grasp only partially around the carrier tube are unilaterally secured to the carrier tube by means of weld seams which extend part-way. With this type of securing it is disadvantageous that due to the welding operation a heat distortion occurs which leads to unacceptable deviations of angle and dimension on the carrier tube, these deviations being the greater, the more distantly the securing part or holder is fitted from the lower end of the carrier tube. Such welded connections require time-consuming and expensive trueing operations and finish work to eliminate the deviations of dimensions.
The problem of the present invention consists in avoiding the disadvantages of the known constructions and producing a simple connection of securing parts or holders on the carrier tube of a vibration damper or combination shock absorber spring unit.
According to the invention this problem is solved in that for the welded connection of each securing part or holder which grasps partially around the carrier tube at least one weld seam is arranged extending over the whole circumference of the carrier tube. This achieves a heating of the carrier tube which -like the cooling tocextends uniformly over the whole circumference. Thus the thermal stresses in the carrier tube occur only concentrically, and not unilaterally, whereby distortion, especially on thin-walled tubes, is avoided by means of the surrounding welded seam.
The invention will be explained in greater detail below by reference to the drawing.
The Figure shows the lower end of a combination shock absorber spring unit where the securing parts or holders 2 and 3 are secured on the carrier tube by means of a welded connection. These securing parts 2 and 3 grasp only partially around the carrier tube 1, with the weld seams 4 and 5 provided to secure the holder 3 extending over the whole tube circumference. This is especially expedient here since the holder 3 is welded fast at a distance from the carrier tube end and the weld seam extending over the whole circumference of the carrier tube effects a uniform heating and cooling of the carrier tube. The stresses occuring due to the welding operation thus proceed likewise over the entire carrier tube circumference and cause no distortion of any kind of the carrier tube 1.The holder 2 also is secured at its upper end with a weld seam 6 extending over the entire circumference of the carrier tube 1, while the weld seam 7 arranged on the carrier tube end can be formed to extend part-way, since here there is no fear of any distortion of the carrier tube 1 detrimental to the function of the combination shock absorber spring unit. Of course it is also possible for this weld seam 7 to be arranged to extend over the entire circumference.
1. A vibration damper or combination shock absorber spring unit having an outer carrier tube, and at least one securing part or holder which grasps only partially around the carrier tube is arranged fixedly on the carrier tube by a welded connection, characterised in that the welded connection comprises at least one weld seam (4, 5, 6) extending over the entire circumference of the carrier tube (1).
2. A vibration damper or combination shock absorber spring unit for motor vehicles substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
