Abstract

Apparatus for testing the load carrying capabilities of members, in particular trunnions 2 on nuclear fuel transport flasks 1 comprises a saddle 4 dimensioned to sit on a flask and supporting two hydraulic jacks 5 which exert controlled loads on a beam 7 spanning the flask and having depending side arms 8 engaging the trunnions by eyes 10. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Load test apparatus The present invention concerns an apparatus for testing members which are subjected to loads.
In particular the apparatus concerns an apparatus for testing the loads which can be applied to trunnions on flasks for the transport of irradiated nuclear fuel elements. It is desirable to test the trunnions before a flask enters into service to ensure that the trunnions are securely anchored to the flask and will not break away during use with possible disastrous consequences.
According to the present invention a load test apparatus comprises hydraulic jack means operable to exert controlled loads on a beam, the beam being releasably attachable to members under test.
For testing trunnions on a fuel flask the hydraulic jack means are conveniently mounted on a saddle to sit upon the flask. The jack means cooperate with a loading arm which spans the flask and has depending side arms which engage the trunnions.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an apparatus for testing trunnions on a nuclear fuel flask; Figure 2 is a schematic circuit diagram of the apparatus.
A flask for the transport of irradiated nuclear fuel elements comprises a cylindrical body 1 having spaced apart cooling fins 2 and pairs of lifting trunnions 3. The trunnions 3 are fixedly anchored to the body 1.
It is desirable to test the load that can be applied to the trunnions before the flask enters into service to receive irradiated nuclear fuel elements.
The testing apparatus in Figure 1 comprises a saddle 4 to sit on the cooling fins 2 and carrying two hydraulic jacks 5. The jacks 5 cooperate with respective locating rings 6 on a load beam 7. A side arm 8 depends from each end of the beam 7.
Each side arm 8 terminates in an eye 10 to engage the respective trunnion 3 on the flask.
In use, with the apparatus located in position on the flask as shown in Figure 1, the jacks are actuated simultaneously to apply a known load on the trunnions. Figure 2 is an example of a circuit for hydraulic jacks 5. The jacks 5 can apply loads to the trunnions in excess of the maximum likely to be encountered during use of the flask. The saddle can be adapted to fit flasks of different diameters by means of removable inserts or adaptors having appropriate radii of curvature.
An hydraulic hand pump 12 can be employed to actuate the jacks.
The working pressure is indicated on gauge 11.
A facility 13 for calibration of the gauge 11 can be provided by means of a T-connection adjacent to the hand pump. A back-up facility is desirable in the event of mal-functioning of the gauge 11.
Thus, for example, a strain gauge can be provided on each side arm. Alternatively, discs or pads of a crushable material can be arranged between the jacks and the load beam, such discs or pads being crushed or deformed when the applied load exceeds a certain maximum.
