Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; draining; detecting leakage; boxes combined with ball or roller bearings.-Packing for the periscopes and range-finders of submarines, comprises one or more clearance spaces supplied with oil, grease or other material under pressure, the annular spaces being packed at the ends to prevent the entrance of water and the escape of the oil &c. The packing is associated with one or more draining chambers, by means of which leakage can be observed, and may contain ball or roller bearings. The clearance 3 is supplied with oil or grease by a pipe 4 and may be grooved, as shown. The space 3 is packed at the ends by cup-leather or metallic packing 2, 5. Leakage collecting in a chamber 6 escapes by a pipe 7, which may be provided with a tap. The chamber 6 may be packed at the lower end by a cup-leather, or by a flexible sleeve secured to the chamber and to the part to be packed. Alternatively, the chamber 6 may be packed by a second clearance 11, also supplied with oil or grease, with packing at its ends and associated with a second draining chamber 12. The movable rod may be supported by ball, roller or other bearings 9, 10 arranged as shown, or, alternatively, a bearing may be arranged in the clearance 3. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of sleeves interposed between the ball or roller bearings and the movable rod.
