Abstract

The clutch/gearbox unit for a motor vehicle comprises a friction clutch (3) with a clutch disc (23) having a torsional vibration damper (25) in the torque transmission path between the friction linings (21) and the input shaft (5) of the gearbox (7). The torsional vibration damper (25) is only dimensioned for damping the vibrations arising in the torque transmission condition of the gearbox (7). The gearbox (7) comprises a sensor (39) which detects the no-load condition of the gearbox (7) (by sensing when the gear selector lever 13 is in neutral position) and produces a control signal designating the no-load condition. The friction clutch is disengaged by means of a driving device (35), responsive to the control signal, for the duration of the no-load condition. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A clutch/gearbox unit for a motor vehicle The invention relates to a clutch/gearbox unit for a motor vehicle and, in particular, to a unit whose friction clutch comprises a torsional vibration damper.
The clutch disc of a conventional friction clutch of a motor vehicle driven by an internalcombustion engine usually includes a torsional vibration damper. The object of the torsional vibration damper is to reduce the coefficient of cyclic irregularity of the internal-combustion engine in order to protect the torque transmitting elements during load operation. During no-load operation, the torsional vibration damper is meant to suppress gearbox noises which arise due to the fact that the gears of the gearbox, when the clutch is engaged, rotate in accordance with the idle speed of the internal-combustion engine.
From German utility model 80 04 841 there is known a clutch disc for a friction clutch where a centrifugally controlled operating device controls the damping characteristic of the torsional vibration damper as a function of speed. Above the idle speed the damping characteristic is adapted to the requirements of the load operation and below the idle speed it is adapted to the requirements of the no-load operation. Torsional vibration dampers of this kind are extremely complicated and are expensive in production and often do not have an adequate service life. Such torsional vibration dampers are mainly used in conjunction with diesel engines since these have a high coefficient of cyclic irregularity, particularly during idle running.
It is the object of the present invention to indicate a clutch/gearbox unit for a motor vehicle driven by an internal-combustion engine, more especially a diesel engine, which prevents torsional vibrations of the gearbox, particularly during no-load operation.
According to the invention, the torsional vibration damper of the friction clutch is dimensioned only for damping the vibrations arising in the torque transmission condition of the gearbox, that is to say during the load operation.
The gearbox comprises a sensor which detects the no-load condition of the gearbox, when the gearbox output shaft has been disconnected from the gearbox input shaft. The friction clutch can be engaged and disengaged by means of a controllable driving device. The sensor controls the driving device in such a way that the friction clutch is disengaged for the duration of the noload condition of the gearbox. The clutch disc, and thus the gearbox, is not driven during no-load operation, and therefore it is impossible for any noises to arise. Since the torsional vibration damper only has to be dimensioned for the load operation, simple vibration damper constructions can be used.
The driving device preferably is a positioning servo-motor such as is used in conjunction with semi- or fully automatic clutch control equipment, for example of the kind known from German Offenlegungsschrift 30 28 250. The driving device may be provided in addition to a conventional clutch pedal.
The invention will hereinafter be explained in more detail with reference to a drawing, in which the clutch/gearbox unit of a motor vehicle driven by an internal-combustion engine is diagrammatically shown.
A crankshaft 1 of an internal-combustion engine of a motor vehicle, more especially of a diesel engine, is connected via a friction clutch 3 to an input shaft 5 of a gearbox 7. The drive wheels of the motor vehicle, which are diagrammatically shown at 9, are non-rotatably connected to an output shaft 11 of the gearbox 7.
The torque transmitting speeds, and thus the transmission ratio of the gearbox 7, can be selected by means of a gear-change lever 13. In the neutral position of the change lever 13, the output shaft 11 is disconnected from the input shaft 5, but at least a proportion of the gears of the gearbox 7 continues to be non-rotatably connected to the input shaft 5.
The friction clutch 3 is of conventional design and comprises a flywheel 1 5 which is nonrotatably fitted to the crankshaft 1. Non-rotatably but axially displaceably guided on the flywheel 1 5 is a pressure plate 1 7 which is pressed- against the flywheel 1 5 by a diaphragm spring 19. The diaphragm spring 1 9 is supported with its outer circumference on the pressure plate 1 7 and along a smaller diameter on the flywheel 1 5. Between the pressure plate 1 7 and the fiywheel 1 5 there is clamped a clutch disc 23 which is provided with friction linings 21 and which is non-rotatably but axially displaceably guided on the input shaft 5 of the gearbox 7.The clutch disc 23 comprises a torsional vibration damper 25 which is dimensioned for the torque transmitting load operation of the gearbox 7. The torsional vibration damper 25 may be of conventional design and may comprise a spring damper and a friction damper.
For the control of the friction clutch there is provided a clutch pedal 27 which is operable by the driver of the motor vehicle and which is connected to a disengaging fork 31 via a linkage 29 or the like. The disengaging fork 31 acts on the diaphragm spring 1 9 via an operator 33 which is displaceable in the axial direction of the friction clutch 3. By depressing the clutch pedal 27 one can disengage the friction clutch 3.
The friction clutch 3 can be furthermore disengaged by a servo-motor 35. The servo-motor 35 is also connected to the disengaging fork 31 via a linkage 37 or the like and acts in parallel with the clutch pedal 27. A sensor 39 detects on the gearbox 7 whether the change lever 13 is in its neutral position. The sensor 39 controls the servo motor 35 via a line 41 in such a way that this motor keeps the friction clutch 3 disengaged as long as the change lever 13 is in its neutral position. When the friction clutch 3 is disengaged, the clutch disc 23, the input shaft 5 and the gears of the gearbox 7, which are non-rotatably connected to the input shaft 5, are at a standstill so that there do not arise any idle running noises which have to be damped.
Instead of controlling the friction clutch by means of a clutch pedal, there may be provided a semi- or fully automatic clutch control such as is described, for example, in German Offenlegungsschrift 30 28 250, in which case the servo-motor 35 may be utilised in addition to the program-controlled control of the friction clutch 3.
