Abstract

Apparatus for securing a sheet (20) of flexible material comprises a channel (10) having a base (11) and walls (12 and 13) which are spaced apart less than the width of a securing member (15) except at the level of recesses (16 and 17). The member (15) is a force fit in the recesses and secures the sheet (20). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for securing flexible sheet material This invention is concerned with apparatus for securing in position a sheet of flexible material such as polythene.
Large sheets of polythene are used extensively as temporary covers and it has heretofore proved difficult to "tie down" the edges of the sheet satisfactorily.
It is an object of the present invention to provide improved apparatus for tying down the edges of flexible sheet material.
The present invention is apparatus for securing flexible sheet material, the apparatus comprising a channel having a base and spaced upstanding walls and a member whose width is greater than its thickness, said walls being generally spaced apart by a distance intermediate said width and said thickness but being recessed at one level such that the member can bridge the walls at that level.
Preferably the walls are spaced apart less above said level than below.
The member may comprise a flat bar having rounded edges.
The walls may be provided with respective rounded recesses at that level.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a cross-section through apparatus according to the present invention before a sheet of flexible material is secured; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the apparatus of Fig. 1 with a sheet of flexible material secured in position.
As shown in the drawings, apparatus for securing a sheet of flexible material comprises a channel member 10 having a base 11 and two upstanding walls 12 and 13 which are, in this embodiment, mirror images of each other, and a securing member 1 5 whose width is greater than its thickness and which, in this embodiment, is a flat bar having rounded edges.
The spacing between the walls 12 and 13 is generally less than the width of the member 1 5 though greater than its thickness except at a level near the top of the walls where rounded recesses 16 and 1 7 are provided in the respective walls 12 and 13 and the distance between the walls is increased to that of the width of the member 1 5.
Above the level of the recesses the wall spacing is reduced by smooth bulbous tops provided on the walls 12 and 13.
With this wall formation, a sheet 20 of flexible material can be simply laid across the tops of the walls and the member 1 5 dropped between the walls, as shown in Fig. 1, taking the sheet 20 with it. Either edge of the member 1 5 can then be fitted into the recess 16 or 1 7 in the adjacent wall and tension on the sheet at the other side will lift the other edge of the member into its recess to achieve the situation shown in Fig. 2. It should be noted that the movement of the member 1 5 while the second edge is being located in its groove is a pivoting movement in the recess in which the first edge is located, and the second edge has to force its way into its recess past the lower edge of the recess.
In the position of Fig. 2 it can be seen that the sheet is securely trapped between the member 15 and the walls and that any tension on the sheet merely serves to increase the forces securing the sheet. To free the sheet it is only necessary to push down one edge of the member 1 5 and thus return to the position of Fig. 1.
Claims
