Abstract

A combined step-ladder and chair comprises a first ladder portion (1) which has a first support (21) and a second support (23). The second support is movable relative to the first ladder portion (1) between a first position in which it forms a step ladder therewith, and a second position in which it forms the back of a chair, the seat of which is supported by the first support. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Combined step-ladder and chair This invention relates to a combined step-ladder and chair.
According to the present invention there is provided a combined step-ladder and chair comprising a first ladder portion having afirstsupport, and a second supportwhich ismoveablerelativetothefirstladder portion between a first position in which it forms a step-ladder with the first ladder portion, and a second position in which it forms the back of a chair, the seat ofwhich is supported bythefirst ladder portion.
Preferably, the second support has rigidlyjoined thereto a second ladder portion which forms a linear extension ofthefirst ladder portion when the second support is in the first position. Bythis arrangement, extra height may be achieved over and above the height of the seat ofthe chair by converting the combined ladder and chair into a step-ladder position.
Preferably, the seat is partly formed by a tread of the first ladder portion and partly by a tread ofthe second ladder portion.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the second ladder portion is hingedly connected to the first ladder portion. In the arrangement in which the seat ofthe chair is formed partly by a tread on the first ladder portion and partly by a tread on the second ladder portion, the hinged connection is preferably between the said two treads.
The second ladder portion preferably has an uppermost tread which abuts againstthefirst ladder portion when in the second position, thus defining the limit of travel ofthe second ladder portion relative to the first ladder portion.
A combined step-ladder and chair according to the present invention are now described, byway of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a combined ladder and chair in a first position for use as a step-ladder, and Figure 2 shows the combined ladder and chair of Figure 1 in a second position, for use as a chair.
Referring to the drawings, a combined step-ladder and chair comprises a first ladder portion shown generallyat 1 and asecond ladder portion shown generally at 11. The first ladder portion 1 is formed from side pieces 3 and 5, and treads 7 and 9 which extend between the side pieces. Similarly, thesecond ladder portion 11 is formed from side pieces 13 and 15, between which extend treads 17 and 19.
The first ladder portion 1 is supported by a first support, comprising a pair of legs 21. The second ladder portion 11 is supported by a second support, comprising a further pair of legs 23 between which extend braces 25. The treads and the braces are fixed to the side pieces and legs respectively by means of screws, although any other suitable fixing means could, of course, be used.
The second ladder portion is connected to thefirst ladder portion by means of hinges 27 between the tread 9 on the first ladder portion and the tread 17 on the second ladder portion.
It will be seen that the combined ladder and chair shown in the drawings can adopt either a first position (Fig. 1) in which it is suitable for use as a step-ladder, or a second position (Fig. 2) in which the second support forms the back of the chair. In the second position, the seat of the chair is formed partly by the tread 9 ofthe first ladder portion 1 and partly by the tread 17 of the second ladder portion 11. The limit of movement of the second ladder portion relative to the first ladder portion is defined bytheabutmentofthe uppermost tread 19 againsttheside pieces 3 and 5.
Although the combined ladder and chair shown in Figures 1 and 2 is of a timber construction, it will be appreciated thattheother materials, for example metal, could be used.
1. A combined step-ladder and chair comprising a first ladder portion having a first support, and a second support which is moveable relative to the first ladder portion between a first position in which it forms a step-ladderwith thefirst ladder portion, and a second position in which it forms the back of a chair, the seat of which is supported by the first support.
2. A combined step-ladder and chair according to claim 1 wherein the second support has rigidly joined thereto a second ladder portion which forms a linear extension ofthefirst ladder portion when the second support is in the first position.
3. Acombined step-ladder and chair according to claim 2 wherein the second ladder portion is hingedly connected to the first ladder portion.
4. A combined step-ladder and chair according to claim 3 wherein the seat is partly formed by a tread of the first ladder portion and partly by a tread ofthe second ladder portion.
5. A combined step-ladder and chair according to claim 4wherein the hinged connection is between the said two treads.
6. A combined step-ladder and chair according to any of claims 2 to 5, wherein the second ladder portion has an uppermosttread which abuts againstthefirst ladder portion when in the second position, thus defining the limit oftravel ofthe second ladder portion relative to the first ladder portion.
7. Acombined step-ladder and chair substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
