Abstract
A floor type safe for embedding in a concrete floor (4) and in which the top plate (1) of the safe container is provided with an upstanding tubular shroud (3) for access to an opening (10) in the top plate (1), has the opening (10) formed for direct locking engagement of the closure (2) with it. The shroud (3) consists of a length of plain tube welded or otherwise secured or located on the top plate (1). The top plate is secured by lugs 21 which are passed through recesses 11 and by the bolt 22 of a lock 20. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Floor type safe
This invention relates to floor type safes of the kind in which the container of the safe is embedded in position of use in a concrete floor below floor level, authorised access being gained to the container interior via a tubular member or shroud upstanding from the top plate ofthe container and after removal of a lockable closure.
Hitherto in such safes the closure has had a locking engagement with the interior ofthetubular part or shroud entailing appropriate internal formation of the latter and the object of this invention is to provide a simplified arrangement whereby manufacturing costs are reduced. Practical advantages in this respectwill be apparent from the fol lowing disclosure.
According to this invention a floor type safe of the kind referred to is characterised by the top plate ofthe safe container within the tubular part or shroud thereto being provided with an opening formed for direct locking engagement of the closure therewith.
Practical examples of the relevant part ofthe safe are shown in the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE lisa sectional elevation of the upper part of the safe,
FIGURE 2 is a plan view,
FIGURE 3 is a plan view of an alternative arrangement, and
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the closureforthe arrangement of FIGURE 3.
Referring to FIGURES 1 and 2, the opening 1 0forth removable and lockable closure 2 is formed directly in the top plate 1 ofthe container or body of the safe and provides a pair of diametrically opposite recesses 11.
On initially inserting the underpart of the closure 2 in the opening, the fixed lugs 21 of the closure 2 are first passed through the recesses 11 and the closure 2 given a part turn so that the lugs 21 retentively engage underthetop plate 1 and the bolt (or bolt extension 22 as shown) enters one ofthe recesses 11 by appropriate operation of the lock 20 to prevent rotation of the closure 2. On retraction ofthe bolt extension 22 the closure 2 can be turned backto re-align the lugs 21 with the recesses 11 and so enable the unlocked closure 2 to be lifted out of the upstanding tubular shroud 3 by the handle 23.
The number of recesses 11 and lugs 21 can be varied according to requirement (e.g. three, four or more) and the lugs 21 can be of any suitable form or cross-section (e.g. of round, square, rectangu lar or other section).
The opening 10 can be readily formed in the top plate 1 such as by flame cutting or other suitable procedure, e.g. numerically controlled milling, whilst the shroud 3 can be a length of plain tube welded or otherwise secured at its base to the top plate 1 or located thereon concentrically about the opening 10.
The shroud 3 need only be of sufficient wall thickness and strength to support surrounding floor concrete 4 during application and setting of the latter on installation of the safe. The shroud 3 can be of a material other than metal such as plastic material ora combination of such materials. Thus a short metal tube or ring may be welded to the top plate and receive a plastic upper tube secured to it or located about it or within it, the securing or locating of the tube again being sufficient for concrete support during setting.
In particular the use and expense of a thick walled shroud having a gapped orotherwiseformed ledge machined within itto receive the closure is avoided with consequent reduction in manufacturing costs.
Furthermore, the shroud 3 now forms no part of the closable interior of the safe.
In FIGURES 3 and 4the invention is shown applied to an alternative arrangement of closure retention in which the opening 100 in the top plate 1 is of irregular configuration and a flanged underpart 200 ofthe cloure 2 is of corresponding or co-operating configuration for reception by the opening 100.
After initial insertion the closure 2 is given a part turn whereby the flange 200 engagesunderthe top plate 1 and the closure 2 is then locked against rotation.
As before the opening 100 can be conveniently formed in the top plate 1 byflamecutting or other procedure and the shroud 3 again simply consists of a length of plain tube.
1. A floor type safe ofthe kind referred to characterised bythat part of the top plate of the safe within the upstanding tubular part or shroud being provided with an opening formed for direct locking engagement of the closure therewith, the interior of the upstanding tubular part or shroud thus forming no part ofthe closable interior of the safe container but permitting passage oftheclosureforsaid locking engagementwith the opening and unlocking and removal therefrom as well as providing access to the interior of the safe container on removal of the closure.
2. Afloortypesafe accordingtoclaim 1 wherein the upstanding tubular part or shroud consists of a length of plain tube welded or otherwise secured at its base to the top plate of the safe container or located thereon abouttheopening inthetop plate.
3. Afloortype safe according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the wall thickness and strength of the upstanding tubular part or shroud is sufficient to support surrounding floor concrete during application and setting of the latter on installation of the safe.
4. Afloortype safe according to any ofthe preceding claims wherein the upstanding tubular part or shroud and mounting thereof on the top plate is of metal, plastic or other suitable material or a combination of such materials.
5. Afloortypesafe according to any ofthe preceding claims wherein the top plate ofthe safe container has a short tube or ring welded or otherwise secured to it about the opening, which shorttube or ring receives secured or located about it or within it the tubularpartorshroud.
6. Afloortype safe according to any of the
