Pen and pencil trays; blotting-appliances.-A measuring rule comprises an elongated strip of metal or the equivalent bent upon itself along its length to form upper and lower parts b, a, Fig. 1, between which a slip c of card, celluloid, &c. is inserted 'to show through a slot or slots f in one or both parts a, b. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which one or both of the parts a, b is trough-shaped, the slip c being retained as shown, or pressed into the trough frictionally held. The trough may form a pen or pencil rest, and one or both of its sides may be graduated. In another modification both longitudinal edges of the rule are bent downwardly so that the rule forms an inverted U, the slip being placed between the upper and lower parts or held at the top of the U. The meeting edges e of the scale shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may be soldered or otherwise joined, or they may be free and used to clamp a pad m of blotting paper &c., the upper free edge being, if desired, turned inwardly as shown at l, Fig. 4. The edge n may be flattened to form a paper knife.
