Description
SPECIFICATION
Scaffold structure
This invention relates to scaffold structure of the kind consisting of a ladder or ladder-like mast arranged to assume a substantially upright position when in use adjacent a wall or similar surface, the ladder or mast carrying a working platform which can be moved up or down the ladder and locked in a required position of use to provide convenient support for a person together with tools etc., operating from the ladder. Such a scaffold structure or "climber" is set forth in the specification of my British Patent No. 1,314,696.
The object of the invention is to provide an extendible arrangement of such scaffold structure to facilitate its use especially when access to a high position is required.
According to this invention, scaffold structure of the kind referred to is characterisd by the ladder or ladder-like mast consisting of at least two relatively slidable sections for length or height extension, the platform having guide means adapted for guiding engagement with one section or the other of the extended ladder or mast, i.e. with a change over action and according to the direction of movement of the platform up or down the ladder or mast.
A practical example of the scaffold structure together with modifications is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the platform on the extended ladder or mast,
Figure 2 is a sectional plan view taken on the line ll-ll of Fig. 1,
Figures 3 to 5 are sectional plan views similar to Fig. 2 but each showing a modification, and
Figure 6 is a sectional plan view showing a further development,
Like parts are referred to by the same or similar reference numerals throughout the drawings.
The ladder or ladder-like mast 1 is shown comprising a main or lower section 10 and a relatively slidable extension section 11 in a similar manner to an extendible ladder.
When in use the ladder or mast 1 is supported in a substantially vertical position spaced from a wall W or other generally upright surface or the like to which access is required, i.e. by means of a stand off support or spreader 1 2 carried by the upper end of the extension 11 whilst the lower section 10 is shown provided with outwardly splayed legs 1 4 for stability.
In the manner described in my aforesaid prior patent, the platform 2 is arranged to be moved up or down the ladder 1 by a person ascending or descending it, the platform 2 being attached by a strap indicated at 21 and which passes over the shoulders and behind the neck of the person so that the suspended platform moves with him as he climbs up or down the ladder 1.
Catch mechanism 3 is provided for engaging a rung 1 3 of the ladder 1 in order to lock the platform 2 at a required position of use, the catch mechanism 3 being releasable by a lever 30 operable by the person on the ladder 1 when it is required to move up or down the ladder. The particular action of the catch mechanism 3 shown is described later.
The platform 2 is shown positioned on the inner side of the ladder 1, i.e. adjacent the wall W so that the person works with his back to the ladder 1 over the safety rail 29.
Having regard to the extendible arrangement of the ladder 1 and in accordance with this invention the platform 2 is provided with guide means 20 arranged to engage either the lower section 10 or the extension section 11 or both of them in the region where they overlap and with a change over action as the platform 2 is moved up or down the ladder 1 so that firm location of the platform 2 is maintained as it passes from one ladder section to the other.
Referring to Fig. 1 the upper and lower parts of the platform 2 are rigidly provided with a frame 22 of the guide means 20 which frames 22 embrace the ladder 1, each frame 22 carrying three pairs of spaced apart rollers 23, 24, 25 rotatable about respective spaced apart transverse axes, the mid pair of rollers 24 together with the outer pair 23 of the lower frame 22 being shown engaging the stiles 100 of the lower ladder section 10 by rolling contact with opposite side edges of the stiles 100. When the platform 2 is fully on the extension section 11, the inner pair of rollers 25 and the mid pair 24 engage the stiles 110 in a similar manner.
As also shown in the case of the upper frame 22, the mid pair of rollers 24 run between the adjacent edges of the stiles 100, 110 of the overlapping ladder sections 10, 11 with the outer and inner pairs 23, 25 contacting outer edges of respective stiles 100, 110.
As will be appreciated the platform 2 is securely and safely guided for smooth movement up and down the extended ladder 1 with the guide rollers 23, 24, 25 able to readily negotiate the region of overlap of the sections 10, 11.
In order to guide the pair of rollers 23, 24, 25 as they move into and out of the region of overlap, the adjacent ends of the stiles 100, 110 are shown of rounded form for guiding the rollers and avoiding possible jamming abutment.
The arrangement of the guide rollers 24, 25 of the upper or lower frame 22 is shown in Fig. 2, i.e. where the ladder sections 10, 11 are of the same width with their stiles 100, 110 aligned with one another, retaining members 1 5 e.g. from the extension section 11 slidably engaging respective grooves 1 6 or other suitable guideways in the stiles 100 of the lower section 10.
Referring to Figs. 3 to 5 the arrangement of frames 22 and guide rollers 23, 24, 25 are shown to suit alternative arrangements of extendible ladder, i.e. where a narrower extension section 11 is slidable between the stiles 100 of the lower section 10 (Fig. 3),.or where the stiles 100, 110 are of interfitting I-section (Fig. 4) or are of interfitting channel section (Fig. 5). In Fig. 3 the inner rollers 23 contact track members 11 3 on the stiles 110 of the extension section 11.
In the above described arrangements the outer and inner pairs of rollers 23, 25 may be carried by transverse shafts 26 but the mid pair 24 require to be mounted by stub shafts 27 or similar support in view of intervening ladder structure.
In Fig. 6 outer or extended side structure 220 of the roller frame is shown for providing in particular adequate stub axle support at 27 for the mid rollers 24 whilst in this Figure the rollers 23, 24, 25 are also shown flanged at 230, 240 and 250 to maintain clearance between the ladder stiles 100, 110 and adjacent side members of the frame 22.
The upper and lower frames 22 should be rigidly secured to the platform 2 and are also shown braced at 28 from one another. The base 200 of the platform 2 may be foldable and is mounted from the upper frame 22 by side members 210 with attachment to the lower frame 22.
The rollers 23, 24, 25 may lie in the same plane in the frames 22 as shown or may lie in different planes and/or may be of different diameter. Instead of rollers, guide members carried by the frames 22 and having sliding contact with the stiles 100, 110 may be employed.
Having regard to the off set of the extension section 11 from the lower section 10, the catch mechanism 3 (Fig. 1) is shown of suitable form for engagement with a rung 1 3 of one or the other of the sections 10, 11.
Preferably a pair of catch members or hooks 33 are provided each pivotally mounted by a cranked arm 31 from the upper roller frame 22 e.g. from the outer roller shaft 26 of the latter and fast with a suitably formed lower part 300 of the release lever 30. The arrangement is such that the offset weight of the lever 30 causes it to swing away from the ladder for bringing each hook 33 in engagement with a rung 1 3 as shown in the dotted line position, the lever 30 being moved to the position shown in full for release of the hooks 33 from a rung 1 3 of either section 10 or 11 when it is required to move the platform 2 up or down the ladder 1.Such tendency of the hooks 33 to otherwise automatically engage a rung 1 3 largely avoids inadvertent descent of the platform 2 whilst the catch mechanism 3 may be spring loaded for the purpose.
The upper part of each catch member or hook 33 is shown provided with an inclined deflecting portion or head 330 for deflecting it clear of a rung 1 3 during upward movement of the platform and thus avoid or minimise hindrance of such movement.
In use the ladder 1 can be extended to a required height up a wall or the like and the platform 2 readily operated to any position regardless of the extension effected. This facilitates handling and positioning of the ladder compared with the use of a long ladder or mast or a rigid assembly thereof.
The invention is applicable to extendible ladder or mast assemblies having more than two relatively slidable sections and with appropriate guide roller or similar arrangements.
