Abstract

A packaged food service case comprises a tray base (1), one or more intermediate tray decks (2) and a transparent cover (3) which fit together as a tier, the tray decks and cover interchangeably fitting on the tray base or on any intermediate tray deck. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Food service case This invention relates to food service cases for holding on display, and heating if required, food products ready for human consumption such as at snack counters or refreshment bars.
According to the invention, a food service case comprises a tray base, to hold food packages, a transparent cover, fitting on to the tray base, and one or more intermediate tray decks the lower and upper side borders of which are shaped respectively to fit on the tray base and be fitted by the cover, so that a closed case may be assembled from a tray base, one or more intermediate tray decks and a cover superposed as a tier.
Preferably the tray decks each have a transparent surrounding side wall and incorporate an electrical heater tray with a thermal insulated underside so that hot food can be held on display on a tray deck with cold food held on display or stored in the tray base.
Each tray deck may have a side wall part formed as hinged or sliding door or flaps for service access to food on a tray beneath, without removal of the cover.
The invention is illustrated by way of example on the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a food service case according to the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view of the tray base and cover only, and Figures 3 and 4 are respectively a diagrammatic side elevation and end elevation to show the construction of the case.
The food service case shown has a tray base 1, an intermediate tray deck 2 and a transparent cover 3.
The deck 2 has an upper tray 4 in which is mounted, above a layer of thermal insulation 5, an electrical heater (not shown) which may be a conventional resistance heater or a high current, low voltage, heater with a transformer for mains supply.
The heating element may be embedded in a heat resistant, electrical insulating, plastics material, such as a polycarbonate, or in a ceramic foil, sheet or bed.
A metal plate may be provided above or below the element, to equalise the temperature, and the underside of the tray is thermally insulated to prevent downward transmission of heat.
Below the tray 4, the deck has a transparent side wall 6 which corresponds to the side wall 8 of the cover 3 so that either will fit on the base 1.
The base, deck and cover components may be made by vacuum forming or blow-moulding from a plastics material such as ABS, polystyrene, polyethylene or polycarbonate.
A part of the deck wall may be formed as hinged flap 9, located to the rear in use, for service access to food on a tray beneath.
More than one intermediate tray deck may be provided in a service case tier.
The service case of the invention is particularly, but not exciusively, suitable for packaged food products which are heated in package before service.
1. A food service case comprising a tray base, to hold food packages, a transparent cover, fitting on the tray base, and one or more intermediate tray decks the lower and upper side borders of which are shaped respectively to fit on the tray base and be fitted by the cover, so that a closed case may be assembled from a tray base, one or more intermediate tray decks and a cover superposed as a tier.
2. A food service case according to claim 1, in which each tray deck has a transparent surrounding side wall and an electrical heater tray with a thermal insulated underside.
3. A food service case according to claim 1 or 2, in which each tray deck has a sidewall part formed as a service access door or flap.
4. A food service case substantially as described and shown by the accompanying drawing.
