Abstract

A packaged food product consists of a portion of food (1), having an edible case (2) with sealed ends (3), enclosed in a pouch (4) of flexible sheet material, non-adherent to the food product and resistant to 100 DEG C, the pouch having opening means to reveal the food product at one end for consumption while in hand. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Packaged food product This invention relates to packaged food products for human consumption and provides food prepared and wrapped in a form in which it can be heated, if desired, and then consumed from the package held in the hand.
According to the invention, a packaged food product, for human consumption and prepared for heating in the package, consists of a portion of food comprising an edible case and a filling therein, the portion being parted from a length of filled casing, the case ends of each portion being sealed, the package consisting of an enclosure of flexible sheet plastics material non-adherent to the food and resistant to a temperature of 1 000C without deg radation, and the enclosure being sealed and having means to facilitate transverse opening to reveal an end of the food portion for consumption progressively with the package in hand.
The preferred method of sealing the case ends is by transverse flattening and cutting of a length of filled casing at food-portion length intervals, the flattening comprising crimping by indentation of longitudinally corrugated bands and cutting across the middle of the crimping to leave a sealed margin at each end of each food portion.
The filling in the casing may be extruded into or on to a length of edible casing, as a sleeve or as a band which is folded to form a sleeve, and preferably the filling is pre-divided into portions spaced along the casing so that between the portions the casing can be flattened and sealed without the interposition or squeezing-out of filling.
The enclosure material is a heat-resistant plastics material of food-contact quality, with or without a metal foil interleaf, complying with Food Regulations such as, in the United Kingdom, F & DA 21 CFR 177: 1390. Suitable materials are polyethylene film with an interleaf of nylon, polyester, polyvinyldichloride or aluminium foil. A particularly suitable material is "STERILITE" (Trade Mark) marketed by DRG (U.K) Limited and which is a triple lamination of polyester, aluminium foil and polyolefin film.
A preferred enclosure is made from faceoppposed strips of the plastics material formed into pouches by being welded together by their margins around each food portion.
Pouches may first be made with one end open for insertion of a food portion after which the open end is sealed by welding.
Alternatively, food portions may be laid at intervals on one strip, the other strip then being superposed and the two strips welded together by framewelding around each food portion.
The means to facilitate opening of the package may be a weakened tear line or pull strip across the enclosure near one or both ends and preferably this extends peripherally so that an end part of the enclosure may be detached.
The edible case may be pastry or a pizza-type material and the filling, such as of meat or fruit, is prepared and cooked as necessary with a moisture content to suit an intended shelf life with permissible preservatives.
The invention is illustrated by way of example on the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an edible-cased food portion with crimped ends and divided from a length of similar portions.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a food portion enclosed in a sealed pouch package.
Figure 3 is a pictorial view of an opened package held in the hand.
The food portion 1 shown by Figure 1 has a pastry or pasta edible case 2, with a minced meat filling for example, having its ends crimped into longitudinal corrugations 3 close enough and tight enough to seal the case and of sufficient length to leave, when transversely cut, an adequate margin to keep the case closed to retain the filling moist.
Figure 2 shows a packaged food product consisting of a food portion, as shown by Figure 1, in a plastics pouch enclosure 4 of which the margin 5 is flattened and sealed, by thermal welding, all round the enclosed food portion. The pouch 4 has, near each end thereof, an indented and thus weakened dividing line 6 defining a pull-tear path by means of which either end of the pouch may be separated for complete removal. Instead of an indented line 6, a tear strand, of thread for example, may be used.
Figure 3 is self-explanatory.
The packaged food products of the present invention are particularly suitable for display, for hot or cold service, at snack counters or refreshment bars.
For hot service the complete package is placed in a heater so that the food portion is heated within its wrapping. The oval 7 indicates a printing area for description and indentificaton of the product.
