Abstract

The housing comprises a front cover (10) and a rear substantially planar cover (15). The rear cover (15) has four forwardly projecting pins (16) which are received in respective apertures (14) or recesses in the front cover (10) as a press fit enabling automatic machine assembly of the two covers. An aperture 12 for an LCD and a recess 13 for a battery are provided. A printed circuit board 18 may be located on the pins 16 or provided on the back cover 15. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION LCD module housing for a timepiece This invention relates to an LCD module housing for a timepiece, particularly for a wrist watch.
Conventional LCD modules have a two part housing which accommodates inter alia the LCD and battery. The two parts of the housing are fixed together by screws. The manual process of inserting and tightening the screws is both tedious and time consuming.
The invention provides an LCD module housing for a timepiece, comprising a front cover having a window for viewing an LCD accommodated in use in the housing and a back cover, wherein one of the front and back covers is provided with three or more apertures or recesses arranged to receive as a press-fit respective pins integral with the other of the front and back covers to fasten the front and back covers together.
Hence, the front and back covers can be pressed together enabling automatic machine assembly rather than the tedious and time consuming manual process of inserting and tightening screws. Also, costs can be reduced with the absence of screws.
Preferred and optional features of the invention are set forth in claims 2 and 3.
The invention also provides an LCD module including such a housing and a watch with such a module.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure lisa front perspective view of the back cover of one embodiment of an LCD module housing according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the front cover.
Referring to the drawings, the LCD module housing shown therein is intended for a wrist watch and includes a front cover 10 provided with a window 11 for viewing an LCD (not shown) accommodated in rectangular recess 12, a circular recess 13 for accommodating a battery (not shown) and four apertures 14. Each aperture has a diameter of approximately 1 mm and a length of approximately 3.5 mm and has a smooth non-threaded bore which is slightly concave in longitudinal section.
The LCD module housing also includes a substantially planar back cover 15 having four integral forwardly projecting pins 16 which can be press fitted into the apertures 14 to releasably fasten the front and rear covers together. The back cover 15 also has an opening 17 which communicates with the recess 13 in the front cover to allow the battery to be changed without separating the covers 10 and 15.
A printed circuit board 18 is mounted on the pins 16 and electrical connectors can be supported in slots 19.
The two covers 19 and 15 can be easily separated with a screwdriver for the purposes of servicing.
Blind recesses could be provided instead of the aperture 14.
The printed circuit could be provided on the back cover rather than on a separate board.
1. An LCD module housing for a timepiece, comprising a front cover having a window for viewing an LCD accommocdated in use in the housing and a back cover, wherein one of the front and back covers is provided with three or more apertures or recesses arranged to receive as a press-fit respective pins integral with the other of the front and back covers to fasten the front and back covers together.
2. The housing of claim 1 wherein the apertures or recesses are provided in the front cover and each has a length substantially greater than the maximum cross-sectional dimension.
3. The housing of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the front cover has a recess for accommodating a battery and the rear cover has an opening communicating with the battery receiving recess of the front cover.
4. An LCD module housing substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
5. An LCD module for a timepiece having a housing according to any one of the preceding claims.
6. Awatch comprising the LCD module of claim 5.
