Abstract
There is no satisfactory way of obtaining tissue paper of relatively high tensile strength without losing the soft handle of the tissue. It has been discovered that the tensile strength of tissue paper can be improved without loss of handle if a composition comprising an imidazolinium dicarboxylate derivative and isopropanol is applied to the stock or wet web during the paper making process.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Manufacture of paper
This invention relates to a composition for use in the manufacture of paper, more particularly the manufacture of tissue paper.
One of the obvious problems with paper tissue is its poor tensile strength. This can manifest itself
in undesirable ways, for example a paper tissue handkerchief may tear or fall apart in use. Attempts
have been made to improve the strength of paper tissue, but any increase in tensile strength has only
been obtained at the expense of the handle of the tissue and in particular the degree of softness.
Similarly attempts to improve the softness of tissue paper have resulted in a reduction of tensile strength.
It is one of the objects of the invention to improve the tensile strength of tissue paper while maintaining a good degree of softness.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a composition for use in the manufacture of tissue paper comprising an imidazolinium dicarboxylate derivative and an alcohol, said composition having a viscosity which is sufficiently low to permit it to be sprayed.
In another aspect of the invention there is provided a process for the manufacture of paper wherein prior to drying of the web, a composition as defined above is sprayed onto the said web.
The use of the composition of the invention in the manufacture of paper and particularly tissue paper has the effect of improving the tensile strength without any significant deterioration in softness.
An improvement in softness together with an increase in tensile strength can be obtained if the composition also contains a quaternary ammonium compound.
The composition modified by the addition of a quaternary ammonium compound can be applied to a web by spraying as in the case of the unmodified composition or it can be added to the stock for forming the web. When used in the latter manner the requirement for low viscosity is not essential.
The imidazolinium dicarboxylate derivative of the invention is preferably based on a fatty acid which may advantageously be a straight or branched chain fatty acid from 6 to 20 carbons. Particularly preferred fatty acids are caprylic and oleic acids. The active content of the composition is preferably in the range from 1 0%-60%. The alcohol is preferably isopropanol.
The quaternary ammonium compound is preferably one which is known for use as a fabric conditioner for example dimethyl dihydrogenated tallow ammonium chloride. The amount of quaternary ammonium compound is preferably from 30 to 70% by volume of the total composition.
The amount of composition applied to the web during paper manufacture depends on the properties of strength and softness required, the kind of paper and the particular formulation of the composition being applied. When being sprayed onto the web the composition may be applied at from 2 to 5 kilos/tonne preferably 3 kilos/tonne. When added to the web forming stock application of from 2 to 6 kilos/tonne (of stock) may be made, preferably 4 kilos/tonne.
The viscosity of the composition can be appropriately adjusted by a suitable additive, for example isopropanol. Commercially available imidazolinium derivatives frequently contain sodium chloride which tends to increase viscosity. Thus the viscosity of the composition of the invention can be adjusted to the required level by using an imidazolinium derivative which is substantially free of sodium chloride.
The following examples further illustrate the invention.
Example I
A composition was prepared containing the following constituents:
90 parts Oleic imidazolinium ) commercially available dicarboxylate derivative | as Rexoteric XOO-30 10 parts Isopropanol The composition was sprayed onto the web in a paper making machine just prior to the drier at the rate of 3 kilos/tonne. The results and comparison trials without using the composition are shown in the following table 1.

The softness figures were obtained by measurement with a Thwing Albert Handle-O-Meter on a resistance method which indicates the lower the figure produced the softer the product.
Example II
The composition of Example I was modified by the addition of dimethyl dihydrogenated tallow ammonium chloride. The resultant composition was added in Trial 3 by spraying onto the web at the rate of 3 kilos per tonne whilst for Trial 4 the composition was added to paper making stock at the rate of 4 kilos per tonne.
The effect on paper made under trials 3 and 4 is shown in the following Table 2.
