Abstract

A body member for a quick release coupling of the kind in which the body member has a bore with an internal surface tapering to have a larger diameter inwardly of the entrance to the bore to provide a camming surface for a tube-gripping collet, is formed of two portions (31, 32) moulded of plastics material in a plane transversely of the bore through the largest diameter portion, the two parts being ultrasonically welded to form a unitary structure. The ultrasonic welding is preferably effected between axially facing surfaces, a ridge or projection (39) on one of these surfaces providing the weld material. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Quick release tube coupling This invention relates to quick release tube couplings of the kind (referred to hereinafter as the "kind described") having a collet with resilient arms arranged to co-operate with a cam surface on a member surrounding the collet, this cam surface being constituted by an internal surface tapering to a smaller diameter in one axial direction and engaging the arms so that the arms are forced radially inwardly by axial movement in this direction which is the direction to withdraw the tube from the coupling and wherein the collet has its arms spaced apart in the circumferential direction such that, in the absence of any tube within the collet, the arms can move radially inwardly to permit of the collet being withdrawn from said member by axial movement in said one direction.
One such coupling of this kind is described and claimed in British Patent Specification No.
1 520742. This arrangement in which the collet, in the absence of the tube, can be withdrawn from the coupling enables the body member to be a unitary structure yet permits of the collet being removed and hence enables an O-ring or like sealing member inside the coupling to be replaced.
Heretofore it has been the practice to make the body members of such couplings out of metal. It is an object of the present invention to provide a form of construction which enables the body member to be made out of a plastics material. The collet itself can be made out of plastics material, possibly with a stainless steel insert, as is described for example in British Patent Specification No. 1573757. A coupling formed of plastics material is particularly desirable for use for example in the handling of foodstuffs and beverages.
Heretofore it has not been possible to mould a body member for such a coupling out of plastics material with the required degree of accuracy necessary for making an effective coupling. The reason for this is that the body member essentially has a through bore which is necessarily narrower at its two ends than in the centre part. Between the centre part of the body member and one end of the bore there must be at least one shoulder to provide a support for a resilient seal member, e.g.
an O-ring, into which the tube extends when put into the body member from the other end. The tube itself normally abuts against this shoulder or against another abutment. From the shoulder towards said other end, there is the cam surface which has to taper to a narrower diameter in the direction towards said other end.
According to one aspect of the present invention, the body member for a coupling of the kind described comprises two portions moulded of plastics material to abut one another in a plane transversely of the bore through the largest diameter portion of the internal bore of the assembled body member, the two parts being ultrasonically welded to form a unitary structure.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a method of making a body member for a coupling of the kind described comprises forming first and second portions of the body member each having a bore therethrough, assembling the two parts together with the largest diameter portion of the bore in the first portion adjacent the largest diameter portion of the bore in the second portion, and ultrasonically welding the two parts together to form a unitary structure with the joint extending transversely of the bore through the structure in the region of the largest diameter of that bore.
The following is a description of two embodiments of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which:~ Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through part of a body member for a coupling formed in two parts with the two parts shown spaced apart before assembly; and Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a second form of construction.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown a fi-rst portion 10, referred to as a cap, and part of a second portion 11, referred to as the body portion, which two portions are to be joined together to form a body member for a coupling of the kind described. The two portions 10, 1 1 constitute the body member of a quick release tube coupling of the kind described in the aforementioned Specification No. 1520742. The collet may be formed of plastics material, possibly with a stainless steel insert, as described in the specification of British Patent No. 1573757. This collet is inserted into the coupling from the righthand end of the cap member 10 of Figure 1, the collet arms being movable radially inwardly sufficiently far to permit of insertion through the relatively narrow diameter portion 12 of the cap member.These collet arms have bearing portions which engage the tapered surface 13 of the cap member so that, after insertion, outward pull on the collet causes the collet arms to be forced radially inwardly to grip a tube passing through the collet. The tube is inserted into the coupling through the right-hand end of the member 10 of Figure 1 and abuts against a shoulder 15 in the body portion 11. A resilient O-ring is provided in this body portion, the tube when inserted passing through the O-ring which is thus supported also by the shoulder 15.
The present invention is concerned more particularly with the construction of the body of the coupling. It will be seen that each of the two parts 10, 1 1 is shaped so that it is of annular form with the largest diameter portion of the bore at one end of the part. Thus each of these parts can be readily moulded in plastics material conveniently nylon or an acetyl copolymer such as that sold under the trade name Kemetal using conventional moulding techniques with an internal member in the mould dimensioned exactly to define the required shaping and dimensions of the internal bore. In each portion, the internal member of the mould can be withdrawn from one end of the mould after the plastics material has been shaped between internal and external mould members. With this technique, each of these two parts can thus be moulded accurately out of plastics material.The two parts 10, 11 of the coupling body are then fitted together, the cap 10 having an annular spigot portion 17 which fits within the largest internal diameter part 18 of the body portion 11 to locate the bores in the two parts in alignment. The outer part 19 of the body portion 11 embraces the spigot portion 17 of the cap and abuts against a shoulder 20 on the cap but is initially slightly spaced away therefrom by an annular axially extending ridge 21. This ridge provides the material required for welding the two parts 10, 1 1 together by ultrasonic welding. This welding is effected by putting the parts together and applying ultrasonic vibrations to one part, e.g.
the cap. The ultrasonic welding results in the two parts being united to form a unitary body structure which has internal dimensions exactly determined during the moulding operations of the two separate parts. The close fit and the welding of the parts together prevents any possibility of seepage.
Figure 2 illustrates another construction in which a cap 31 is secured to a body portion 32 by ultrasonic welding. The cap 31 has an annular spigot portion 33 which abuts against the shoulder 34 in the body portion and which defines a cam surface 35 for co-operating with a collet which is inserted into the cap portion through a relatively narrow entry bore 36. In Figure 2 an O-ring is shown at 37 abutting against a shoulder 38 in the body portion. A tube to be secured in the fitting is passed through the cap portion and into the O-ring to abut also against the shoulder 36.
In the construction of Figure 2, the body portion 32 has an annular ridge 39 forming the required weld material when pressed against a shoulder 40 on the cap portion. The two parts are secured in tight engagement by ultrasonic vibration of one of the members so as to form a tight joint between the shoulder 40 and the end surface 41 of the body portion 32.

Claims (6)

1. A body member for a coupling of the kind described comprising two portions moulded of plastics material to abut one another in a plane transversely of the bore through the largest diameter portion of the internal bore of the assembled body member, the two parts being ultrasonically welded to form a unitary structure.
2. A method of making a body member for a coupling of the kind described comprising forming first and second portions of the body member each having a bore therethrough, assembling the parts together with the largest diameter portion of the bore in the first portion adjacent the largest diameter portion of the bore in the second portion, and ultrasonically welding the two parts together to form a unitary structure with the joint extending transversely of the bore through the structure in the region of the largest diameter of that bore.
3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein one of said portions has an annular spigot extending into the bore in the other portion to abut against a shoulder in the bore and wherein, around said spigot, the two portions have axially facing surfaces to be welded together, one of which surfaces, before welding, having an annular rib to provide weld material.
4. A method of making a body member for a quick release tube coupling substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 1 or Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
5. A body member for a quick release tube coupling made by the method of any of claims 2 to4.
6. A body member for a quick release tube coupling substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 1 or Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
