Abstract

Flat articles are supported in an upright position in a filing cabinet drawer by a divider comprising a planar upright portion (11) provided with a base extending laterally in opposite directions from the bottom of the upright portion. The portion (12) of the base extending laterally in one direction comprises two superposed layers spaced apart by a distance equal to the thickness of the lower layer. The other portion (13) of the base extends laterally in the other direction and is an extension of the lower of the two layers. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A support for supporting generally flat articles.
The present invention relates to a support for supporting generally flat articles in an upright position.
One particular use is for supporting files and other papers in a drawer of a filing cabinet. Other uses such as, for example, supporting gramophone records, are of course possible but the advantages of the support are best brought out by the use in a filing cabinet drawer and it is in relation to that use that the support will be described.
Conventional supports for supporting and dividing files in filing cabinet drawers either hang from the side walls of the drawers or else use tracks on the bottom of the drawers. In either case, the drawers and/or the supports have to be specially constructed.
The present invention provides a support for supporting generally flat articles comprising a generally planar upright portion provided with a base extending laterally in opposite directions from the bottom of the upright portion.
Preferably, when used in a filing cabinet, a plurality of such supports are placed in a filing cabinet drawer so as to maintain the contents of the drawer upright.
In order that the present invention be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a perspective view of one form of support according to the present invention.
In the drawing, a support 10 comprises a generally upright portion 11, a first base portion 1 2 and a second base portion 1 3 disposed on the opposite side of the upright portion 11 to the first portion 1 2. The portions thus form an inverted generally T-shaped member which, in use is selfsupporting.
The base portion 12 or 13 may be used to receive flat articles such as files and the like and the weight of the files on the base portion 12, say, serves to retain the portion 11 upright while the base portion 1 3 assists in this as well as ensuring that the member remains upright when the files are removed. The base portions 12 and 1 3 preferably but not necessarily extend an equal amount on either side of the portion 11.
The support 10 can be made with the upright portion 11 formed by one plate attached ut its base another plate to separate it into the base portion 11 formed by one plate attached at its be made, as shown, from a continuous strip which is preferably bent to form the various portions. In this case, the base portion 1 2 consists of two thicknesses of material and the base portion 1 3 is an extension of the base portion 12.
The latter construction has the advantage when a plurality of supports are used in a filing cabinet drawer that the base portion 13 of one support 10 can be received in the fold of the portion 12 of the other support whereby to bring the two upright members together if desired.
Preferably, the supports are used in twos with one support being as shown in the drawing, i.e.
with a fold. The two thickness forming the base portion 12 are separated by a gap approximately equal to one thickness so as to receive the base portion 1 3 of the other support.
The support 10 can be made of any suitably rigid material but plastics or sheet metal, e.g.
aluminium alloy are the presentiy preferred materials. If made of plastics, the support 10 may be transparent.
Claims
