Abstract

There is described a pressurised aerosol formulation comprising permethrin, a hydrocarbon propellant, an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent in which permethrin is soluble, a sorbitol ester, a polyethylene glycol oleate and water. Formulations according to the invention may be used for pest control in the garden or in the home, and are for amateur or commercial use.

Description

SPECIFICATION Pressurised aerosol formulation This invention relates to novel pressurised aerosol formulations of permethrin.
According to our invention we provide a pressurised aerosol formulation comprising permethrin, a hydrocarbon propellant, an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent in which permethrin is soluble, a sorbitol ester, a polyethyleneglycol oleate and water.
The formulation may contain 0.01 to 1% w/w, preferably 0.05 to 0.3% w/w permethrin.
The hydrocarbon propellant may be a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons which boil below 25"C at atmospheric pressure. We prefer the propellant to have a vapour pressure of about 340-550 kPa absolute, more preferably 410-510 kPa absolute and especially 480 kPa absolute, at 25"C. We prefer the hydrocarbon propellant to contain butane. The hydrocarbon propellant may comprise from about 20 to 50, more preferably about 30 to 40% w/w of the total formulation.
The aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent may be a single compound, e.g. iso-octane, or a blend of aliphatic hydrocarbons, for example a petroleum fraction, e.g. that having a boiling point between 200 and 240"C (e.g. "Exsol 200/240" (Exsol 200/240 is a registered trademark)).
The formulation may contain from about 2 to 10% w/w of the hydrocarbon solvent.
The formulaton may contain from about 0.2 to 0.8% w/w of the sorbitol ester. We prefer the sorbitol ester to be sorbitan mono-oleate.
The formulation may contain from about 0.5 to 2.0% w/w of a polyethyleneglycol oleate. We prefer the polyethyleneglycol oleate to be polyethyleneglycol 200 oleate, that is an oleate ester in which the average molecular weight of the polymer chain is 200.
The formulation may optionally contain a pesticidal agent in addition to permethrin, for example, a fungicide, e.g. 1-allyloxy)-2,4-dichlornphenethyl] imidazole (imazalil), or an acaracide, e.g. 2,2,2,-trichloro-1 ,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethanol (dicofoi). The formulation may contain up to 0.5% w/w of an additional pesticidal agent.
The remainder of the formulation may comprise water. We prefer the water to be demineralized. The water may comprise from 40-70% w/w of the formulation.
The formulation may be prepared using conventional techniques and filled into pressurised containers in the normal way.
The formulations of the invention, and especially the formulations of the examples, are advantageous in that they tend to produce more stable emulsions, have improved spraying characteristics, improved knock down effects or other advantageous properties compared to known formulations.
Formulations according to the invention may be used for pest control in the garden or in the home, and are for amateur or commercial use. Suitable compositions may be used in the treatment or control of red spider mite, aphids, whitefly, caterpillars, ants or other common insects. Formulations of the invention may be used in the home for the treatment of houseplants.
The invention is illustrated, but in no way limited by the following Examples.
Examples Method The formulations were prepared using conventional techniques by filling sequentially into suitable containers, the demineralised water, the pesticides and emulsifiers dissolved in the hydrocarbon solvent, and after purging air from the container, the propellant, care being taken throughout the procedure to avoid mixing of the components.
