Abstract
A moulding 10 for a heel unit for a ladies shoe has an upright bore 12 and a top piece 14 with a stem 16 extending therein. The moulding 10 is held on a table 30 against a stop 31. A ram 50 pushes the top piece 14 into the moulding 10. With the pressure still applied, a gun 20 inserts a pin into the front of the moulding 10 to secure the stem 16 of the top piece 14. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Heel pieces
The invention relates to heel pieces for ladies shoes and a method and machine for their manufacture.
Heel pieces for ladies shoes comprise a moulding of plastics material, generally an injection moulding of polystyrene, and a tip or top piece, generally of rubbery material, secured thereto. The moulding usually has an upright bore extending from the "top", or part nearest the ground in wear, towards the seat of the heel. The top piece usually has a stem extending into the bore, and is secured to the moulding by means of wire staples inserted from the top. The tops of such staples are unsightly when a shoe is inspected in a shop, and the need to allow space on the top of the moulding for the insertion of the staple restricts the slimness of the top of the moulding. That is to say the need to receive a staple means that the top end of the heel must have a certain minimum thickness, and this may conflict with the demands of fashion, weight, production cycle time and price.
The invention provides a heel piece for a ladies shoe comprising a moulding of plastics material having an upright bore therein, a top piece having a stem extending into the bore and a pin entering the moulding from the front and securing the stem. The end of the pin is generally not so noticeable on the front of the moulding, and this improves the appearance of the heel.
The invention includes a method for the manufacture of such a heel piece in which the top piece is held under pressure towards the moulding and the pin is injected into the moulding while the pressure is still applied. This prevents the top piece lifting off the moulding, and so enhances the appearance and durability of the unit.
The invention also includes a machine for the manufacture of such a heel piece which comprises a table for supporting a moulding, a ram for pressing a top piece into the moulding, and a gun for injecting a pin into the front of the moulding to secure the top piece stem. The table is preferably provided with means for the adjustment of its inclination so that any heel moulding can have its bore aligned with the ram. The gun also is preferably provided with means for the adjustment of its position so that the machine can be applied to any model heel. The ram and the gun may each be pneumatic, hydraulic or mechanical, and a similar holding device for the moulding may be provided.
Drawing
Figure 1 is an elevation of a machine according to the invention.
In the middle of Figure 1 is a heel unit comprising a moulding 10 having an upright bore
12 therein and a top piece 14 with a stem 16 extending into the bore 12. A wire pin (not shown) has been injected into the moulding 10 from the front (the right hand side in the drawing) to secure the stem 1 6. The pin has been injected from a pneumatic gun 20.
The moulding 10 is hand-loaded and held throughout the operation on a table 30 against a stop 31. The stop 31 is adjustable as to its position on the table 30 by its securing screw passing through a longitudinal slot (not shown) in the table 30. The table 30 is hinged at 32 to a base 34, and contacted by a screw 36. The screw 36 is threaded in a block rotatably pinned at 38 in the base 34 for the adjustment of the inclination of the table 30. The base 34 is received and longitudinally slidable in a post 40, and its height is adjustable by means of a screw 42.
A pneumatic ram 50 is fast on a transverse member 44 projecting from the top of the post 40.
The ram 50 has a quill 52 for pressing the top piece 14 into the moulding 10.
The pneumatic gun 20 has a magazine 22 for wire pins and a mechanism 24 for controlling the insertion of pins into the moulding 10. The gun 20 is provided with adjustment means including a locking handle 26 for determining the height and inclination of the gun 20 in relation to a post 28.
In operation, the moulding 10 with the top piece 1 4 inserted is hand-held on the table 30, and the ram 50 is actuated to force the quill 52 to apply pressure to the top piece 14 to push it into the moulding 10. With the pressure still applied, the gun 20 is actuated to insert a pin into the front of the moulding 10 to secure the stem 1 6 of the top piece 14 in the bore 12 of the moulding 1 0.
1. A heel piece for a ladies shoe comprising a moulding of plastics material having an upright bore therein, a top piece having a stem extending into the bore and a pin entering the moulding from the front and securing the stem.
2. A method for the manufacture of a heel piece according to claim 1 in which the top piece is held under pressure towards the moulding and the pin is injected into the moulding while the pressure is still applied.
3. A machine for the manufacture of a heel piece according to claim 1 which comprises a table for supporting a moulding, a ram for pressing a top piece into the moulding, and a gun for injecting a pin into the front of the moulding to secure the top piece stem.
4. A machine according to claim 3 in which the table is provided with means for the adjustment of its inclination so that any heel moulding can have its bore aligned with the ram.
5. A machine according to claim 3 or claim 4 in
