Abstract

A sheet 1 comprises a strip of separable portions 2 each of which carries a marked-out pattern 6, 7 on one surface 3. An adhesive backing is provided on the other surface 4 of the sheet whereby the portions 2 can be adhered to workpieces and the marked-out patterns thereon used for subsequent work operations. The sheet 1 may be transparent. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Marking-out workpieces This invention relates to marking-out workpieces.
Normallyworkpieces are marked-outforsubse- quent work operations such as drilling and cutting on the workpiece surface using a marking instrument, the relative positions of the various drill centres, cutting lines etc being usually taken from a drawing. As will be readily understood the accuracy of such marking-out is limited by the care taken by the person doing the marking out.
The present invention provides a sheet carrying a marked-out pattern and provided with an adhesive backing whereby the sheet can be adhered to the surface of a workpiece and the marked-out pattern used for subsequent work operations.
The sheet may comprise seperable portions each of which carries a marked-out pattern and furth- ermore the sheet may be in strip or roll form.
The adhesive may be a self adhesive.
The sheet may be temporarily adhered by means of its adhesive to a carrier sheet.
Preferably the sheet is transparent.
In order that the invention may be well understood, some embodiments thereof, which are given by way of example only, will now be described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a sketch of a sheet in roll form comprising separable portions each of which carries a marked-out pattern; Figure 2 shows a portion of the sheet showing the marked-out pattern more clearly; and Figure 3 shows another sheet carrying marked-out patterns.
Referring nowto Figures 1 and 2, a sheet 1 in roli form comprises a strip of separable portions 2, each of which carries a marked-out pattern on one surface 3.
The other surface 4 is provided with an adhesive (not shown). The adhesive may be a self adhesive, and when it is, the sheet may be provided with a carrier sheet (not shown) to which the sheet is temporarily adhered by means of its adhesive, and from which the portions 2 are peelable for use.
To separate the end most portion 2 of the roll from the remainder of the roll the sheet may be cut along the boundary 5 between end most portion 2 and its adjacent portion. Alternatively, the sheet may be perforated or otherwise weakened along the boundary 5 to allow the end most portion to be torn from the remainder of the roll. Furthermore, where the sheet is carried by a carrier sheet the sheet 1 may be discontinuous at the boundaries 5 - i.e. the portions 2 may be separate from each other.
The illustrated pattern on each portion 2, as best shown in Figure 2, comprises a cut-out outline 6 with a drill centre 7 on each side and is used for adapting a facia sheet to mount a socket. The portion may also carry work instructions (not shown), for example the size of drill to be used, alignment markings (not shown) if required to allow the portion to be positioned in a desired position on the facia.
As will be appreciated, in use a portion 2 is removed from the strip 1 and adhered in position on the surface of the workpiece, for example a facia sheet, thereby accurately locating the relative positions of the drill centres 7 and cut-out outline 6 required for mounting the switch.
Figure 3 shows an alternative embodiment in which a sheet 8 carries a plurality of patterns arranged in rows and columns and each comprising, as in the first embodiment, a cut-out outline 6 with a drill centre on each side. This sheet 8 is provided with an adhesive backing and in use a pattern or a combination of patterns, for example a row or a column, is removed from the sheet and adhered to a workpiece. The sheet 8 may be provided with a carrier sheet as described above.
Whilst the sheets of the two illustrated em bodi- ments carry repetitive patterns, it is envisaged that a sheet can carry different patterns and further that a sheet or sheets could carry patterns for making a particular item, suitable for marketing with or without raw materials to hobbyists, for example model makers.
It is envisaged that the sheet carrying the markedout patterns would be clear or at least transparent.
1.A sheet carrying a marked-out pattern and provided with an adhesive backing whereby the sheet can be adhered to the surface of a workpiece and the marked-out pattern used for subsequent work operations.
2. A sheet as claimed in claim 1, comprising separable portions each of which carries a said marked-out pattern.
3. A sheet as claimed in claim 2, comprising a strip of said separable portions.
4. A sheet as claimed in claim 3, wherein said strip is in roll form.
5. A sheet as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the sheet is transparent.
6. A sheet as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein said adhesive comprises a selfadhesive.
7. A sheet as claimed in claim 6, wherein said sheet is temporarily adhered to a corner sheet by means of its adhesive.
8. A sheet substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 or Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
