Abstract

Paint stripping apparatus comprises a container (1), a support (5) adapted to support an article e.g. household door, or skirting board within the container and further adapted to be moveable to a location outside the container through a door (4) in the wall thereof, and means for causing a flow of aqueous alkali onto said article. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Paint stripping apparatus This invention relates to an apparatus for cleaning paint, varnish or othercoatings from articles and particularly but not exclusively to apparatus for removing paint or varnish from wooden articles of furniture or domestic fittings.
Corrosive liquid, cleansing agents such as aqueous caustic soda are often employedforstripping paint or varnish from wooden articles. Such cleansing agents are both dangerous and unpleasant in use since an accidental spillage may cause sever burns.
According to the present invention, paint stripping apparatus comprises a container, a support adapted to support an article within the container and further adapted to be moveabletoa location outsidethe container and meansforcausing a flow of aqueous alkali onto the said article.
Preferablythe container comprises a tank with a doorthrough which the support may be withdrawn.
The support is preferably disposed upon a carriage mechanism bywhich it may bewithdrawnfrom the container so that an article or articles may be arranged against ortaken from the support in use of the apparatus. According to a further preferred embodimentofthe invention the carriage may be provided with rollers arranged to co-operate with a trackto facilitate movement of the support. Alterna tivelythe support may be suspended from a carriage.
The container may preferably be provided with a removeable cover to that the cleansing liquid may not splash in use from the tank. Alternatively the cover may be integral with the container.
Ina preferred embodiment of the invention means may be arranged to provide one or more sprays of cleansing liquid directed towards the surface of the said article.
Preferably the means comprise a plurality of series of jets. The latter may be provided by one or more pipes each provided with a numberofdrilled holes disposed along the length thereof. Alternatively a series of nozzles may be disposed a long the length of the pipes.
Means may be arranged to provide an oscillatory flow of cleansing liquid. For example the pipes may be connected to an oscillatory drive by means of a system of levers.
The articles may comprise household doors or other articles of furniture or domestic fittings such as skirting boards.
The aqueous alkali is preferably aqueous caustic soda which is preferably heated to approximately 100"C.
A pump is provided in the apparatus to produce a spray of the liquid. A proprietory pump which is resistantto caustic alkali maybe employed.
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure lisa partially, cut away perspective view of an apparatus in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 is an end elevation of the apparatus shown in Figure 1.
The Figures show a metal tank 1 which has a generally rectangularconfiguration and which is supported upon legs 2. The legs 2 are arranged so that the base of the tankslopestowards an outlet 3 to facilitate drainage of spent cleansing liquid from the tank. The tank incorporates a permanent cover. A door4 is provided at one end ofthetank. In an alternative embodiment two interlocking doors are provided. The door may be opened to permit a wooden door 5 or similarly shaped article to be inserted into the tank. The support 5 comprises two rails 6 against which one or more doors 5 may rest.
Wheels 7 engage tracks 8 to facilitate removal of the supportfrom the tank when the door 4 is open. Two pipes 9 are provided with holes through which sprays of aqueous caustic soda are directed towardsthe door 10. In an alternative embodimentthe pipes are disposed within the tank but spaced from the walls thereof. The aqueous alkali is delivered by a proprietory alkali resistant pump (not shown).
The support may take the form ofaframeorcage.
The mechanism may comprise an extensible roller mechanism or any other means which may be wholly contained within the tank after door 4 is closed.
