Abstract

A window assembly in which a weather seal is provided between the edge of a pivoting frame 16 and a fixed outer frame 19 by a sealing strip 24 arranged to be moved into contact with the fixed frame by an elongate member, e.g. an espagnolette bolt 22, mounted on the edge of the movable frame. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Window assemblies This invention relates to a window assembly including a pivotally opening movable frame mounted in a fixed frame. More particularly, the invention relates to means for providing a weather resistant seal between a side of the movable frame and the fixed frame.
According to the invention, there is provided a window assembly incorporating means for providing a weather resistant seal between a side of a pivotally opening movable window frame and a fixed frame in which it is mounted, comprising an elongate member mounted at said side and extending longitudinally thereof, means for moving said elongate member in opposite directions transversely of its length, and a sealing strip movable by said elongate member into sealing engagement with the fixed frame.
The sealing strip may be mounted on said elongate member.
The elongate member may be an espagnolette bolt, arranged to be moved in said opposite directions as well as longitudinally to secure the movable frame in its closed position.
The movement of the elongate member in said opposite directions may be effected, for example, by cam surfaces on said member engaging formations on or associated with said movable frame and operative upon longitudinal movement of said member. Alternatively said transverse movement may be effected by cranks or the like.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, of which:~ Figure 1 is a view of a window assembly incorporating the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a window assembly comprising a fixed frame 10 and a movable frame 11. Both these frames are of timber, and the movable frame is mounted for pivoting movement about a horizontal axis 12 by two hinge assemblies 13, 14. The hinge assembly 13 is shown in greater detail in Figure 2, and comprises a member 15 secured to the stile 16 of the movable frame, the member 15 affording a pin 17 which is received within a bush 18, which bush is held to the upright 19 of the fixed frame within a supporting member 20.
Each of the stiles of the movable frame of the assembly is provided with a fastening in the form of an espagnolette bolt for holding the window in its closed position. The espagnolette bolts are movable longitudinally of the stiles of the movable frame by handles 20, 21. The espagnolette bolt of stile 16 is shown at 22 in Figure 2, and is movable longitudinally (vertically in Figure 1) within a slot 23 in the stile.
As well as being movable longitudinally, the espagnolette bolt 22 is movable in opposite directions transversely of its length, i.e. towards and away from the upright 1 9 of the fixed frame.
This movement may be effected by cam surfaces, or possibly cranks, so that the bolt 22 moves transversely out of its slot 23 as it is moved longitudinally to its position in which it locks the window in the closed position. A sealing strip 24, of plastics material, is fixed to the espagnolette bolt 22 and, as the bolt moves out of its slot 23, is urged into the sealing engagement with the upright 1 9 of the fixed frame. This condition is illustrated in Figure 2. The opposite stile of the movable frame 1 1 is similarly equipped. The sealing strip 24 is of a resilient nature, e.g. of a suitable rubber or plastics material so as to be capable of sealing effectively.
Thus, when the window is closed and the espagnolette fastening bolts moved to their position in which they hold the window closed, the sealing strips as 24 provide an effective weather resistant seal at the upright sides of the frame. It is not necessary to provide sealing formations in the fixed frame other than flat surfaces for the flexible sealing strips to engage.
Although the invention has been illustrated as applied to a window assembly in which the fixed frame is pivoted about a central horizontal axis, it will be appreciated that it is applicable generally to the weather sealing or pivotally opening windows.
As an alternative to the use of a sealing strip 24 fixed to the espagnolette bolt 22, a flexible sealing strip could be fixed to the frame member 16 and arranged to be displaced or deflected by the bolt 22 sealingly to engage the fixed frame member 19.
