Abstract
211,207. Marks, E. C. R., (Locomotive Firebox Co.). Nov. 13, 1922. Steam generators.-Boiler plates, water circulating elements for use in locomotive fire boxes, &c., are flanged by clamping the edge of the sheet between fixed and movable rails and pulling the body of the sheet over to the required angle. A triangular water-circulating element or thermic syphon 2 of the type described in Specification 137,093, [Class 123 (ii), Steam generators], is provided with a series of holes through which bolts 13 are passed to secure a spacing block 14 and a pair of radius bars 15, 16. The edge of the sheet to be flanged first is placed between a fixed rail 6 and a movable rail 7, gauge pins 9 passing through perforated ears 8 in the sheet so as to fix its position. The rail 7, which engages a recess 12 in the rail 6 is forced into position by wedges 10<1> and fixed by bolts 11. A bar 17 secured to the sheet is connected at its outer end by a cable to a winding drum or winch to effect, the flanging as shown in Fig. 5. Flanges of varying angle may be produced by altering the position of the bar 17 along the sheet. During the flanging operation, the projecting end 4 is heated and flanged by hand sledges. The sheet is then reversed and the other edge flanged and the end 4 completed as shown at 4<1>, Fig. 8.
