Abstract

Pipe fittings in the form of a split collar can only be used with a very limited range of pipe sizes. The present invention provides a split collar having a recess 12 at each end of each half 10. The recess receives a sealing member 20 in one of two dispositions. In one disposition the sealing member projects further than in the other. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pipe fitting This invention relates to pipe fittings and more particularly a split collar for fitting on a pipe.
A split collar is a well known pipe fitting which includes a tubular bore that is longitudinally split to enable it to be fitted around a pipe. In order that there should be no leakage between the collar and the pipe, sealing means are provided on the faces of the collar which mate with the pipe.
One of the problems about the known kinds of split collar is that a particular size of collar can only be used with a very limited range of pipe sizes. The present invention has been made with this difficulty in mind.
According to the invention there is provided a split collar including a tubular body longitudinally split into at least two parts, means for clamping said parts together around a pipe, at least one of the surfaces of said collar which, in use, mates with said pipe being provided with a recess, a deformable sealing member adapted to be located in said recess in one of at least two different dispositions, whereby in one disposition the undeformed sealing member projects further from the relating surface of the collar than in the other disposition.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through one half of a split collar; Fig. 2 is a section through a sealing member; Fig. 3 shows a part of the collar of Fig. 1 with the sealing member of Fig. 2 disposed for large pipes; and Fig. 4 shows a part of the collar of Fig. 1 with the sealing member of Fig. 2 disposed for smaller pipes.
Referring to the drawings a split collar comprises two parts which can be clamped together to form a tubular body around a pipe as is known per se. One half 10 of the collar is shown in Fig. 1. A recess 12 is provided adjacent each end of the half collar 10. The recess is of rectangular cross-section, with a U-shaped depression 14 formed in the base of the rectangle.
A resiliently deformable sealing member 16 is adapted to be received in the recess 12. As can be seen in Fig. 2 the sealing member has a crosssectional shape which corresponds to the shape of the recess in that it includes a rectangular portion 18 and a U-shaped projection 20. The sealing member also includes a smaller U-shaped projection 22 on the side thereof opposite projection 20.
The sealing member 16 can be fitted in the recess 12 in one of two ways. As shown in Fig. 3 the sealing member can be received in recess 12 so that projection 20 is located in the depression 14. In this disposition the projection 22 is exposed for sealing connection with a pipe 24 when the collar is clamped therearound.
For smaller sizes of pipe 24' the sealing member 16 is reversed so that projection 22 is located in the depression 14 and the larger projection exposed.
It will be understood that the invention is not restricted to the embodiment just described; other shapes of sealing member and recess can be adopted.
1. A split collar including a tubular body longitudinally split into at least two parts, means for clamping said parts together around a pipe, at least one of the surfaces of said collar which, in use, mates with said pipe being provided with a recess, deformable sealing member adapted to be located in said recess in one of at least two different dispositions whereby in one disposition the undeformed sealing member projects further from the mating surface of the collar than in the other disposition.
2. A split collar as claimed in Claim 1 , wherein the sealing member comprises a body having different size projections on either side thereof.
3. A split collar as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the body is of rectangular section.
4. A split collar as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein the recess in the collar is sized to receive the body and the larger of the two projections.
5. A split collar substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
